I'm not a linux guru and I've never compiled my own kernel so don't get worked up if I say something wrong. I assume what your saying why not just put compile options into the kernel. If you did that you would have to recompile the whole kernel everytime you changed security or tested something new. This way you can just compile your own personal security modules. Lots quicker and more easily configurable.
Okay, I see the article was about modules instead of file permissions. No, I didn't read it. Kernel articles are usually far too technical to read through. I'm stupid. I'm an idiot...stop me anytime here.:)
It would be nice if there was permission for internet or network access. Anyone who has use zonealarm under windows knows how needed this is. In this day of trojans no application should be connecting to the internet on my computer unless I know specifically what it's doing. That would help linux really become a desktop alternative.
I like commercial apps. I think the one thing that annoys me about windows is that every app is a commercial app. They even try to sell you zip utilities. But I actually like getting commercial apps more than free ones. There's something about getting you software from a bright shiny box with a real instruction manual. It's just more polished. I see those little boxes in the store, and I can't resist. Their crying for me. "Take us home!" Don't worry! I'll save you little proggies.
Thanx but that unless everyone starts using opendivx streaming I'm probably not going to watch too much streaming media. Actually asf isn't bad and I don't worry too much about privacy with it.
Thank you, you said everything I was thinking. I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a elite hacker. I don't know how to program. (Well a little assembly and C. I'm trying.) I am pretty technically competent though. I just don't like the whole idea. Especially the part where I store my personal data on servers run by a company that seems to have no security knowledge or morals whatsoever.
Hardcore linux users say they hate the gui-is-the-os thinking. Well I hate linux's the-server-is-the-os thinking. Don't get me wrong. I like linux. It's just that I use it for the free development tools. I installed Mandrake with the developer setting, and lookee here. I've got an anonymous ftp server, news server, and web server running by default.
Those are pretty easy to shut off, and they shouldn't have been on in the first place. But what about xservers. Why do I need remote display? Sure lots of people do, but do I need it. It makes me so jittery because I don't know all the security wholes in x. I know it's probably secure but still I don't need it. Why isn't there any non-server x. Don't tell me it's impossible.
That's what I like about windows. The apps assume that you aren't connected to the internet. It may sound silly to all those MS haters, but I only connect to the internet with windows. Why? I've got zonealarm in windows. I trust that. Linux is so complicated that even if I'm pretty sure that I've gotten everything, I can't be sure. As I remember one of the main reason early techs advocated home computers over mainframes is that they wanted user data to be secure.
One of the other posters above said that I don't really own my software right now. But the basis of ownership is control. If I own a piece of land that means that I have sole control over it. The laws of adverse possession recognize this. If you squat on someones land for so long you own it. That's why I don't like this. It's taking my ownership away from me.
I would use this on linux as long as the source code for the server side software was available. After all, I already have an xserver running on linux. Why not another server?
Is there no free open alternative to real player? They have a great format, but I don't like their privacy policy. Besides it would be nice to be able to get third party players. It just annoys me that the only really good streaming audio and video format for low end connections is proprietary
I guess I wasn't specific enough. There is a huge difference between theory and practice. In theory I don't own any of my software. In practice, they most likely aren't going to break down my door and steal my cd-roms. As long as I have my Netscape cd and my windows98 cd they can't reasonably stop me from using it.
I have a certain degree of power over my software. With free software, I have absolute control over my software. If x company decides to they aren't making enough money off y app, I still have it. If they shut down their server, I'm out of luck.
I like windows over linux, but if this becomes common enough that I can't buy apps for a reasonable price then that's the way I'm headed.
Yeah, I understand why a business would love this. Just have a little basement server with all the proggies on it. Lots of cute little display windows everywhere else. Cheap! Except if the server gets a virus. Then you lose everything. I could understand universities wanting this too. MS will get what they want: a steady dependable revenue stream. Maybe once they get that the prices for home software will go down. The cynical side of me doubts this.
How many people really jump up and down at the idea of not owning software. I don't see anything in this that will ever make me not want to own my apps outright.
The idea as I understand it is to leave the gui at home and move all of the processing onto the servers. There's just no reason for that. We live in a day of celeron's and athlons. The most commonly used apps are web browsing and word processing. Word processing isn't processor intensive or at least it shouldn't be. If a word processor chews up my 433 MHz celeron it needs to go. The really processor intensive things like encoding and image editing aren't going to really benefit from this. What time would you save by uploading a huge wav and letting a remote server turn it into an mp3 and then ship it back to you.
This is just a plan to get us to get people hooked before they realize the newest Word isn't really any better than the last.
KDE is nice. I like the qt widget look. It's sort of like MS but it's better. One thing I like about gtk is the little bar that you see when gimp starts up. That's pretty much all though. Most gtk apps seem to have their borders too thick. Most linux apps don't seem to recognize that everyone doesn't have the same screen resolution.
One thing I like about GNOME is that you can customize a lot of things with simple menus. I don't like the way that everything has to be a link object in KDE. Like mime types. In KDE there is a folder with mime-type links. Personally I've never been able to make them work. On the other hand GNOME has a nice configuration tool for that. Links should be for programs or files.
I only read one of his books. Neuromancer. I thought it was crap and I haven't read any of the other ones. I hate the fact that most sci-fi writers completely ignore humans in their stories. Robert Heinlein knew how to make you care about people not technology. His novels were about the human spirit harnessing technology. Most sci-fi's are about technology locking in the human spirit.
Don't boycott. Buy the disks, take them home, hook them up, tear up all the packaging on the inside, and then take them back to the store for a refund. Tell the clerk the disk is defective, because it would let you copy what you wanted. It's the truth. They can't just put it on the shelfs. They'll eventually stop stocking that disk if they keep having to take them back.
SDL is source compatible, but not binary compatible. If you change lib versions you have to recompile all of your apps. Of course if you want to distribute your game as a binary just do what loki does. I assume they statically link it.
I was thinking that it would be a bit easier because the domains would be limited to linux users. Most linux users wouldn't care if non-linux users couldn't see their domain. The top level domains that you speak of are going to be used by everyone in the world. I not sure if ownership and trademark would be a big issue since it would be a non-governmental organization. The big companies would try of course. But I'll be the first to admit that I'm know very little of the technical aspects of this. Still, it was a beautiful dream:)
The email is nice. The icq is useless. As for the banners. I don't know about the linux version but in the windows version if you browse at full screen you don't see them. I personally don't mind because their banners are usually pretty interesting stuff. If you're a student you can get it for half price.
Sorry! I didn't mean to slight debian. It was the second distro I tried.:) Don't forget.bsd too. Just as long as we got rid of.cx. I did the stupid thing. I didn't have any money and I registered my name with namezero. Now I'm not sure if they will let me have it back.
What I really wanted to do is set up my own email system using everyone.net service. Later on I might try some other stuff, but the thing is that this decision kinda push normal people like me out of the picture. I don't want a.nym or.name. I should have every right to keep my.org. I'm non-profit. Seriously though, has anyone ever actually run this idea by some of the distros. I wouldn't really have the nerve to bother them with it.
Great minds think alike. I've had that idea before. If all the linux distros got together and agreed to set up an alternate domain name system, they could all be registrars and make a killing. They're going under selling support. Why not offer a free domain name everytime you buy one of their distros. Domain names are really overpriced. Basically your just paying someone to enter your name in a database. Each distro could even have their own tld..rh.mdk.suse.ydl.tux and of course.gnu
I fail to see how I give males a bad name for opposing murder. As for your other comment, the holocaust is comparable to abortion. No there is no one person leading everyone to commit these acts. That is actually worse. The tragedy of the holocaust is not about madmen. It is really about ordinary, nice, friendly people who just accepted what they were told and willingly, politely killed 6 million other people. There civil servants who were in charge of filing the papers on exterminations. When one man was asked later, he said that he really didn't think much about it. It was just like filling out a form to have cattle destroyed. Years later many receptionists and workers at abortion clinics may say the same thing. Even most abortion doctors admit they aren't at peace with what they are doing.
I don't see how I've given any man a bad name. Men who run out on women give men a bad name. Women who abort their children give women a bad name. A woman who aborts her child and a woman who beats her infant toddler to death are no different to me. They are murderers. As I said, I make no apologies for my opinion. I am one of the most liberal persons in the world. Most people find me too radical.
I realize that you will say that I'm just a right-wing Christian nut. I don't claim to have perfect understanding, but I do know that some things are just wrong. You can't walk the middle ground with murder. There is no way that you can say "Oh, well you might be right."
This isn't some ambiguous political debate where several courses of action may be equally worthy. There are no good arguments for abortion. All of them are half and half.
Abortionists claim that a fetus isn't a child. They have no way of knowing that. They choose to believe that because it makes their lives more comfortable. Even if you really do believe that, do you want to stake another persons life on your own opinion? Abortionist claimed that abortion would reduce child abuse, because people wouldn't have children if they couldn't afford them. I don't think even need to point out why this is wrong. Abortionist claim that it is a woman's right to have an abortion. This is something like saying that I have the right to kill all of my house guests. A right is a fundamental action that must be given to people to ensure their continued freedom. Free speech, the right to fair trial, the right to bear arms (yes even that one) are things that ensure that not only we are free, but our children are. We do not have the right to kill people. That is a desire. Not all desires are right or lawful. The constitution does not guarantee that we will be happy. We are guaranteed the pursuit of happiness. The rights we possess are given to ensure that the pursuit of happiness is never taken from us. When our happiness only comes at the death of others, we do not have the right to enact that happiness.
This having been said, I do not enjoy having to say this. I am liberal and respect other people who have different ways of living and different ways of thinking. If there were any way for me to reconcile abortion with basic morality, I would try. There just is no way to do that.
I do wish to revise my post above thought. I feel that what these people are doing is constitutional and protected by their right to free speech, but I think they should be prevented from having the doctors personal information on their site. This is stalking.

I graduated two years ago and I'm a sophmore in college right now. Let me just say this. It's not bullying. In the school I went to, all of the teachers were related in some way. They didn't know shit, and they didn't give a shit. The basic philosophy in schools now is handle it yourself. The school can't do anything to anyone because mommy comes down and wants to no why your persecuting her precious little boy. No one wants a law suit, so it gets dropped. Most of they others didn't know what the hell they were teaching. They all got their jobs because the school board is one huge family. No one who isn't related gets to be a teacher. It's that way in most places. There were a few teachers who make it all worthwhile. They don't pose as Mr. Chips for the parents. They tried to help you learn something because they knew it was going to be tough.
My parents were good. I have no complaints about them. We're living in an age of greed. Most people wax philosophical about "It takes a village." What that means for them is that they can depend on the school and the government and everyone else to make sure their children are being raised right.
I know most of this isn't coherent, but sometimes you just have to scream, rant, rave, and let it out.

The question here is whether cheering at someones death and suggesting that you'd like for them to die is acceptable. I don't like the idea, but to deny them their right to free speech would be to deny everyone. That's why we have to protect even people like this. After all, I thought this link was funny.
What the hell are voxels? Sounds like something from H2G2. Seriously though, if everyone gets 3d displays how long will it be before rubber doll jokes change over to holometric doll jokes? Man can pervert any invention.;)
I assume they are talking about real 3d here, not just a new kind of monitor. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Jon missed his calling. He should have been recruited for Battlefield Earth. What's wrong Jon? Still ticked that all those people who checked your box off in their preferences?
I'm finally beginning to see why people hate this guy. Every article he's put out in the last 3 weeks is a boring little whine fest. Oh nooo! Personalized media allows people to turn off my driveling opinion. What will I do? Where will I go? Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn.
Next in a series. Mute...Cute little button or Satan's helper? You be the judge.
IANAALP (I Am Not An Assembly Language Programmer) I have made a few Hello Worlds!, Message Boxes, and some kind of a response from SDL with assembly. Just sort of playing around. Thanks for the info. I'm going AMD all the way. Even if Intel does have backwards support I'm still going with AMD. I've been considering upgrading for a long time. I'm glad I didn't now.

I won't apologize for that.) On the other hand, I don't think it is right to advocate people being killed because they disagree with them.

Man can pervert any invention. ;)
Windows + Intel = Wintel
Windows + AMD = Whammed
Linux + Intel = Lintel (soup?)
Linux + AMD = Lammed (lambed? lamed?)
