The most cynical bill titles end in "for the children", since who can vote for a bill about children? If it's for children it must be good.

Would you mind elaborating on what specifically was the revelation? I greatly enjoyed both these books, but never felt like that.

You obviously know nothing at all about repairing machinery. Mechanics still must have a good understanding of how the systems that they are repairing work. Otherwise they would have no hope of figuring out what the problem was.

Also, what yacht builders got wiped out? That's
news to me. I recall plenty of doom-and-gloom
predictions, but rich folk continued to indulge.

The rich avoided paying the luxury tax by buying
Italian-made yachts in Italy. This hurt U.S.
yacht manufacturers and cost U.S. jobs.

They can't stop you *that* easily. All you have
to do is run those services on non-standard ports.
Most clients can be easily configured to use them.
In the case of HTTP and FTP they can be included
directly into to URL. For example:
    http://foo.dsl.bar.com:3000
    ftp://foo.dsl.bar.com:3001
Other services can use non-standard ports, but
are harder for the user to configure. For HTTP
and FTP a URL could make this tranparent, without
ever having to know what a port was.

AMD already has knocked Intel down. Their products may be somewhat slower than Intel's, but that does not make them a failure. They have successfully pushed Intel to lowering prices and making newer and better products. Without this competition Intel would be charging more for slower CPU's. Whether AMD topples Intel or not is pointless, simply replacing one (possibly evil) empire with another one accomplishes nothing. By having a good competitive balance as we have now the consumers are the real winners. AMD needs to start making money, so this competitive process can continue, rather than destroy Intel.

Applications with Java? Sure. A desktop environment with Java? No. Java could be
used for commercial applications on Linux,
but a desktop would be a bad idea. This would
be controversial due to licensing like Qt is.
We wouldn't want to be totally dependant on
Sun for what could be eventually condsidered
a core component for a Linux system to function.
