Consoles don't sell games. Games sell consoles. It's the same way with operating systems. MS doesn't make that much money off of their OS. Remember when the courts decided people could ask for a refund on windows if it was included out of the factory. How much was that? 50 cents? They make their money off Word, Excel, etc. They don't care if you steal the OS. It just means you might buy their software.
I agree with you. If cloning ever became popular people wouldn't think much about it. But the first clones would be followed around by the media and treated like freaks.
I just think that we could do it, but there isn't any real compelling reason to do it.
There's no way they're going to catch up. I'm not even going to bother with them anymore. When AMD gets their 64-bit chips out I'll upgrade. No sense buying an expensive 32-bit chip now when you can wait on a 2 GHz monster. As long as it has backwards compatability, I'm game.
Just curious. The new opcodes on these processors, are they going to be even remotely similar to each other. If they aren't I'd hate to see the x86 market split between two incompatable chipsets.
Exactly. All of the excuses for human cloning are contrived.
Growing organs - There's a lot of research in that area. We don't have to grow a whole human and hack them apart.
Genetic studies - Yeah, using real human clones would be more accurate. But there's a reason we use mice. They grow quick, and genetic changes can be researched a lot faster. When I think of the people suggesting we should give birth to a whole individual for such an obviously inane reason, it makes me want to puke.
Infertile couples - Yeah. I bet there a lot of people out there who want their kid to be an exact clone of them. Not. I think the ones who would are just weird ego trips.
They're just a bunch of trigger happy freaks playing with other peoples lives. How would you feel growing up knowing that you were only birthed to satisfy someones curiosity? Sort of takes you away from that "conceived in love idea."
How bout this? We'll lure people in with value added services. Instead of just charging them for access to content online, we'll give them the option of having hardcopies. We'll put some of our articles online. Then we'll sell a fuller version on little glossy sheets of paper bound together. OOOH, We can call it a magazine. I think that's french or something.
Deleted scenes are one thing that I look for. The sixth sense dvd had some good ones, and the ones on the Road Trip dvd just had me rolling on the floor laughing. They never should have taken them out. It really depends on the movie. Another thing is that if your paying 20-25 dollars for a movie you want as much as you can get. If I ever get the money, I'm going to buy a multistandard television so I can buy Australian dvds. They have more features, but they're usually the same price.
As a side note on Dune. I started to read the book once and I got bored within the first few pages. If a movie is going to be that long, it has to offer something really good to me.
Moderation is good in drinking and on web sites. We can't all be able to agree on what is offensive and what isn't. But as long as the material isn't removed, I don't see any reason why the community shouldn't be able to give feedback. That's what makes slashdot great. Members can choose to censor what they take in or they can choose not to. The moderation system may be a little fuzzy, but it does serve as a general guide.
I'm not trolling. I just don't get why everyone online comes down on the phantom menace like it was just regurgitation. Everyone I know of liked it. I've loved Star Wars for years. I could understand people attacking the movie if there was something major wrong with it. I get the feeling that most of these people hate it because it doesn't have the same cheesy effects as the other three.
If you want to get away from the monoculture come south. The south has cajuns, creoles, some indians, and a lot of blacks. If you look at a map of ethnic distribution you'll find that most minorities live here. (The North didn't exactly encourage them to move in with them after the war.) And our food is way better than theirs. That is if your not fond of dieting.
I'm getting really tired of hearing people talking about how Episode One was so bad. Personally I loved it, and I'm not an 8 year old. Tell me what was bad about it. The only serious complaint I've heard so far is that it didn't make sense to have R2D2 and C3PO in the movie. Get over it. I've never watched a single movie that was completely consistent in its plot. Star Wars was never really consistent to begin with. You may not like it but personally I'm going to buy all of the movies when they come out. That is provided they all are of the same quality.
What were you expecting? I got what I was expecting.
Reps do get bits and bytes. They know that any 133t 1d10t can send an e-mail rant in 5 seconds. They don't care about that stuff. Send them a nice clearly written letter explaining your gripe. I wouldn't pay attention to that much e-mail either
This reminds me of an idea I thought up. Create a compiler by reverse engineering one of JonKatz' articles. Have it output the decss code. Then make a few small hello world proggies to prove that it's a real compiler. Either Katz is declared a circumvention mechanism or decss is declared legal. Either way it's a win-win situation.
You know I used to not download lots of mp3's because I saw some sense in the argument that the artist's should be compensated. Now I'm just going to go into a downloading frenzy. If they don't respect the artists why should I. If I do respect the artists the money will go to the RIAA anyways.
Absolutely. This is one of the first games in a long time that really looks fun. Problem with most sim/strategy games is that they can be pretty boring. I'm usually very pessimistic about anything vaguely rpg using 3d but this just looks cool. I already pre-ordered one from amazon.
And the real people who made money during the California gold rush were the women who went there. All those men didn't have any cooking skill. They sold them pies for $20 each. There is money to made on the internet. Selling things to suckers who are trying to sell things to suckers.
What with the comment about moderation in his last post, this makes me think that Katz is becoming disillusioned with slashdot, maybe?
He's probably mad because all those posts calling him an idiot get modded up. I've only been on slashdot for a couple of months. Why is John Katz hated so much? I'm not saying he shouldn't be. He's obviously day-dreaming if he thought the internet was going to bring world peace and save the children. I'm just curious.
Start a mini-dialogue down here. Why do you hate JonKatz?
All those stupid business men who have invented web technologies, thinking they were going to get rich. They're ticked because we've taken all the new gadgets and they haven't got a penny back. The internet is a great revolution. It has served the people well. Unfortunately, the people picking up the check want their piece.
That's why you see stricter and stricter rules for domain names. They haven't made any money off of the net. They don't know how to. But they're going to kill us or themselves trying
Operating systems sales can't be that good especially since computer sales have slumped. Why would they care what platform you use the software on as long as you don't get to keep it and they're the ones renting it?
Ok. Most games today give the enemies the ability to learn and adapt. Does that mean that their a-life? When I kill those little baddies am I really just killing innocent life. I can't wait till PETA gets a hold of this idea. Stop the gameboys! Please, for the children.
The single identifying trait of real life is when it shocks it's creator. That's what HAL did. Its what we do every day.
Never heard of them.
Well, it can't be a very accurate way of measuring viewer preferences. The bbc still exists. ;)
American Trolling. Drive slowly and on the right.

I wish movie guidelines were that way.

Can you tell I'm proud to be southern?:)

Thank you sir! I tip my hat at you. Someone please mod this man up. +7 humanity.
I am not a advertising receptacle. I am not a entertainment. I am a human being. I deserve the right to be left alone.

Wouldn't feeding a neural net slashdot stories be considered "AI abuse!"
Mod this up. This funny.
But seriously he probably isn't American. or maybe not
