I read this in the article and I wonder what he really means by innovation failing fast?
"Bill isn't afraid of taking long-term chances. He also understands that you have to try everything, because the real secret to innovation is failing fast."
How about a overly paitiotic story about flying a jet fighter being flown into the big glowing heart of redmond and the whole place blowing up.....
What you seem to forget is Windows is a system. That system is our enemy
When you are inside and you look around what do you see? You see buisnessmen, teachers, carpenters, lawyers
The very minds of the people we are trying to save But until we do these people are a part of that system And that makes them our enemy
You have to understand most of these people are not ready to uninstall windows And many of them are so hopelessly dependant on windows that they will fight to defend it
Were you listening to me or were you looking at the operating system from Redmond Look Again!
You turn around and where the screenshot of XP was; it is now a gun pointed point blank into your face
I wasn't aiming specifically at Redhat users. I just used Redhat as an example. The thing is most Redhat users are not quite as good as you. In Slack it is hard to find people who rely on GUI tools.
BTW slack can use sysvinit scripts they just need to be written.
When was the last time you changed a setting and your distro changed it back. Never saw that behavior with Red Hat. Is there a case of this happening with other distros, or are you making things up?
I actually saw slackware do it to someone the other day. He changed MOTD and the system changed it back after a reboot. Because MOTD is built by a script in/etc/rc.d After the Script was altered it worked but he was confused nonetheless
Slackware is also very stable thats why it doesn't use GCC 3.1 out of the box. That would probably also mean that Slackware is useless for C++ development. GCC 2.95 is just not very standards compliant for C++ development. But it is a very stable C compiler.
Is there something about GCC 2.95 we should know. I assume you are talking about maybe a STL problem.
Really the best thing about Slackware is that it is like C. Not like assembly so that you have to do everything. But not like higher level languages where everthing is done with magic tricks. When was the last time you changed a setting and your distro changed it back. That sort of behaviour is unlikely on Slackware.
The user has full control. There is no crappy config tools to get in the way. This is why it is so good for learning Unix and Linux because you have access to the raw system.
In slackware if I want to change the bitdepth of X windows I have to edit it with a text file. At first this might seem silly but when a Redhat user is trying to do something complicated his fancy tools hold him back. Slack users do not have that problem, they understand how the system works.
Slackware is also very stable thats why it doesn't use GCC 3.1 out of the box.
Censorship in Australia is like the wearing of seatbelts in America. It is not mandatory. By law we are meant to use filtering software. But there is no enforcement of that law.
So basically the mythical blacklist exists but can do nothing to us. No one ever checks that the filtering software is on.
Normally ISPs are meant to use filtering software but consumers can opt out of it if they use their own filters. There are no real approved filters, none that I know of. The only filter I use is my mind. Mainly to watch out for the link traps on./
The reason this is happening is the government is too gutless to legislate real laws. Instead it trys to appease the conservatives with laws that sound good on paper but don't work in reality. In particular this man is responsible
Sen Harradine is one of those people who hold power in the senate. Because he is not with either of the major factions they need to bribe him with his legislation to get their legislation passed. Basically he is not a problem because the major political parties Labour and Liberal dance around his silly issues.
Here is some of Harradine's first speech.
I was committed to uplifting the poor, to championing the cause of the underprivileged - not only in this country but also in the developing countries to our near north - and to representing the aspirations of the workers.
And
Why was all that pressure exercised? Because almost 10 years ago I declared that the friends of the communists were attempting to silence me. The friends of the communists have never silenced me and I do not intend to be silenced by them in this chamber.
I don't live in his electorate.

Normally make uninstall.
But if you use checkinstall you can remove the package cleany and fully.
Linux is an operating system. Just because it has no user interface does not make it not an operating system. It still controls how programs interact with the hardware.
No people this is about programming the vertex and pixel shaders in assembly not the CPU. Because the shaders are new there is no OpenGL, DirectX way of programming them. So people wrote assembly code for them. Assembly for the pixel shader. Now Nvidia has created a programming language for programming shaders.
This has nothing to do with writing x86 assembly to make a game go faster.
I live in Toowoomba QLD and the Mesh is here. Another issue to be considered is Mirrors. The more people who set up mirrors on the mesh of important download sites, the less connection to the Internet will be required.
I think that some people will allow trickle connections between the Mesh and the Net, If there is enough trickle connections then we won't need broadband. Then perhaps Telstra will take notice (And probably petition the gov to ban free wireless but anyway:)
"Oh my god, how do I use pointers! How to define a structure?! HOLY SHIT, IF THIS 5-LINE FUNCTION SEGFAULTS ONE MORE TIME I'M GOING TO MURDER THE ENTIRE PLANET!!"
LOL
C is easy if you have learned assembler first. When you know at least 5 languages things really start to fall into place. You can understand not just why languages do different things but also how you could implement it in different languages. Of course thats a bit hard for an introductory course. First structure then logic then analysis is what I say. It's hard to work out a solution if you have no idea how the logic works. It's like asking someone to write it down in English if they don't know English.
"I'm surprised that someone modded it insightful."
It's insightful because by turning the statement around you made it easier to see what is going on. Yes you were joking but it was an enlightening joke.
I am really sick and tired of being told that I cannot be ethical, moral, or even just a nice guy without accepting the baggage of some crazy cult like Christianity. I happily accept the concept of being kind to my fellow man without needing the imaginary carrot and stick of heaven and hell.
Therefore you are intolerant of other religions and basically dismiss your arguments that religion causes intolerance because in your case it is lack of religion. Intolerance is human based not religion based.
Why is it that on every one of these science posts people bash Christianity? I know why because they are judging American Christianity not real Christianity, it is typical of Americans to never think outside the box.
So to conclude: this Slackware user wants a packaging system for day-to-day use. I compile+tweak once and push the new package to all the production servers.
Your a sysadmin not a user here
I never actually read the comment your all commenting on so I can't comment
For example, with many of MS's rather bland tools, they include C/C++ headers to access varous API's and whatnot.
The headers themselves are copyrighted. You cannot mix copyrights like that it's not legal. Ask any programmer. This is just Microsoft FUD. The issue of copyright is very clear in programming.
However, you dont have all the source, since the ADO headers from MS link to compiled binary code.
This is the main problem not understanding how programming works. The headers by themselves are useless, you actually need the code they reference. Otherwise you have produced nothing. Your thinking of linking against a library. That is allowed as it does not combine the source code. How can it be ambiguous if you never had the source in the first place?
like you develop some GPL software, put it out there, and a competitor takes it, forks, and keeps it closed. The question is what can you sue for? You havent suffered any damages (you were giving it away to start with!), and it is hard to prove anything actually even happened.
You haven't lost anything. They cannot take your ownership of the original code away from you. You always own that especially under the GPL. Forking implies that they have added their own work to the code. Not that they can suddenly own the entire codebase. Liscence forking isn't possible unless the liscence allows it and the GPL does not.
You haven't show the unclarity of the legalities you have just shown your own misunderstanding. This is the same thing Microsoft is trying to do. Try to make people who have no clue fear what they have no need to fear.
Of course it doesn't help that there is no recognized equivalent to the MCSE program - how do you then justify who you hire? Slashdot karma? I know there is the Red Hat program, but does that really carry much weight in government hiring?
Probably the same way they got their current crop of Computing people, from a University.
until users can install programs with minimal effort and set up things like simple files sharing with a windows box while only using the GUI. (Not an all inclusive list, but a start.)
You shouldn't say things like that until you have tried Linux distros like Lycoris. After you have used them you will realise your statement is not true!
No wonder we never understand politicians.
RIAA can suck my CD's

Thats because there is already a free Australian wireless network. The Mesh.

Where do I download clues?
Do you understand what is hacking? You think that several tricks with several commands then you can hack a system! How juvenile!
Charms Guide to hacking in three easy steps
Step 1
Obtain one root kit and one portscanner
Then install on PC
Step 2
Run portscanner against a block of IP addresses
If a port is open and the system running software for your rootkit commence Step 3
Step 3
Start the rootkit and aim it at the IP you gained above
You should now have access to that machine
Congratulations you know now how to hack
Note this is the Script Kiddie way
Other people are brighter and do something more creative than hacking.
