In the early 80's, I used to do tech support on some of the earliest commercial Unix systems. Vi was just about all you could use to edit system files when dialing in to a customer's system at 1200-2400 baud.

I used it so much during that time, my neurons became permanently wired to the command set. I still find myself using vi to edit system files, mostly because it's what I've always done... and yes, I'm really fast with it.

  12. This seasoned animator's view on Image Metrics May Revolutionize Facial Animation · · Score: 5, Insightful

I've been doing 3D character animation for well over a decade, and I've also been exposed to automated facial animation systems including mocap (in many of it's various forms) over the years. I actually think mocap is not bad for certain applications, particularly whole body stuff like athletics. If you really want that golf swing to look like Tiger Woods in his video game, then mocapping him is a very valid option.

What it's not good at, however, is animating the face. People have been trained since birth to observe human faces and we're experts. It makes us very aware of anything that's unnatural. Only a human who innately understands the subtleties of human emotions can truly finesse facial animation so it looks pleasing to the human eye. An animator is just that type of person. We study facial expression, musculature and all sorts of things, then combine it with acting skills and artistic knowledge to make a result that's looks pleasing to the eye (or not.. depending on budgets and deadlines - and I suspect this technology will filter down to the low end productions that don't care as much about the final results)

How would the bleeding-heart left have reacted if we'd sent an assassination team to kill Osama?

Bleeding heart... what a lovely label.

Bill Clinton did bomb Bin Laden's camps in 1998 in an attempt to assasinate him. The Republican response was that Clinton was "wagging the dog"

In March 2002, after Osama had destroyed the WTC and thousands of lives, Bush was asked about Osama and his response was "I am really not that concerned about him."

The Republicans said nothing to that. Now... who's the bleeding heart?

Well... when Clinton got a similar warning about a possble millenium plot, he "shook the trees" so to speak and put everyone on high alert. They actually caught the bomber coming across the border in Canada.

When Bush got his warning on August 6th, 2001, he told the guy that he "covered his ass" and then went back to clearning brush.

  18. Re:Not the only administration on Administration Ignored Bin Laden Intel · · Score: 1

There is plenty of blame to go around.

Perhaps... but Clinton is at least honest and owns up to his failures. He did try to get Bin Laden back in 1998 when he bombed the camps -- despite that the Republicans said he was "wagging the dog"

This administration never owns up - they cover up their failures and point fingers. Perhaps if they admitted fault, I might be more inclined to spread the blame, but the fact that they obfuscate and cover up just adds more taint to an already abysmal record. This administration are the ones who did absolutely nothing when warned during the summer of 2001. The result of that inaction was the loss of several thousand lives.

I have a few close friends who I email almost daily. I tell these few friends the details of my life, both good and bad. I've saved all my emails since about 1995, so I have over 10 years of my history recorded in this manner.

A few months ago, I was going through some personal stuff about a relationship that had just ended. I wondered what the heck was I thinking when I decided to start dating this woman. So, I went back in my emails to the time when I started dating her and there were all my thoughts right there. I realized I was deluded when I started dating her, and knowing that made me feeel better for some reason. So, I guess going back in that fashion can have it's benefits, but I think recording absolutely everything is a bit much.

I'm sure a diary/journal would serve similar purposes, but for some reason, this works for me.
