WTF? Best Gamecube game is Warrior Within? Considering some of the excellent Nintendo first and second party titles released last year and they choose a mediocre multi-platform game?

  6. Re:A bit US-Centric, and possibly racist too? on GTA San Andreas Official Site Launched · · Score: 5, Insightful

I can't be the only European who thinks the GTA series of games is rather US-centric?

This is one of the great things about the GTA series. Americans think it's clearly a home-made product, the rest of the world is sometimes put off by its Americocentric theme, but what neither realise is that GTA is a thoroughly European product. Yes, various Americans work on the game via Rockstar's head office in New York, but the game itself is made by Rockstar North (ex-DMA Design) in Scotland.

This is actually readily apparent if you pay attention. GTA as it is perhaps could not even have been made by only Americans; it is the result of how Europeans experienced American crime through US film, TV and music. The entire plot of the games is one crime cliche after another, where you can often pinpoint the film whence it came from, but what makes it work is that is not considered "real". There is no real crime in GTA. It's just a movie. Similarly for the stereotypes, these don't mean as much to Europeans as they would to Americans. As a result, in the US you can expect a lot of ruckus over both the stereotyping and the violence in this game, whereas most complaints in Europe will be only about the violence. The stereotypes are the same we've seen a hundred times before in US films.

That's why Europeans and others more accustomed to small change keep them in their wallets, which can accommodate them just fine. 1 and 2 coins are far more practical and economical than fragile paper money. The US Mint would love to change over to coins, but the US public is fairly conservative when it comes to the greens...

That is a fairly common comment when first seeing the Beluga.

They (there's five of them) are used to ferry fuselages across Europe, but obviously the fuselage of a A380 is way too big for it. I wonder if they'll ever build a "Super Beluga" on the basis of an A380...

  10. BBC's tribute was great! on Monty Python Turns 30 · · Score: 1

In closing to this thread, I can say that I absolutely loved the BBC's 30 Years of MP tribute!

It contained the first new Python material in years, with the entire cast, except as Cleese said, "the dead one".

It also included an documentary on MPFC by Eddie Izzard, a tour of MPFC shooting locations by Michael Palin, a viewing of their classic film "Life of Brian", a compilation of their best known songs presented by Meatloaf, and finally an exhaustive ;-) interview by Peter Sissons.

All I can say, is that I hope this will be aired in the USA someday, you'll especially like the "South Park Tribute To Monty Python". Imagine the parrot sketch with Kenny as the dead parrot ;-)

  13. Early SW:TPM Viewing @ Veronica.nl on Star Wars Ahead of Schedule · · Score: 1

Well, if I understand it correctly, Dutch tv/radio broadcaster Veronica will broadcast an uncut 5.5 hours long version of TPM on their website (www.veronica.nl) using RealVideo.

They claim they requested a trailer-tape, but were very surprised to find a full, uncut version. Now, for some reason, they decided to air it, even though they acknowledge they're not about the legality of it all.

A PR stunt? A hoax? I guess we'll have to see. According to their website they'll probably air it next wednesday night.

And then it hits you.... Next wednesday night is the night between March 31 and ......

    April Fools Day!
