  1. You're gonna think I'm crazy, but ... on Ask Slashdot:Ergo Keyboards · · Score: 1

Yeah, IBM did know how to make keyboards. I've still got mine somewhere and for years I would use it in place of whatever piece o crap came with the system. A little annoying if someone else near you is using one however, but nice for you.

These days, however, I'm using a MS Natural instead. It's doesn't have the great keys, but the ergo setup is a better than even swap I think, especially if you program all day.

I just got a 2.0 a few weeks ago and like it. You're right about those half-sized cursor key, but I just use the numeric keypad. I'm a programmer, not a data entry drone, so I don't have a need for the keypad anywho. With a ten dollar rebate, the keyboard only cost $30 too.

I'd agree here. Now I'm not saying it's some grand plan. He's just found a way to get his writing attention. He seems to write articles that will get attention, with non-slashdot material like politics, and then stretch them like taffy to fit under the broad umbrella of 'technology'. Remember his Jesse Ventura post? I live in MN, and his was the only article I'd seen giving the WWW credit for Jesse's victory. But I'm sure he realized that an article about a wrestler becoming governor wasn't slashdot material, hence the net. Ventura's TV ads, his performance in the debates, and his popularity with young people were the reasons generally cited for his victory.

And I do remember the call to have you replace Katz, Chris, and for what it's worth I agreed then, and I agree now.

  4. xig, GGI, svgalib, X? on Voodoo3 Debut · · Score: 1

How does xig and Mesa solve Linux's 3D speed problems? In the current mess, we already have a free opengl library in Mesa, but it's too slow on X, svgalib doesn't support most chips, and GGI is still in flux.

I understand why OpenGL is a good thing, since a game can be written for both win32 and Linux simultaneously. But wouldn't better support for voodoo chips provide almost the same thing? Or is X still too slow? Doesn't hardware support for opengl still face the limitations for X, or is X somehow changed?

    Confusing.

  5. Mozilla on Harmony project Dead? · · Score: 1

Mozilla is using gtk+ with threading enabled, and have been for a couple months now.

Of course, Mozilla (SeaMonkey, Gecko, ... whatever) isn't a very stable creature at the moment, but I don't think that's the fault of GTK.

How good could Firewire be if it allows hooking a crappy IDE drive to it?

If it works--great! SCSI drives are too expensive. My 2.1Gig UW still costs about the same now as when I bought it two years ago. It's better if everyone buys what I buy. No need to be that rebelious.

But what I don't understand is why SCSI is being bypassed (yet again). It's going to be a while before Firewire get up to SCSI speeds. Why not just concentrate on SCSI?

Target a few companies that you'd like to work for (Ok to dream a little). Research a company using the web, and by inside info: make a call to somebody who works there, who can help you understand the job and what work needs doing. Then talk to the manager and show him you can do the job.

I know it sounds laborious, but you'll have better luck doing this than sending out a thousand resumes. For more info, check out the headhunter

    Good Luck.

Hehe. Loved it. I kept thinking of the Robin Hood cartoon all the way through. I liked the Vinod character the best.

How about Lord of the Rings next? Bill could be Sauron, Ed Muth plays Saruman, Vinod plays Wormtongue (hehe). Hmmm, except I don't quite see Linus as Frodo. More of a Gandalf really. Oh well ...
