M$ is infamous for announcing software that they may never ship, just to keep people from rushing out to buy the competitors products. This is one of the dirty tricks that M$ learned from IBM. This is one of the questionable business practices that IBM was forced to abandon as a result of its federal anti-trust trial. IBM had to wait until just few months (forgot exact number, = 3 ?) before a product would actually ship before they were allowed to announe the product.
When it comes to lack of freedom you can count on Bill Gates and the People's Republic of China to deliver. See the story at: http://www.infoworld.com/cgi-bin/displayStory.pl?9 90310.ecgateschina.htm
People who fail to grant RMS the respect that he deserves are the people who miss the point of freed software.
RMS gave Linus and the rest of us the freedom we enjoy today to use/modify/distribute our software with the GNU GPL.
The GPL is most significant achievement in the history of software because it makes possible the cooperative development that will eventually change the world. Mark my words.
What is all this about Open Sores?

If the wound does not heal within a fortnight have a medical doctor examine it.
When Sierra starts hiring again, the managers in Seattle will hire their friends, nephews and mistresses to replace the masses of workers laid off in this "big, bad re-org."
Corporate HQ in Seattle wanted to thin out the ranks and move the remaining talent to their home turf. There must have been a great cultural rift between old timers in Oakhurst and the new managers in Seattle.
I wonder if any of the management at Sierra that they recently recruited are M$ refugees?
Kudos to the many laid-off programmers and artists from Sierra. By no fault of your own, you have been shafted. Take some time to deal with the pain. Then move on.
We can all thank Mr Stallman for the explosive growth of cooperative sw development made sustainable by the GNU General Public License.
I predict that this cooperative model will spread to other industries. In the very long term the GPL could be a significant contribution to the advancement cultural evolution.
As most of us already know, the origins of capitalism are in the cooperative pooling of money to fund overseas voyages. These voyages were both extremely profitable and extremely risky. By cooperating and selling shares in a venture, the proto-capitalist were able to distribute the risks and increase their individual chances of remaining solvent. Since one bad voyage (ship not return) was expensive enough to break the bank of any single player, this distributed risk system quickly weeded out the less cooperative competition.
As was pointed out in several other posts here:
Yes, American 21st century society is a complex addaptive system. A pragmatic mix of capitalism, socialism, puratanism with just a pinch of egalatarianism. What separate our society from most others is the emphasis that our constitution places on _liberty_. IMHO the Free Software Foundation is correct in pointing out the value that freedom has is worth far more than some short term security.
Too often we are told of the failure of Socialism. Much of this has to do with the break-up of the Soviet Union. The fatal flaw in this reasoning is that we would not want to judge the validity of capitalism by how well our eastern european friends do under our system. So it is silly to judge socialism by how well the same people did by (their attempt at) that system.
Stay tuned for the exciting final act where "the expropriators are expropriated."
Cheers

The good news is that all the mainstream media are reporting about free software. Could this be the result of a Microsoft PR campaign designed to help soften the remedy that the US DOJ will impose when the anti-trust trial concludes?
I did not know that he was an old clueless Merton fan. That really fails to impress me. I had the impression that he was a sixteen year old that was still learning grammer and spelling.
Just goes to show you, anyone can write a book and get it published.
Why should anyone waste their time/money reading it, I will never understand.
Maybe JK can start his own web site called KatzDot.org (Clueless rantings, stuff that matters not.)
After spending decades in the Cathedral of Software Development, I can attest to the value of seeking a mate from other domains. Don't waste your time trying to find a geek-girl because they are too rare. How about a nice girl that knows next to nothing about computers. There are millions of them looking for Mr. Right.
If you want to marry a younger woman, try exploring asian cultures, many asian woman prefer a man that is five to ten years her senior.
If you want a woman who knows how to take care of things, try a divorced woman in her early forties.
Many of us feel a strong attraction to anything that has blinking lights or moving parts.
Call it a techo-fetish if you will.
I saw the trailer twice tonight. I loved it!

Keep up the good work.

ESR concluded with the statement,
" We are much more likely to "corrupt" business than it is to "corrupt" us. "
I belive that ESR is correct.
In the long run, the freedom that the GNU GPL gives to the software development, is likely to spread to other industries.
Peace, love, software and physical life support!

Same as the old boss.
