Leave the government out of it. This is how it should be. We currently have a telecommunication industry based on an outdated government monopoly system. Do you think AT&T has been helpful in innovation? I don't think so... Getting the government involved further would only ruin us for more years to come.
The ONLY viable way, and the BEST way is to sit on it, until technology has caught up to the point where private enterprises can outcompete the telcos. It's natural, but more importantly, it's INEVITABLE!
Having the telcos set the bar is also a good thing, because then and ONLY then will we ensure only something truly superior will take its place, not some inferior/sub-par solution subsidized by the government.
Whenever you hail a cab, do NOT fall asleep, unless you wanna be overcharged. These guys know most customers aren't total idiots, so they refrain from driving you in circles.
However, if you happen to be drunk or sleepy and take a nap, it lowers their inhibitions and they're more likely to cheat you. I know because I've had this happen a couple of times. What usually costs $20 ended up costing about $30. I was asleep so about the only thing I could do was complain, pay, and leave.
I see lots of anti-outsourcing comments on here, saying how it's a race to the bottom, etc etc etc.
Do you care about the world, or only your own little corner of the world? If you care about the world and long term benefits, you should encourage global trade and outsourcing.
Why? Take a look at the Invisible Hand theroy in Adam Smith's 'Wealth of Nations' book.
Yes it's true. Corporations operate on pure greed. What they are doing is leveraging the global labor arbitrage, and going around investing in third-world countries that nobody cares about. This in turn increases infrastructure, wealth, education, and knowledge about that country, which fast-tracks it to modern-world standards.
It also forces OUR OWN COUNTRIES to be more competitive. If programming is now outsourced, then our own workers must become even more competitive than before (as opposed to standing still and stagnating). Either we move up, or we become irrelevent. The climb up the value chain is endless. We are not all just grunt workers. There's a whole different world once you climb into management.
So yes, in the short-term there might not appear to be many SELFISH benefits, but in the long-term, everyone in the world is better off, which also means they will have more spending power for OUR GOODS. As a result of increase competition as well as a larger labor market, innovation improves much faster. 6 billion people fighting for innovation is better than 300 million doing it.
In summary, here are the benefits:
- End world hunger: countries and people rise up in spending power, and people are able to feed themselves. you DO care about ending world hunger, and not just how many rolexes you can buy right? - World Peace: increase trade/communication, and you vastly decrease hostilities, misunderstandings, and drastically increase the cost of war. - More Wealth For Everyone: as people in third-world countries rise up, their spending powers increase, and thus are able to buy OUR goods.
Stop thinking pro-protectionist. Time has proven again yet again yet again that it does NOT work. Do you think the world is better off today, or yesterday when most countries were closed off to the world?
Are you friggin out of your mind? There's a HUGE difference at play here, and you are benefitting from it right here on Slashdot every day.
Here we are allowed to disagree, be critical of, and demonstrate. In China you cannot say anything the government doesn't allow you to say, PERIOD.
Look at the masses of AMERICANS who hate Bush and Cheney. Americans openly criticise them, without any fear of being locked up or shot. You tell your Russian model girlfriend to go back to Russia and say something bad about Putin to see what happens to her and her family.
Go head, visit China and spit on Mao's picture and see what happens.
There's a HUGE difference between having the freedom to THINK FOR YOURSELF, as opposed to having your thinking done FOR you. Do you realize how corrupt China is, from the inside out? Why is this so? Because there is NO freedom of speech.
I've lived in China. Once you get to know the people, almost everyone is disallusioned and utterly disgusted with their government. They know of all the corrupt things that go on via the "guanxi" system. What can they do about it? Zilch, unless they wanna get shot or jailed.
THAT is the difference. In the free world (not just the U.S. btw), we are allowed to steer the path to our own destiny. In countries like China, you are nothing more than a peon, and the goverenment officials who hold all of the power get to do whatever they please and there's not a damn thing you can do about it.
Note, I love Chinese people. It's the corrupt government that I can't stand.
You'd think that someone who's familiar with the Chinese currency has probably lived there. Logic would tell you that people who go out of their way to go and live in another country would hardly be considered racist toward the host country.
Of course stacking is done by the same denominations. Howevere, it's really easy for money to get lost in the wallet when I don't have time to sit down and sort my money (say if I'm in a rush or in a store).
When there's a small bill hiding behind two large ones in my wallet, it becomes really easy for the small bill to slip out or fall out when I am trying to get the large one. Plus it's hard to find the small bills hiding behind the large ones.
The most annoying thing about my computer is that stupid Microsoft key. It's placed at such an inconsiderate place. While doing anything, an accidental press of that key will interrupt everything I'm doing and the damn Start menu would pop up.
Every get interrupted while playing a game? You know what I'm talking about.
I'm so tempted to just remove that key physically. Yes I know, Linux.... but I can't use that on my office PC.
Is there any way to disable that M$ key or move map it to another key instead? Having it go to the "Scroll Lock" key would be nice. Out of the way, can be used if needed.
This is one of the reasons I don't join any of the popular social networking sites, because they're all about putting every piece of information out in public. Who my friends are, what comments they've left me, etc. It's fun when you're just goofing around, but when you have actual friends and groups of friends you'd like to keep quiet, this doesn't work anymore.
vBuddy.com is the only one I'd visit, because they actually let you group your friends into separate groups, and assign permissions to what they can see and do.
Let's just require everyone to get a license before being allowed to go online. And once you get this license you are financially liable for any damagers caused, whether inadvertently or not, by your direct/indirect actions. These actions would include things like getting your computer hacked and becoming part of a botnet, not cleaning up trojans on your computer, allowing your PC to become an infectious node, constantly falling victim to scams, phishes, etc.
If there's one type of person worse than the black hats, it's these incompetent users who not only don't know, but actively REFUSE to care. They are the enablers.
Ron, stop playing WoW and get back to your campaigning!
I thought idiots like you have already moved on to Digg. I guess not.
Big brother is coming, and we're all cheering for it...

It not easy being green...
It's funny how you can owe anybody money without fear of prison time, except Uncle Sam.
Well then, how about we audit the damn U.S. government and hold THEM criminally liable for wasting our tax dollars?
This isn't even news anymore. The whole sordid saga of sex.com was reported on wired.com at least 5 years ago! Why is this making the rounds now?
I see lots of anti-outsourcing comments on here, saying how it's a race to the bottom, etc etc etc.

I try, and am allowed to try, via my guaranteed freedoms.

No kidding.

Well excuse me if you're so hyper-sensitive. I mention China because I have lived there. I've never been to Europe so I wouldn't know about the Euro.
Don't do what China does and start offering money in different sizes. It's really annoying to use, and hard to stack.
Your girlfriend's name contains 5 letters. Just count them with your left hand.
Send me my check thanks.
Wallop? Probably better to term if Flop, because that's exactly what's going to happen.
M$, the Johnny-Come-Lately to every single party... but tries to cheat its way out by bundling through its monopoly.
I know this was a sarcastic post most likely, but while you are free falling, you are physically experiencing zero gravity.

So I click the link to try it out. I log in, then right away get this message:

Wow a woman on Slashdot! They really DO exist!
:p
J/K. I think your post is very informative. Ok pic please.
You're on Slashdot. You don't have a girlfriend. It's ok. We don't really care either. :p
