LOL, yeah, that is why Linux doesn't' exist on the desktop. I use it all the time at work for projects but it stopped being a personal desktop for me roughly 6-7 years ago... maybe longer, can't remember anymore. I stuck with OS/2 until 96-97 too so it isn't like I don't give alternatives a chance past their obvious primes. My first Linux installation was Slackware 2.4 and the last one I personally used was Ubuntu X.X. Luckily Apple took FreeBSD and made it very usable and so I have a MBP now. I have a Nexus 7 though so I can claim to still be a Linux user.
Evi Stopped teaching Unix Sys Admin the semester I took it (you were a good teacher Tor, I just was looking forward to Emi). I remember her smiling at me going through the hallway between classes, funny how I remember that. I think I was a little star struck because she was the equivalent of an A list celebrity in the UNIX world.
against our "stout" principles. I'm a libertarian leaning type of guy, that said... I abhor child abuse and especially child sexual abuse, it should be an automatic death sentence, so if they got even one fucking child rapist, I somehow find myself turning a blind eye to this obvious subversion of personal rights.
How is Apple unique in being a corporation that works on not paying tax? Frankly corporate taxes should just go away, they are just passed on to the consumer as it is.
They haven't been losing market share. Revenue has been getting squeezed but iOS is where it is at if you want the largest market for selling your apps or accessories.
I think the point is that he only achieved 77TB by violating the TOS. Let me see somebody violate the TOS without running servers or scripting downloads.
I use it for server work all the time, personal and professional, but I left it 6 years ago when OS X finally matured to the point where I preferred it.
His issues are issues that users have been having for some time. My first Linux was Slack 2.4 I believe and I moved to Mac OS X in 2007. It is nice having something that just works. In a way OS X is FreeBSD finally getting the recognition it deserved.
I purchased a Nexus 7 as my personal tablet because of the cost, size and performance. We are an Apple household, I prefer Unix over Windows and many years ago I switched from Linux to OS X as my main operating system. We have 3 Macs, 4 iPhones, and an iPad which was a gift. We had looked at getting an iPad once but I just didn't like the overall experience and a lot of that was the size of it. The iPad mini needs to come down about $70. I got a 32Gb Nexus 7 for $80 less than the 16Gb iPad and it does everything I need. That being said, I like the iOS user experience better and the selection of apps is much nicer.
Mod up 1000 points. Back in the day I had written a script to harvest data from gopher servers to convert the content to html pages and serve them up. You just made me smile, forgot all about gopher.
Yes, because groups like alt.images.tasteless back in the 80s and 90s represented the heyday of information sharing correct? All rise for Judge Mental. It's all zeros and ones.
Facebook will die and it will be a quick death, just like MySpace. It will rise again like MySpace did. Remember when you used to use talk (or ytalk even), QuantumLink, AOL, Compuserve, (insert company) Messenger... Facebook is looking at its future in seeing how fickle consumers are.

The planet is going to do what it will, no matter what we think or do. We've been doing research for how long? How big is our data pool? It is hubris to think that we know the answers, especially when you consider studies like this and the evidence of Norther Europe being warmer than right now within the last 2000 years shows that we don't know jack shit. I'd like to see a climate model and simulation that starts around the time of the national weather service and correctly and accurately predicts current conditions. I'd have more faith then.
Seriously though, it is stuff like this that makes people not want government having a hand in our everyday lives. There is no sense in this action, just some bureaucrat going by the book.
They have sold 3 million of the original which basically makes it second to the iPad in tablet sales. If B&N has the most popular apps ported over they will have a hit. There is no need to have every android app available as most people won't care about it, they just want their LOL Cats and Angry Birds.
I'm running CM 7.1 on it and am very happy with it. I have it overclocked to 1.2Ghz and I can run both the Nook and Kindle Android apps on it. I've been playing a lot of Madden 12 on it though and I need to set the graphics to medium or low though for decent performance. I think that B&N will do well if they have most of the popular apps available for it with the speed bump and dual core processor. Having the Hulu and Netflix apps is huge and the ability to have 48 gigs of storage is nice. I rip my DVDs using Handbrake and they run just playback just fine on the screen. I prefer the 7" screen to the 10 inch screen on the iPad and most tablets.

And Slashdot needs to let you edit after posting...

And when you do I'm sure you are thanked profusely... oh wait you're talking about the snack cakes?
Is that why Microsoft has floundered under Ballmer?

Amazing what FUD can do.

quite a way but seriously, this company just keeps falling further behind under Ballmer's watch. They are playing catch up and not innovating.

Why do they need to be?
Now complain about how much it sucks compared to before it was discovered and marketed for the masses.

Once you realize this you will be much happier.

Well duh, that's a given, so I wondered why it was newsworthy.
I'm gonna pop some popcorn while you two work this one out.
