I have to say the PICAXE controller are also a great introduction... I paid $AU15 for a basic chip and it only takes 2x resisters to interface to your serial port.. dkownload the programming env (free) and your away.,, they are quite simple chips but have in built PWM, IC2, (dallas) 1W interface and ps2 keyboard support all built in... they are just TOO EASY!!! get an 'X' veriosn though... you will find the extra memory very usful.....
I have to agree.. Iv been using Linux ont the desktop for a few years now (Im a unix admin) and browser plugin support has to be the single most common (albeit most trivial) limititaion I regularly find..
I have also tried to convice others of the pros of Linux but web browsing is a big part of their requirements...
Ximain and Open/Star Office have come a long way to empowering Linux on the desktop.. but bloody browser plugins and even java support still seem a bit flakey under mozilla..
btw.. when I use windows I get pretty much the same problem since the issue is with my browser of choice... Mozilla firebird.. not really the os..
Videolan is definitly a very cool project!
I just found the gui abit buggy and recommed using the cli if possible.. seems pretty solid then.

Saw Michael Moore's "Bowling for Columbine" last night... I think this documentary covered the issue pretty well... be afraid, very fraid...
