  1. The best thing about this competition on FIRST Robot Competition Wraps Up · · Score: 1

Even though i live on the other side of the world and was hence unable to attend or be a part of the competition, i was able to catch the (albeit too short) cnn spot. The thing that impressed me the most was the aspect of the competition where the teams were thrown together the had to work in unison to achieve a single goal. Here they learn their most valuable lessons in co-operation, the benefits of which far outweigh the significant engineering skills obtained

Interestingly many developed nations are already suffering from salinisation. This occurs when the water table floods due to unrestrained irrigation. Thus these varieties of crops will enable this land to become productive again

  7. Re:Deep ocean rigs? on Drilling For Oil With Megawatt Lasers · · Score: 1

No its rubbish for drilling at sea

  8. Potential Problem on Drilling For Oil With Megawatt Lasers · · Score: 2
This system seems cool, but there is a number of catches

Firstly conventional drilling technology employs fixed drill bits, which use water and suction to remove rock debris. This system has no such facility for that.

Also it is very difficult to drill down and then sideways, as is common with current methods. Without this facility, the oil rig or platform is useless once the oil below has been used up

Conventional drilling also places a pipe as the bit moves forward, cementing the drill hole. With this system the hole must be "burned" and then a pipe forced down. This process will negate any speed gains in the actual drilling

  18. Better than a satellite? on NASA Launches Largest Single-Cell Balloon · · Score: 1
*Looks like an interesting alternative to satellites for certain observations.*

This balloon is a pretty poor alternative for most applications that satellites can do.

Weather Observation Firstly to view a wide area the vechicle needs to be high. This balloon would not travel high enough to view a decent area

SpyingWhat good is a balloon that goes where ever it pleases and has a radar signature the size of a concrete building

Communications Again no point- The balloon's direction can't be controled, so its no good for a relay node.

Space observationThe platform is too unstable, since it still flies in the albeit thin atmosphere. You would need some pretty snazy gyroscopes to stabilise any sort of space monitoring equipment.

  19. To answer your question.... on The Modem Lives On · · Score: 3
Satellite for web gaming is possibly worse than your current 28.8k modem.

The key with online gaming is not bandwidth but latency. The packets you are sending are not particularly big, but they need to go fast. Take this example- Say you are playing a game with good net code (eg Tribes) on a 56k modem in the US on a server in Europe. If you then switch to a T1 line, your latency would not improve significantly-the signal still has to travel physically around the world. (Light circles the earth in 200ms, so in transmission the lowest ping to europe would be 100ms. Then we have to include latency around the computer, and the "last mile."

Satellite, while having good bandwidth, will probably have such bad latency that you can forget upbout any online games (including cards at msn gaming). The signal first has to travel up to the sat from your house. Given atmospheric signals, some of it will be lost and will be have to sent again. It then has to travel down to a microwave dish in europe, again with more signal losses. From there it has to route itself around various diseperate telecoms networks. The round trip in simple distance is probably greater than your 28.2k modem, and hence latency is greater.
If you need any more discouragement to get satellite internet- the bird is probably owned by microsoft.
Probably the best way to improve your latency would be to buy a 56k modem and find a very local isp who hosts a server of your favourite game. My Isp is in my suburb and has this arrangement.
