I've seen alot of companies hiring people based off of their proven abilities in the mod field.
Likewise, I've seen people use their contacts in the mod community to get better jobs.
With some of the newer games coming out with good tool support (Unreal 2k3 has dedicated programs included, for example) for people to make their own content (be it maps, models, sounds, what have you), I fully expect game companies to actively search out mod teams.
Obvious case in point: Think about what Valve would be doing right now if it wasn't for a very small number of mods.. (Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, Action Half-life, etc... Especially Counter-Strike)
One part of it is that it's something people are accustomed to seeing, so a score of X is more meaningful to them than one from some game without any sense of reference. People also still play Q3 a fair bit, with baseq3, Urban Terror, Reaction Quake 3, and so on all being played.
As well, when video cards come out every six months, and games like the Quake series every year or more, you're going to see the same game used for a while.
Once Doom 3, Unreal 2k3, eetc. come out. maybe those will be added to benchmarks.. Who knows.
I managed to create a random number generator in x86 assembly that instead of working properly, would instead open another (picking at random.. who knows how it even got the file names..), opened it, and printed its contents to the screen..
also, I don't think a large sitting body of water like that wouldn't be able to circulate very well to let off heat.. water coolers all have the water flowing throw piping and such before the resevoir, letting off heat, same as the coolant pipes on the back of a fridge.
while I agree that ogg vorbis, mp3, ect. are popular, I don't know that I woul say it's about to become a true industry standard soon. Not because of the copyright issues, but due to the fact that a large percentage of the population is not computer literate enough to use them. While programs like napster and media jukebox have deifiently made the use of these files a far cry easier than was ever possible with ratio FTP sites, ect, until the msic industry distributes mp3/ogg/whatever CD's (never gonna happen IMHO), a large percentage of people will never use them.
had a great Customer Service rep once

I was having serious problems with my CPU booting wrong (a P2-266 booting as a P1-266 and a P2-133 alternately according to the BIOS), and the rep not only fixed the problem fairly quickly, he also was friendly and cheerful enough that it wasn't in the least painful. He even gave me his personal e-mail address for if I had any further problems.

I don't use assembly anymore, amazingly enough..
IIRC, America used to have rainbow coloured bills back in the 1800's, before going to greenbacks.
