  1. Kinda sad really on Palm to Buy Handspring · · Score: 1

I've been looking at buying a Visor for the last few months since I was diagnosed with Diabetes, there's a rather nifty use of the Springboard technology in the product sold by www.freestyletracker.com

Anyone that's super dependent on their tester / insulin but generally on the go might want to look at this, I cant see the technology being sustained after the merger so Ill probably be picking one up as soon as I can scrape the money together.

  2. Interesting on Mozilla 0.9.4 Released · · Score: 1

Im still using an 0.8.x build of Mozilla and for some reason Im failing to see all the instability that the newer releases are striving to thwart.

Maybe its just me? Im not a 'power user' perse... most of the sites I visit aren't multimedia intensive with the exception of some Flash which isnt readily supported anyway.

I guess if something happens in which my browser stops working Ill upgrade, but until then Im happy where I am =/

Kudos to the Mozilla team for all they're hard work and maybe someday Ill upgrade and check out all the new features ;)

  3. let the paranoia begin on Net Taps Without Warrants? · · Score: 1

I think its funny that everyone automatically assumes that the government gives a shit about what you do on your computer. If the government wants to read my email, sniff my packets, or what have you then so be it. Doesn't bother me in the least because I really dont have anything to hide. The government has always taken certain neccessary measures in times of national crisis and this is another example of that, everyone just needs to quit being paranoid and let the government do what it will because the more strongly you bitch about it, the more determined they're gonna be. Who knows, this might save your house from being destroyed in a future attack because they intercepted an email from l33tTerrorist@hotmail.com outlining an attack. What are you gonna cry about more? Your "privacy" being slightly invaded or being homeless?

  4. Portable Keyboards on Ergonomic Laptop Keyboards? · · Score: 2
I've used several laptop's over the years, whether working on a customers or shopping for my own this past 6 months. What laptop did I buy? an Apple iBook.

This is definitely the most comfortable laptop that Ive ever had the pleasure of typing on. While there are a few _layout_ changes that I would make just for the sake of convenience, I can sit and pound away for hours at a unix shell or a term paper and be none worse for the wear.

I believe this is a result of the relatively soft plastic that was used in the construction of the keys, you dont feel like you're pounding a brick when you make a keystroke. Also another point of interest is the rounded front edge of the machine. While this _may_ have been designed for more form over function, it achieves a dual purpose. It's quite comfortable to just lay your wrists on the computer, and this alleviates many of the cramps etc. that Ive had from other laptops.

Most have a solid 90 degree corner there for your computing pleasure forcing most to either suspend your wrists in an uncomfortable manner or risk cutting off circulation to your hands.

If any of you happen to know someone that owns an iBook, or maybe you live in a city where they have a retail store that carries them, try it out. While some of the keys may take a little getting used to (like hitting F12 instead of Delete accidentally), overall it has a really solid and comfortable feel.

    Cheers,

  5. OSX vs. OS9 on Apple Releases - Doing Less, Faster, Is Better? · · Score: 2
I use both OSX and OS9.1 on my two Mac's, I have a G4 500 in my office with 192MB RAM and I have a Graphite iBook DVSE that goes everywhere with me which has 320MB RAM in it.

The G4 stays in X all the time since I mainly use it only for "work" (which entails several shell prompts and a tn3270 emu) and it does the job fine, it doesn't run slow and it doesn't crash. The iBook on the other hand is a different situation, I hardly ever boot out of OS9.1 for several reasons.

    1) There's a marked difference between G3 and G4 proc performance, even though there's only a 34Mhz difference between the 2 machines. OSX runs hideously slow even when doing simple GUI tasks, and the updates have done little to nothing for this.
    2) CD Burning. Give me a break... Apple touted that CD auth support would be coming "soon" after the initial release and that was one of the reasons I was willing to plunk down the money for the OS and stick it out from the get go, but iTunes for burning just doesn't cut it for me. It's a great MP3 (I can still say mp3 without being sued right?) and CD player, but I (and many others I know) really prefer Toast.
    3) DVD's : 'nuff said.
    4) Battery consumption isn't "slightly decreased" as per Apple's claim, in fact I find it to be "basically cut in half" but that just may be me.

Anyway, OSX is an awesome step forward for Apple, but there are many bugs to be worked out and features to be added before it's ready for the general public (which this has already been said, but I thought I'd put in my 2 cents)

On a side note, I've been keeping tabs on the MacAddict forums for some time now, and I keep seeing all these posts on "Where do I go to learn Unix" and "How do I do this in the Terminal". While these people really aren't supporting the Linux movement, they are reaching out for knowledge that's deeper than the content's of a Start or Apple menu, and I think that can only be a good thing for the future.

    Cheers,

I think it's a sad day indeed when we actually have basis to give awards for invasion of privacy and the basic disregard of a few personal rights. For all the talk about the 21st century being the start of a new era and how enlightened we think we are, we still can't impliment an unobtrusive yet effective form of government.

I think government needs to get with the times and adobt policies that fit accordingly. The RIAA has assumed an almost Gestapo-like role lately, and the last time there was a Gestapo we went to war... makes me wander what could be looming around the corner for us now.

  12. Attitude Towards BeOS on Ask NVIDIA Interview · · Score: 1

Personally, i'm rather offended in the way which NVIDIA handled the one and only question regarding support for the Be platform. Being a BeOS user myself, I can attest to the frustration of those users who are missing out on the highend capabilities of a GeForce2 just because of their choice of OS... it's not so terribly bad in itself, after all there ARE other vid cards to be had that do support Be (my Diamond Monster Fusion still works great) but its the inherent attitude that I sensed in the article. Starting with heading it up under "Miscellaneous"? Im sorry, but thats just disrespectful.. especially when you look at some of the other categories that were given their own headers. Another note: i dont really appreciate the attitude put forth by the question itself and I believe that this may have had a great deal to do with NVIDIA's blunt "NO" response... If the question had been asked with a little more tact and a little less newbie, we might have gotten some useful information as to WHY they were saying NO, but know who can guess? There's my little rant, feel free to reply, flamers dont waste my time. Thnx Syn

  13. Policy Moderation? on Adapting Existing Federal Web Sites For The Disabled? · · Score: 1

Personally, I can see the need for some kind of "grandfather clause" in situations like this; forcing the update of only those resources deemed of significant importance. I believe that at the heart of this policy there are good intentions, and even the government trying to appease whatever lobby incurred this action, but I believe it is rather unjust to force compliance at the expense of other more important endeavours. One of these research labs being forced to comply could be days away from a cure for something like cancer, or idiocy, but they have to put it off to update a website? I know this may be an extreme example, but just consider it when applied to 'Undue Burden'... who decides what is due and what is not? (note: this is dew) Synclayre
