  1. not for my laptop... on Nuclear Battery That Runs 10 Years · · Score: 1

I spend most of my time trying to keep sharp, hot, or radioactive things away from my crotch, so radioactive laptop batteries just seem like a bad idea to me.

This technology is really cool though and there will be countless applications for it. Maybe radioactive waste could be used as the fuel for it.

  2. There are only two real enterprise level distros on Which Linux for Professional Admins? · · Score: 1

There are only two real enterprise level distros: SUSE and Red Hat. We have about 50-60 production linux boxes all running RHEL 3.0 AS. At $50 a node for educational institutions you just can't go wrong. The main reason we use Red Hat over SUSE is because out linux team had been using Red Hat linux since the stone age and we are comfortable with it. SUSE sounds like a great enterprise level distro as well, but I don't have a lot of production expirience with it. I'm not going near anything else as an admin because no one else has a corporate backing, and most managers won't go there either even if I wanted to.

I'm sure someone already mentioned it, but here's my $.02. Wolfenstein Enemy Territory rocks. It's free. It's the best multiplayer game to come out this year, hands down. It runs great on linux. I was able to play it with no problems on my PIII 667 with a GeForce2.

but if I'm trying to look up something and can't find it online in a couple minutes I generally just blow it off, as if there's no other place to look.

That pretty much sums it up for me. There's a lot of stuff out there on the web but there's not enough. I frequently end up looking for things which no one has posted. Which leads to a question. If I can go to the library and check out a book for free why then can't I check it out electronically and read it on my computer?
  6. Professional Developement on How Much Do Employers Budget for Education? · · Score: 1

I work at the Univeristy of Wisconsin - Madison in our somewhat central IT department called DoIT. Unofficially we can charge 5-10% of our time to a project called Professional Developement, which can be used to better yourself or work on projects that aren't technically related to your job. For example if you don't work with Linux in your job you can spend a couple hours a week learning about it at work. It's really nice and I think it encourages employees to learn more than just what they do in their job. I was also able to charge a day-trip to Comdex-Chicago to it as well. (Sadly it wasn't worth the trip but at least I got paid for it.)
