  1. Re:Photorealistic? on Kingdom Hearts II Preview · · Score: 1

I know what GP means. I've been playing DragonQuest VIII and watching some LooneyToons DVDs (Xmas presents for me and wifey). The DragonQuest animation looks better than the BugsBunny cartoons.

Bugs Bunny still wins for better plots and music.

Regardless, BBEdit does feature good python integration.

But I agree, BBEdit is overpriced. I originally bought BBEdit back in the 1990s (when it was reasonably priced). I finally got fed up with paying for upgrades.

That's the main reason I learned Vim. Steep learning curve, but the price is right.

  3. Text Editors... on Python IDE for Mac OS X? · · Score: 5, Interesting

If I'm learning a language (as opposed to working on a project with others), I find I seldom need all the bells and whistles an IDE provides.

I know of two text editors that provide excellent Python integration.

    * BBEdit: http://www.barebones.com/products/bbedit/index.sht ml
    * Vim: http://macvim.org/OSX/index.php

I like Vim better for two reasons. First, it is slightly cheaper; and secondly it has the words Don't Panic inscribed
in large friendly letters on its cover.

  4. You did the right thing... it's their problem. on Computer Jobs -- How to Resign Professionally? · · Score: 3, Interesting

It seems like IT professionals are getting like investment brokers: when you give them two weeks notice they give you the money and ask you to leave.

I don't think it's anything personal. It's just the way some businesses nowadays prefer to operate. I think it's a mistaken attempt at managing risk. Think about it: would a guy who wants to screw you over give two weeks notice? No, they'd do you dirt and take off with no notice.

Not exactly true. AppleWorks 6 still works, runs, and is quite enough for three households I know.

Of course, I think it's a pretty good office suite, for 1997.

Regardless of my opinion, it's a fully-functional (WP, spreadsheet, database, presentations) native (for OS X even) office suite.

    >>So nobody's bothered correcting the blatant error that a minute's research with google would tell you.

    Except you... :-)

It's my experience that you watch/care for wikipedia articles that interest you. For instance, I like Jazz Music from the 1930s to the 1960s. Most of my watchlist is for musicians of that era. So, if somebody makes a change to Chick Webb I'm going to see it in a day or so. If it appears to be contrary to my knowledge, I do some research. I might even check the contributions of the poster to see if s/he's a crank or a vandal.

As wikipedia gets more popular, there will be more eyeballs to catch the problems. There might not be as many eyeballs for 'artex' as needed, but it's an incremental process.

    6) First aid kit (for splinters, blisters, cuts)
    7) Neosporin or some other anti-bacterial cream
    8) Allergy tablets (I always get f*cked up in a new climate)
    9) Comfortable shoes and lots of clean socks
    10) Something to while away downtime. I suggest the "Su Doku for Dummies" book. Hours of puzzle-solving fun and no electricity needed.

Be prepared to rough it. Don't expect a king-sized bed at the Omni. I just got to Texas today and I'm in a decent hotel room, but tomorrow I don't have a place to stay. I hope the back seat of the car is comfortable...

    Done.

I mean, if your domain name is important enough that you will miss it when it's gone, you shouldn't be leaving it in the hands of anybody else.

If Patrick Fitzgerald says that Rove didn't do anything illegal, I'll believe him.

Fitzgerald might be a Republican, but he's a smart, honest, law-and-order Republican. He's a far more competent prosecutor than Ken Starr ever was.

  16. Nepotism is Bull on Googling for CIA Agents · · Score: 1

Read today's Sidney Blumenthal article at Salon.com. Cheney tasked the CIA, people who knew Wilson's background asked his wife if he would be interested. She probably broached the subject with him, but she didn't 'authorize' him.

Again, you can believe the spin, or you can determine the facts. Fortunately, Patrick Fitzgerald is concentrating on the facts.

  17. Consider this... on Googling for CIA Agents · · Score: 2, Insightful

The reason why there is a special prosecutor is because the CIA asked the justice department to investigate the alleged violation. Atty General John Ashcroft took a look at the allegations and decided that is was worth investigating. It was Ashcroft that assigned Fitzgerald as the special prosecutor.

Pundits and Politicos can argue over whether she was a NOC or not, but the CIA apparently thought a violation occurred, and I trust they would know her status.

I looked at the Pepper Pad. Ho-hum. It's got a 20-gig harddrive, it has yesterday's WiFi (b not g) and USB (1.0 not 2.0), a Blackberry keyboard, and it runs some oddball version of Linux.

For a $200 more, you can get a G4 iBook.

  19. Records on Archiving Digital History at the NARA · · Score: 2, Informative

NARA makes a distinction between a document and a record. Any old piece of paper or email is a document, but a record is something which shows how the US government did business.

For example, the email to my supervisor asking when I can take a week's vacation isn't a record. The leave request form I get him to sign is a record. An email about lunch plans: not a record. An email to a coworker about a grant application probably is.

Besides obvious records (eg: financial and legal records), there are many documents that may or may not be records. For the most part, it's up to each program to decide which documents are records and archive them appropriately.

You know you're sitting in a room of "very important bureaucrats" because you see them checking their email during meetings.

The ostensible reason they're so popular is during 9/11, cellphones didn't work, but Blackberries worked fine.

OTOH: My biggest problem with using a webapp for notetaking is a lack of control with the editor. You know, plain text can be viewed in a browser, so I suppose you could just use Emacs or vim or notepad. But then you don't get fancy formatting options...

  25. It's Hawt on Agile Web Development with Ruby on Rails · · Score: 0

Some very interesting websites (Basecamp for one) have sprung up from using Rails. Many people designing web applications see Rails as a powerful framework for website development.

However, there's not a lot of good Rails documentation out there yet. This book is highly anticipated and the distribution model (Beta now, Final later) is also unusual.

Frankly, I think Rails is Ruby's 'killer app'. I actually think that Ruby could swap spaces with Python in popularity.

    So some attention is deserved.

But like Napoleon said: "Never ascribe to malice, that which can be explained by incompetence." Sometimes, to paraphrase Gertrude Stein: "A Dup is a dup is a dup."
