Funny, my BSD dedicated server was recently hacked and was spamming. It was hacked through a php/mysql exploit through a poorly written script a customer was using.

Many DDOS attacks are often carried out by Linux boxes as well, the .com I worked at had it happen to their server. Stop blaming Windows for the problems of the world. Besides if Windows did not exist, you would just have to blame something else. The most likely candidate would be Linux.

I would almost bet that your Linux or Mac box has no anti-virus protection on it, so how does that make you any better?

Using a distro closer in age would make for better results as far as hardware goes.

You hit the nail on the head.

You need some frontline defense, with that, one person can easily manage this network with no problems and people will be happy with what service they are getting.

Some people will think this will waste of time, mention that if a person in the office eliminates 80% of the problems within 5 minutes, saving them time waiting for you, productivity will go up, rather than down.

Done properly, you will not even need to be in the office full time.

With a system like this in place, one person can easily mintain a network 2-3 times as large.

    Linux people...
Please stop listening to Linux users to find out the problems you have with overtaking the desktop market. Start listening to those wanting to convert but failed. Listening to those who succeeded will not tell you what is wrong. It worked for them! They are not your target.

Take a look back at the posts here, you will see what I mean. You can easily tell who is running what in many cases.

Linux users, get off your high horse and listen to what Windows users are telling you.

Oh, one other thing, when a noob asks a question, stop replying with use the search, odds are they did, and found 5000 posts of people saying use the search or RTFM. You are not helping. Also, instead of giving up on them after the 3rd question, do NOT tell them to just switch to OSX.

    You guys make terrible salesmen.

I am tired of you guys telling me how great things are for you. They are not. Your install system is a joke. Your help system is a joke. You have not made any progression towards STANDARDS in years. Does everything on KDE run in Gnome? How about reverse? And why in the hell are you still developing drivers for hardware discontinued 3 years ago!

Not tryingto sound like a jerk, but just becaue you are carefull where you go, no longer protects you.

I see people with that attitude daily when I come by to clean the stuff out that they catch. I can garantee I can find spyware, adware and possibly a virus or trojan on your system. Even Bill Gates has to run Ad-Aware (it was in an interview someplace).

If you use AIM or email, or anything that connects to anyone or thing, you are at risk.

To think your exempt is ignorant. I have seen virii in websites, many others are embedding spyware into websites that are trusted, and who knows if they were not hacked, or if your buddy who you trust did not pick something up.

Windows is not safe on its own, and your a fool to think otherwise. Firewall or not. If Port 80 is open, your at risk. If your connected, your at risk.

  13. Somethings to rememebr on How Will Subscription-Ware Affect OEMs? · · Score: 1

First off, there is no guaranty of upgrades, and if they do put it in writing, who is to say it would be necessary every time it was mandated? You cannot win that fight. On top of that, why should they update, they are going to get your money either way! What will this do to the Linux community.. It may be a boon at first but later it will kill it. Why? Think about what it requires for you to convert now, if you have a new system with a restore disk. If something goes wrong, you lose everything when you restore. So many people with OEM systems are afraid to try it, or get stuck with having to go buy ANOTHER copy of Windows, or "borrow" a copy. With a subscription service, it will become nearly impossible to try an alternative OS. What if they decide you cannot modify your boot sector according to the contract? Or if one of the changes alters your boot sector. It can happen, and probably would. Lastly, are you all forgetting M$ cannot make a secure system to save its life!!! Now, they expect to host all your programs, files, and personal information of 90% of the computers in the world.. NO THANKS!!! Not only can their servers not handle the load (by far), they do not have good enough security, and net connections are not good enough. No business is going to be happy if they cannot even take appointments due to a bad connection. It's a lawsuit waiting to happen. I do not think M$ can pull this off and if they do not change their plan soon, I think we will not ever see a DOJ vs. M$ decision because there will not be any M$. One last thing.. What happens when they decide your P4 1400 is no longer strong enough to run the latest updates? Will it be an option to continue without the update? This sounds like highway robbery to me. They control when you upgrade, how you upgrade, and they also control what you can do with your hardware and software. On top of that, once they have you on their system, they can charge what they want. Monopoly or not, they are only a "subscription service" you can always quit! You will not have a PC to use, but you can always quit, we will reconnect you for a $500 reconnect fee.
