But at least you have taste... I wind up watching Hackers and Wing Commander over and over again mostly because I want mindless background noise...
Was I not supposed to admit that I owned those?
It can't sell reality in the first place. No one, least of all us loyal/. readers would want to go see accurate portrayals of coders.
Wargames, TRON, The Net, Hackers, Antitrust, and even Office Space are glamorizations of what is otherwise an extremely tedious process. You'd fall asleep in the middle of the movie if they tried to be accurate.:-) Sad thing is, the most accurate image of geeks in movies might have been the ones Broderick's character visited in Wargames, the wierdos who panicked when they realized he'd brought a girl...;-)
Seriously though, the best way to phase that whole thing would be "I'm not a coder, but I play a script-kiddie on TV".
Funny actually, I'm on T-Mobile now, and have been with them since they were VoiceStream and have never lost a message between myself and the friends I SMS on a consistent basis. Naturally then, I'm surprised to see T-Mobile considered the worst of the bunch.
Now getting our MEANINGS across to one another is quite a different manner... =)
I think that if a letter writing campaign hasn't succeded yet, then it likely never will. The original Star Trek was extended for a third season thanks to letter writing, but at least the fans of Farscape already have more than that. Just think though: One day you too might watch Farscape: The Motion Picture, which will be followed by nine more, and six other series based on the universe, until you truly wish that they'd left well enough alone...
That said, I'm going back to my cave to console myself with original Star Trek episodes... (Yes, they sucked. But I didn't like the one episode of Farscape I saw either... Somebody 'esplain the Farscape attraction to me please?)
Oh, that's right we're talking about a bureaucracy here, they're going to want more money anyways... What the hell? Does this not smack of big brother tactics? And, does this mean that they'll eventually be monitoring your speed too so that you automatically get mailed a ticket anytime you exceed the limit??? No good can come of this.
I live in Washington State, they'd better not try this here...
Books are a declining phenomenon? Quick, someone tell Barnes & Noble to start selling books on smart media!
Whassat? You DON'T have an e-book reader? what kind of troglodyte are you??? =)
As to spilling, I wish I could say all of my books are stain free, but for the most part, they've all got at least one coffee stain on them...
The flip side of that is, they're all still readable. Not that it matters, since I can always go to the nearest bookstore and get a new copy. Ain't capitalism grand? =)
Finally, if we ever do go to completely electronic forms of books, what would fundamentlists have to burn???
Seems to me, first you're gonna need to teach MS to share with the other children. Since they already like to hide API's, the likelyhood that they would think seriously about open sourcing anything they do is minimal. However, if they were smart, then anything that they want to bundle or give away SHOULD be under the GPL. (I.E. Media player or IE ) Seems like it would take the wind out of a lot of legal sails if anyone could alter those programs as they chose. Alas, this is not likely... Finally, let's not forget, they make their money from people BUYING their software, so it has to be wholly owned by MS. And it's tough to get capitalists to simply give up their primary source of income... =)

Well, this is all fine and dandy, but who's paying? And above all, what company will be desigigning all this and putting it into one neat compact and cute little package?
And internet connectivity? Will someone plese tell me what wireless or satellite I-net provider has managed to stay solvent long enough for truly "ubiquitous" connectivity to be a reality like they've depicted?
Alright, fine! I'll go back to lurking on Fark...

I've heard they're also wanting to sell Longhorn if M$ will let them... http://www.dellrumors.com/
In that case I'm a sadist, since I also encourage others to use windows...
Unless it's destroyed sooner to make way for a hyperspace bypass route... 'Scuse me while I find my towel.
The last time I tried to sit in one of those someone tried to stick things in the back of my skull...
Whaddya mean it'll feel "WEIRD"?
I'll fourth that. Lots of excellent movies mentioned here, but this one is my absolute favorite.
"I was ridin' along... Down by the Rio Grande... When I seen me a cowboy, cowboy, cowboy, ridin' towards me..."
Experts expect it to be exploited heavily...
And in other news, the sky is blue and the grass is green.
Film on my teeth at 11!

The management would like to apologize and offer a correction to the previou news cast: It seems we left out a few "really"s...

No, because he'd likely have to affect an english accent for us purists. And I can't imagine him sounding like anything other than some surfer dude...
