Let's get terms firmly right here. A socialist, in the original meaning of the word, believes that the *producer* of work is the owner. Before the Limaughettes come running, this is *not* the same as USSR-style communism
And a capitalist, (American Style) believes that the person or organization that can con, defraud or steal the work from the producer and make it stick is the owner. Therefore the current "Democratic, Capitalist System", where a capitalist can buy all of the democracy he wants.
Does anyone in the/. crowd have any ideas what us non US-guys (and girls) should do about things like the SSSCA?
Well, just wait. As a Canadian, I can see where our fine neighbour to the south is heading. Protectionist legislation is the American way. Fair competition is given lip service, but if they can bully their way into dominating a market through buying legislation, they will. Eventually though, the "land of the free" and the "home of the brave" will simply become the police state that we've all been fearing since the 50's. And we were worried about the Russians. Just shows you what saps we were.
The war on drugs was all about stripping away individual rights. The war on terrorism is finishing the job. (Not to mention lining Bush Sr.'s pockets) Those who can buy politicians get richer, those who can only vote, don't.
So, my advice would be to just wait. Eventually it will be the entire world against the U.S. (probably right after the tanks roll into Canada) Then we'll see where the chips fall after that.
and Microsoft (with their patent on the DRM OS [cryptome.org]) collecting the ca$h.
I saw this coming a long time ago. I'm stocking up now.

At this point, why not. The federal government is only in the war business anyway. Look at the Bush family and the Carlyle group for instance. War=$$$. That's it, that's all. Somehow, I can't think we'd be better off with 50 state governments. At least you'd have a choice of where to live. As it is, we're all patsies for the folks with the cash.
Early on in this fiasco, I remember seeing a remedy that made sense. Your comment about opening the file formats to Office reminded me.
Open file formats and BSD licence the entire Windows* codebase.
Probelm solved. MS would have to compete on features, stability and price. Winners: consumers. Losers: Well, they already are, even if they haven't figured it out yet.
from the faq: "We also plan a detection system that will automatically stop the vehicle if there is an obstacle in the guideway."
Oh that's a nice feature to plan for;) I suppose the original plan was to add big nerf-style bumpers instead so that at 25mph the unobservant kiddies would just bounce off gently:P
Nope. This was the original idea for keeping the way clear. It may still be implemented in less civilized parts of the world, like nyc.
you put Linux on there, you can't just click "Uninstall" and have it go away.
Why not have a bootable CD with a full distro installed? Have/home on the HD as well as a few other dir's for driver config. When demo/trial finished, have script delete these folders. No muss, no fuss.
That's the same dispicable, disgusting sickening attitued I'd expect from a tinker-toy OS loving linux zealot such as yourself. It's idiotic that anyone would go out of their way to snub a large part of their potential audience, just becuase you don't agree with the OS someone else uses.
I could go along with your diatribe if I was a Linux zealot, or if the issue at hand had anything to do with Linux elitism. It doesn't and I don't. It has to do with one user setting conditions that must be met for anyone to communicate with him. Period. If you won't meet the conditions, that's your choice.

Not funny at all. According to Microsoft, Outlook was "just built that way" and I quote
"Will the virus impact my Macintosh if I am using a non-Microsoft e-mail program, such as Eudora? If you are using an Macintosh e-mail program that is not from Microsoft, we recommend checking with that particular company. But most likely other e-mail programs like Eudora are not designed to enable virus replication.
So, if you were writing a program (trojan) that was designed as a virus delivery system (trojan), would you get upset if someone created a method for alerting users to this aspect (trojan) of your software? (Anti-Virus) The key here is that even Microsoft acknowledges that Outlook transmits viriii by design.
We aren't "forcing him to conform", we're forcing him to write in a format usable by all (you know, free means free across all boards, including proprietary).
O.K., let's change the focus. Use a RFC Compliant e-mail program (not OE or Outlook) and you can belong to the list and read my mail. If you CHOOSE to not use a compliant mailer, well, that's your choice.
If the standard is to communicate in letters and you insist on using binary numbers, what would that make you? Elitist?
After all, everyone understands 1's and 0's don't they?
Then he has contradicted himself and doesn't believe in free software. He believes in free software that's approved by him. His "moral stand" is in error.
This really has nothing to do with that. He is excluding people from communicating with him based on their choices (or lack thereof). Not choosing is still a choice, whether it's concious or not.
So if you use Windows, you must be some diseased leper who isn't fit to lick the boots of Nick Moffitt. What a jerk. This is exactly the kind of person who turns people off to Linux, free software, etc.
Nope, wrong. If you are not technically competent enough to figure out how to play, you don't get to. Simply screening out, using his criteria. I know plenty of technically competent people who use Windows that would have no problem figuring this out.

I see nothing productive in this article or the attitude of its creator. The point of our movement is to produce good, useful software, and to make it available to everyone. The point is not to force them to use it, or to punish those who don't. Where's the freedom in that?
Well spoken. But the bottom line is... it's his choice. If you don't like it, too bad, don't participate. This in essence is what freedom is all about. How free is it if you make him conform to your idea of what is normal? It may feel free to you, but what about to him? I run a restaurant that has a dress code and we also do not allow smoking crack on the premises. My restaurant, my rules. You don't like how it impinges on your freedom... too bad, go somewhere else.
In this particular case, you are free to participate, simply by conforming to his rules. Too much work for you?? Don't understand how to do it?? These are the criteria, deal with it.
Seriously tho, what if the licensed owners (who paid for their right to use the frequency and received title from the government)
I would argue that the government had no right to sell the frequencies in the first place. Or if we're going to let this go to it's logical conclusion, I would like to purchase the entire visual spectrum and then I'll licence you to see using "my" frequencies.
You are right in the sense that doing that would be the best for Windows, especially in the long run. However, that scenario terrifies me more then anything.
Wrong. This would be the absolute worse thing for Windows. The whole monopoly is based on being the only system that will run legacy MS 32 bit code well. If people are faced with a clean break (new OS, new apps, new paradigm) they would NEVER choose MS based on merit. This will never happen for this reason. It's too big a risk for MS and their whole corporate strategy is based on offering LESS choice to consumers, not more.
Because I agree with him, I added negativekarmanow tm to my friends list. Since then, I have lost my ability to Metamoderate. (I used to do it daily for quite awhile) Very strange.
? How are you going to control that market, without resorting to shenanigans like strong-arming countries like the Ukraine. U.S. industry has to realize that it cannot dictate it's will to the rest of the world.
Same way they "control" oil and gas. If trade sanctions and political pressure don't work, send in the Marines. After all, we must protect our way of life. Even if that means shameless exploitation of people and things so that Suzie can shop the Gap and Billy can get his SUV.
It's really too bad that a Judge doesn't order Windows banned--because most people who pirate MP3's, etc. use Windows to do it. Hey, there's a good idea in there somewhere..
Nope. Really bad idea.
1. The judge demands that Windows incorporate DRM technology.
2. MS does it.
3. Judge rules all other OS's to incorporate same technology or face prosecution under the various greed laws.
4. Linux users revolt and refuse to do so.
