  1. Re:I know the feeling. on Surviving Outsourcing? · · Score: 2, Informative

    Same here.

Our IT department was outsourced to HP several years ago. At the time I was glad I was not in the IT department, although I work mostly with IT things.

In the meanwhile my view has changed completely:
    - the people who were outsourced have safe jobs at HP. Some changed to better jobs inside HP, others are still doing the same job.
    - My own company has started moving everything offshore and laying off more and more people. No chance of any career or promotion any more.
    - The people who stayed are now fighting for their jobs every day, while the people who were outsourced have safe jobs and can even move to other parts of HP.

If you are asking for advice:
    - Don't Panic
    - keep your CV up to date (this is always good)
    - see what HP offers to you. Usually they pay the same, but raises and promotions may be handled differently.
    - Quickly Switch to HP mentally: you should now do what is best for HP, not what is best for your old company.
    - look for a career at HP: they will probably offer better opportunities than your current employer.

  2. Basic Statistics on Mac OS X Switcher Stories · · Score: 1

This is a joke - right?

You pose a question to a number of people you have no knowledge about, get 15 answers and write an article about this?

Assume that from all the suscribers only 5 were pure windows users and 1000 use other systems. Then 100% of the windows users switched but only 1% or so of the others.

Aktually if you assume that the standard deviation is the root of the measured number then you have:

    Windows users: 5 +/- 2.2
    Others : 10 +/- 3.1
These numbers agree within statistical limits!

So this may be worth thinking about but the numbers are completely worthless.

  3. Sun Balde Keyboard on A Selective History Of The Keyboard · · Score: 1

Most of the newer Keyboards are merely crap. Not heavy enough, too small space-bars, drop them on the floor and they are broken...

Still not all of them suck:
I got my hands on a brand-new SunBlade machine at work. The Keyboard has at least as good feel as my favourite 15-year old Cherry Keyboard at home. Nice, heavy case, some (but not too many) extra keys on the left hand side (and these are keys, not some small rubber buttons...)
    And it has USB too...

  4. Re:responsibility on MS Chief Security Officer to work for White House · · Score: 1

The problem is that if M$ ex-managers get into management of other companies, they push
M$ products. And then leave quickly before the company finds out how bad the software actually is.

That way we got an Exchange system which looses
mails and where transfer from/to UNIX and the internet sometimes takes up to 5 hours :-(

So guess what the whitehouse will use for safe
    software next year.

But on the good side, this gets you access to top secret documents.

  5. Re:I Hate to say it, but a MS EXchange Server on Outsourcing Email For An Entire Domain? · · Score: 1
Beware if you use Exchange with a large number of users and interface it with other Mail servers.

Exchange alone works in small scale, but our Exchange system tends to have huge mail delays (up to several hours) when the mails are delivered through other servers.

Also sometimes mails are simply lost.

I used to get worried if a mail took more than say 30 seconds across the atlantic and back using UNIX and VMS. With Exchange a 30 minutes delay happens every once in a while.

This may be true for you. But most people do not even KNOW they have a choice. If you buy a computer you are not asked "What OS would you like to have ?". You just get Windows (And opften have to pay for it, even if you do not want it).

I would be happy if there was a ruling or law or wathever stating that the OS and the computer must be sold separately. THEN people would think about which functionality they want and about the price and choose what is best for them.
