    My recommendation: Attend the HOA meetings and/or join the HOA committee (usually made up of homeowners). You'll be able to have your say, and if you actually get voted into the HOA committee (remember, you're not the only one in your neighborhood who thinks they're crazy), you'll be able to curb their free speech zones and torture regiment (I mean lawn nazism and the like).

    Anyone notice that when people start picking on others for no apparent reason, it deteriorates their own credibility? It's something politicians and spin doctors haven't all grasped. I'm looking for people who critique others constructively, and who don't take time out of their day to bash others.

    Kerry's failed joke last month was a prime example. If he weren't trying to be mean in such a juvenile fashion, he might not have put his foot in his mouth so far. If he'd just critiqued Bush without attempting poor wit, which is something I can see Kerry doing and actually making low-rent fun is something he seems odd attempting, he would be fine.

    Often in the court system, these legal loopholes (be they ill-defined laws or what have you) allow criminals to go free. The judge took common sense and applied it, something judges are allowed to do, as lawyers try to circumvent the law by defeating it with specifics. Kudos to intelligent decision-making, and it's time to rewrite the law from "e-mail" to "electronic correspondence".

    I suppose passing of information is the biggest determination of whether we'll need archaeologists. If things go as planned, we should have a lot more information available about the 20th century in 2000 years than we have about the 1st century now, making archaeology somewhat unnecessary.

    Assuming the Turkey's plans for revenge on the human species don't come to fruition too soon.

    The original (I think) driving/shooting game for the Playstation called Twisted Metal. Jumping gaps between buildings only to have your opponent's missile hit you in mid-air, sending you plummeting into the streets below. It was an open-map (no track) driving game where different cars had different weapons, most pretty fun to use. Just crazy good fun, laughing with my brother.

    Driver (thinking of car games), though mostly single-player, my Dad and I would swap on missions, then watch the "movie-style" playbacks of our chases. Coolness.

    The space elevator will move too slowly to keep living things from being irradiated by the Van Allen belt surrounding the Earth. The solution is to create a passenger compartment inside a cargo container filled with water, which is a terrific absorber of energy, which in turn can house the sharks.

    So say everything can be cloned. What do you barter for? It would have to be services, experience, wisdom. How do you reward these things then? It's hard to imagine a world without trade of physical items (money, good, etc). The "price" for doing things would be just cost of labor, as parts are free. But then you need to put a value on services, education, knowledge.

    "I'll fix your roof if you fix install my dishwasher."
    "I'll do research on fuel cell membranes if you build the rest of the car..."

    Head...hurts...

    Given the 1+ million strong army north of the border, and the questionable sanity of the leader controlling it, that border must be defended. The numerical superiority means some defenses must be automated, leaving land mines as the only existing technology.

    Mexico's neighbor to the north doesn't have a million people in their army for one, and while the border needs to be defended, who needs land mines when they're building a fence for us? Viva la Mexico!

    The movie Starship Troopers was terrible, and that's not an opinion. Plot, acting, action, the way it distorted the plot, action, and characters in what is a great book....

    I enjoyed Heinlein's Glory Road. An adventurous romp with Heinlein's usual (or unusual) take on Earthly cultures. Just good science-fiction writing (which doesn't mean it's great literature, it's just not the usual schlock).

    Isn't that a bit like supermarkets saying we're going to sell more organic food? Not necessarily going to decrease the sale of regular food, but we're not going to decrease the amount of organic food.

    I'm happy there are more linux servers. And once it becomes a viable desktop solution for a normal user, it'll be a boon for its security. As it is now, it's not a flexible, easy to manage, easy to use desktop OS. But keep trying!

    Was a voting system where you're never sure if your vote is what you think it is ever going to work? Even with a paper trail, there's no saying what I put into the computer is correlated with what came out on that piece of paper, yet it's the computer entry that will be counted.

    Even scanned paper ballots, sure it's faster, but the scanner can be tampered with as well.

    The only way you can dismiss the above is if you're a complete voter skeptic and believe our votes don't matter anyway. Hand-counted paper ballots - it's the only way to be sure.

    he people smart enough to consider this question are probably more intelligent than 85% of those who actually will vote. Therefore, not voting because you don't think you are informed enough results in fewer votes by smart people. It puts more power in the hands of the stupid.

    Modded "insightful" for calling people stupid? Thoughtful does not equal smart. Decisive does not equal stupid. There are lots of people who step right up and, without knowing the issues or the candidates, vote on their party line. I'll be the first to say that it would be better if this weren't the case, but I wouldn't call those people stupid. Sheep, perhaps.

    Or maybe just people who let others do the thinking for them. That might be 85% of the populace.

    As opposed to someone who actually reads up on the topics and gives a knowledgeable vote. Oh, by the way, your glass is half full...would you like a refill?

    I'm for voting halls. A bunch of large locales per town where anyone who wants to vote can come meet at a specific time. A person stands on a podium, reads off the candidate/issue, then says, "Yes!" and waits for applause. He then says "No!" and waits for applause. The candidate/issue with the loudest applause meter reading (there'll be someone off to the side holding the big thermometer-looking thing) gets the win.

    Simple yet nostalgic, and you have someone to hang if the crowd is obviously louder than what the thermometer is showing.

    Anyone who's had dealing with the court system here in the U.S. would know that you want no part of it.

    You: Hi, I'm here to file my small claims court grievance towards this political party.

    Claims Court Window: Hmm, you need to take this form across the street, 3rd floor, room 314.

    You: Oh. But you're the Small Claims Court window...what's in 314?

    CCW: That's the filing window. Once your claim is filed, then any future dealings with the court will begin here.

    You: Ah. Makes sense. Thanks. ...

    You (at window 314): Hi, I'm here to file for Small Claims Court.

    314: Small claims? How'd you get here? This is the window for filing for divorce court.

    You: But the woman in the Small Claim Courts window said 314 was where I file.

    314: Lemme see that. No...go talk to her again. She should be able to help you. Next!

    And around and around it goes. If you ever do file, expect to wait 6 months, then be asked to come in at 8 in the morning so you can sit outside the courtroom until your case is called at 11 so the judge can set a date for your next hearing in 2 months. That's it.

    But hey...it might be worth the money!

    I don't want to downplay this too much, even my place of work has a new phone tree in case we need to call people to tell them everyone's dead...

    But haven't more people died from spinach, indeed, from pretty much anything else that's deadly, than bird flu? I'm not saying it won't be eventually become more prevalent, but I think the likelihood of getting hit by a jet airliner's frozen poop is proba.....

    And what, pray tell, do you think the policeman's brain is executing when he is deciding whether or not to accost you?

    1) A mugging or a hugging can be over in seconds. Can the camera tell which was which before it phones the police?
    2) There'll be more cameras than patrolling cop cars. A patrolling cop car can ignore or react to an incident depending on how it unfolds. A camera that tells a cop to respond to a particular location means the cop HAS to respond.

    Not the worst idea ever, but it might be the biggest waste of time for our boys in blue.
