In digital, you can create perfect copies and send them out to everyone you know... at the click of a button.
With analog, you actually have to work at it. You'd have to tape the tape (lossy), make copies (lossy), and give it to friends/fellow pirates manually.
Computers make things much easier for pirates. That's why there's so much focus on swapping music digitally. It's much more of a danger to the Music Industry, and they have a right to protect themselves.
I have quite a bit of experience in the linux community. I remember way back when, installing Redhat 5.0 and struggling to get it to work, and work at all decently. I remember when Gnome 1.0 came out, leaving coredumps all over your desktop (I'm just glad it got better). I remember when Mozilla went open-source, and when the Gimp decided to break the standards and create it's own toolkit. I used to read FreshMeat and marvel at all the new, cool projects that would come out.
However, I see very little projects from the FreeBSD community. Of course there's the occasional release of version 3.2 or whatever, but that's about it. No cool software for it.
So, my question is this: why the lack of enthusiasm? Hubbard resigning is just the latest sympton I've noticed. Is it because of the controlled development model? Is it because of the poor quality of development tools? Is it because there's no companies involved?
It seems to me that without a little more enthusiasm, FreeBSD won't go anywhere. If you want to give Linux a run for it's money, you can't just sit on your butt.
Very cool stuff. They still claim copyright -- they haven't GPLed it or anything -- but as far as I can tell it's free for noncommercial fan projects and such.
All source code herein is the property of Volition, Inc. You may not sell or otherwise commercially exploit the source or things you created based on the source.
Can't wait to mess around with this beast (four megs worth of code).
Indeed, but for a while there it looked like they were finally going to admit that it's a dead end. I'm just depressed that it looks like x86 is here to stay for years more.
Another hacked on extention to the same old architecture that we've been using since the 4004 and 8080 (no, seriously). The basic 8-bit core, the bizarrely segmented registers, the warped-ass extentions, and the CISC instruction set... it all makes me sick. Not to mention that we're still using a fucking BIOS.
Have you ever used something with OpenBoot? It's incredibly nice.
But no, we're still using a system that's basically an overglorified 386DX.
Despite the speed hit, the IA64 architecture was a step in the right direction. A big step. In this case, AMD is going to be setting the industry back.
Yeah, sure, it's a social event. Just like listening to 45's.
With one small difference -- the 45's were bought legally.
Now when you're making your mix CD, do you own that music you're burning onto there? Or was it a bunch of mp3's that you've downloaded from the Internet?
Yeah, that's what I thought.
I would hope that it's becoming more clear to people that this is fully illegal. "Fair Use" is a pretty broad concept, but it doesn't allow for blatently stealing music for your own use. It's shameful that parents don't better inform their children about theft.
I'm amazed that this kind of uninformed naivety about the music industry still exists. If people keep stealing their music, artists won't have any means or motivation to make more music.
If you consider yourself a 'grown-up', you should've left Slashdot for someplace with, you know, actually journalism and whatnot a long time ago.
True. Journalism around here is nonexistant. Maybe I should leave for somewhere with higher standards. Maybe even for a community that has editors who are actually involved with their own site.
Yes, but as one of the only people around here who actually has a social life I feel it is my duty to shed a little light. Plus Anime is a pet peeve. I find that it's highly liberating to rant about it.
Anime puts you into an undesirable mindset. Ask any chick if they would rather go out with:
A) Someone who sits around and obsesses about a Japanese kid show B) Someone who actually has a life/knows how to carry on a conversation
You should intuitively know the answer. If you can't figure it out, then there's very little hope for you.
I'm just trying to help the g**ks around here. Maybe if more get laid we won't have any more Columbines.
I think I speak for the silent majority when I say
Who fucking cares?
Honestly, I thought that this site was populated by technology professionals. As in grown-ups. I know that all college kids go through phases, and I guess that Anime could be a common one (I wouldn't know, I finished my masters some time ago). But honestly, I would think it would be tossed out with the likes of SouthPark and other tired cartoons by now.
Is it too much to ask for everyone to grow up? Surely there's something interesting somewhere... some new asteral phenomena? Some new technique of computing? Maybe big bad MS is up to their old tricks? Or Apple? Or Oracle? Or maybe a government conspiracy theory? Spyware? Censorware? Something? Anything?
You know, news for nerds? Stuff that matters?
Then again, this is the same crowd that considers Linux a viable Desktop OS. Perhaps I've outgrown Slashdot.

I'm just glad the fucking "marbles" rating scheme is gone. How incredibly lame. Ooooooooh! I've got SEVEN marbles!
;)
Not to mention the petty little ratings wars that it spawned.
Nothing like slashdot, of course
Maybe nVidia has enough money to put out some decent drivers now.
Then again last I heard hell was still a balmy 1668 degrees Celcius.

Also, IA64 does x86 compatibility. Just rather awkwardly.
Dear God! How fucking lame!

And that would be a sad thing indeed.
I miss OGG_THE_CAVEMAN too.
But is he really worth devoting an entire story to?
...didn't they wait for 1.0?
It's not like it's that far off.
ActiveX can be used in Mozilla.
You have to remember something about this:
There's a huge difference between 25 cents here and 25 cents in India. The average income is much lower.
For instance, 25 cents in India could equate to around $4.00 there.
Now do you really want to pay four bucks a track? $40.00+ per CD?
I didn't think so.
It's their code, they can licence it however they damn well please.
That's what "freedom" is all about. You get to choose how your code can be used. MS has decided, now it's up to us to honor that decision.
Otherwise, you have no right to expect anyone to respect licences like the GPL.
But there are plenty of shows that are not.
Absolutely right. Some Anime is sickening pornography featuring characters that aren't even out of school.
I wuv you! I wuv you! I wuv you!
Who wuvs you?
Who?
Who?
That's right! Burgundy wuvs you! Awww... You're so cute.
*hugs*
Does anyone know if they've included any extra security packages?
Seeing how WEP is basically an open door, I see no reason not to have ipchains installed and operational by default.
The software is there. Anyone know if they are using it? If not, it seems a bit a complete open door to these guys...

I hear Adequacy is nice this time of year.
Ever heard of an opinion?
Of course. That's exactly why I posted mine.
*hugs*

...ya wanna turn on anonymous posting again?
I assume not logged in users can still post
As far as I can tell no.
Anonymous posting is turned off. Dunno why, but I think it might have to do with the Great TrollTalk Crapflood of 2002.
Damn spammers.
And I was so looking forward to owning pre-ban computers!
Repent! Repent, for the End is Nigh!!!
