First I dont run wuftpd, I use proftpd. That eliminates one of the areas of problems.
You really think that proftpd is inherently more secure than wu-ftpd? As far as I can make out, that's bullshit. If you really care about security have a look at stackguard.
Point being nothing can make a system absolutely secure but using invalid assumptions like that will get you nowhere.
Ever meet a CD with software that required you to type in a "CD key"? Like recent Windows? Or Diablo II? That's not one-off pressing, yet
each CD is unique. Marking of audio CDs can be done similarly.
No. Not every CD is unique, the codes will in most cases work with any CD you come across. As a point of interest, would you care to elaborate how unique marking is to be done without one-off pressing?

So I go out to IRC and spam everyone to change their nameservers to point to the new root name server instead of the internic one. A few might be unwilling, a few might be confused, but the great mass of users will jump at the chance.
What's with the assumption there? I certainly wouldn't touch a DNS server that some random person told me about on IRC! The fact is, that by using the "official" servers I can pretty much guarantee that when people give me a URL or machine name that I will be able to successfully look it up; if I've using your rogue service, I could get anything. And I think that quite a few of the users of your ISP would cotton onto this as well.
This reminds me of an idea that I had a while ago that is based on the fact that something like 75% of the price of a CD goes to the record companies, while the artists gets maybe £1 ($1.5) of revenue.
So what we need to do is persuade artists to market music electronically for a much lower cost.
We could do this by simply sending the artists some money saying: this is for your album xxx which I have on mp3 because I am making a stand against record companies' uncompetitive practises.
...and what will the support be for the Xpert 98 card? Even in Windows the support is pretty dicey. The only OpenGL support is a fairly crap Quake II implementation.
Something that, suprisingly no-one seems to have mentioned - apologies if I've missed it - what was the legal status of the mp3s that were linked to?
People have been assuming (it seems to me) that they were illegal bootlegs, but some of the comments imply that they were legal, but not intended for public distribution.
What is the truth?

Or maybe it's a convenient way for certain people to read your email as a matter of course?????
Didn't they have to remove all the swear-words from the source so that it could be legally exported to somewhere-or-other?

Time for a slashdot poll on the issue then?

Actually the windows msdos.sys in not part of the OS in the sense that msdos.sys used to be. It's actually text, along the lines of:
[Paths]
WinDir=C:\WINDOWS
WinBootDir=C:\WINDOWS
HostWinBootDrv=C
[Options]
BootMulti=1
Logo=1
BootGUI=1
DoubleBuffer=1
AutoScan=1
WinVer=4.10.1998
plus padding.
That's another good point: speed o pronounciation.
So we have going for linn-ux:
- closer to the Swedish original
- closer to Linus + Minix --> Linux
- quicker and easier to pronounce
Why bother with anything else?
The difference - one is a proper noun and should be pronouced in the original form - ie. leen-ux
But surely these count as two separate entities at the moment, with different codebases.

This same attitude has led to the repression of scientific and technological advances since the days of Galileo.
Maybe if this were not the case we would all be driving cars that run on water, or travelling at near-light speeds towards other solar systems..
640x480 is actually pretty watchable, when you consider that videoCD for example is only about 320 x something...
As far as I can see it's another sign of completely unjustified greed, just another way to screw the artists.
I suppose we should just hope more artists start bypassing the big labels, like using mp3 distribution?
