I dunno. The article seems to indicate that the robot would FIND the leak but NOT REPAIR the leak!

So, they might send down more divers or the article mentioned something about draining it to fix it.

My question is if they are building a new tunnel to bring water to NY, why not turn on that tunnel, shut down the questionable one and spend a year or two fixing the old one and be done with it? Otherwise, why build the second one in the first place, or at least put it to work once it is built.

Hell, I am tired of arguing over what language to use to do simple applications, and most applications are pretty simple. Don't believe me? Then consider the poliferation of applications that are written in VB.

I take the "if it feels good do it" approach to programming. If you like the language and feel productive with it, then, hell, use it.

I like writting apps that do things, not learning new languages or arguing what language it better.

There a tons and tons and tons of popular Open Source applications that need work. I don't think that anyone needs to reinvent the wheel or discover the next "killer app". Just a little poking around should yield many possibilities.

If I was to start looking I would find "old" KDE apps and port them to KDE2. I am tired of my old apps not working with KDE2.

My $0.02 for whatever it is worth.

  7. Just an observation. on Linux *Won't* Fail on the Desktop? · · Score: 3, Interesting

I believe that Linux does have a promising future as a common desktop operating system. The problem is that everyone uses MS products as a benchmark for usability and functionality. Is linux difficult to use? When comparing it to the defacto standard that MS has established over the years, indeed Linux is confusing and difficult to use.

As an experiment I recently gave my mother, who has _never_ used a computer, a new Dell system with Redhat 7.2 installed. I taught her how to use it and gave her a few books to help her along the way. Results, she is now a productive and happy user of Linux.

See, to her MS or Linux makes no difference. She would have to learn either but since she didnt have years of bias towards MS products both OS are completely interchangeable to her. She can surf the Internet, use word processing, and play music, and the price was right!

Linux has come a long way and is getting better everyday. Maybe LUGs should proactively promote and manage Linux machines in schools with kids who don't have the bias yet, and establish Linux as the defacto standard.

    Just a thought.
