Having to actually get off your arse and go to a polling place to cast your vote is A Good Thing. It makes sure only the truly motivated actually vote.
The problem I see with being nice to users, or even pretending to be nice, is that they'll just feel free to call again. If I am as unhelpful and un-nice as possible, then they'll think twice before calling me again.
Ya see, this argument isn't about giving all products a fair opportunity for success. This is, to use your Affirmative Action argument, about demanding that Microsoft give up a share of its success to others who have not necessarily earned it.
The point is that Microsoft didn't earn its success; it cheated to get it. Its not fair to cheat to get ahead, and then claim that everybody has to play fair.
Suppose you fly over manhattan with your gps media receiver on. Aren't you going to get a massive overload of data as you pass through so many message locations?
Never underestimate the appeal of a nice email-address. You don't want to print a google search url onto your business card, do you?
This is true now, but probably won't be for long. I foresee "swipe-able" business cards that read your info right into the contact list, including your not-human-readable email address.

Just because win2K == NT5.0 doesn't mean that Win2K isn't more mature than NT4.
Because it is "just a version update" doesn't mean that it hasn't matured, i.e., is more stable and has more features.
However, this is off topic.
I do think that it is a shame that solaris will no longer be available, as I was hoping to download it for one of my old machines. Now I'll have to convince my wife we need a Sparc...
But what I'd also like to see is older versions being made free (as in beer) after a specfied time.
I agree with you here. I love Borland for releasing their old Turbo C and Pascal environments.
But with some software, such as the anti-virus software mentioned in the article, the old versions aren't really useful. If they released the source maybe, but that's pretty unlikely.
Micros~1 can be stopped, but we all have to work together and resist!
Passport is essential to the Micros~1 plan for world domination. We can stop it by refusing to participate.
This thing scares me, really. How long will it be before every Windows user is required to have a Passport account before they can log into their workstation?
I telecommute as well, but 2 of my telecommuting colleagues are in the same area, so we get together for lunch once a week. Usually the conversation revolves around online gaming as opposed to work stuff.
I'm not a fanatic, pure-science or pure-religion, but...
Science may only be asking "How", but many religions address the "how" as well, and many religious people perceive the two as being in conflict.
This isn't the problem now that is has been in the past, ie no one is going to be executed for promulgating such "heresy". But some people still would like to see science suppressed.

Dang, Katz, you have no clue.
There's not one site you mention as a previous "heart of the Net" that I've ever been to, and I've been on the net for 10 years.
There is no heart on the internet. There are many, many nodes, and people visit different ones based on their needs and wants.
I much prefer reading off of dead trees, as opposed to the CRT.

So how's this sampling going to affect the census??

BillG, just for fun?

Resist, I say! Don't sign up for Passport!

... would not require a new moon program
Well, I for one would like to see any excuse used to start a new moon program.
I keep waiting for the moon base from Space 1999 to become reality.
Well, the problem is with the C runtime library, isn't it? Let's lobby ISO to amend the standard to exclude strcpy and all other unsafe functions.
Ooh, you know where I can get a sandcrawler?? Post a link!!
Actually, the installation was pretty easy. There's only about 10 required packages to get.
In fact, I had an easier time ftp'ing manually than I did with the Cygwin installer.
I suppose that could be because the first 6 mirrors I tried with the cygwin installer were unavailable.
