Warning - some will consider this flamebait, but I'm posting under my own name anyway. This is not intended as flamebait and is either objective and verifiable fact or my personal opinion.
Until 3 years ago, I was a lifelong resident of Massachusetts. Kerry was my senator for 16 years. I cannot remember a single thing he did for the residents of Massachusetts. In fact, my memories of Kerry are exclusively linked to one or another of his political campaigns.
I cannot tell you what Kerry stands for or what he is against. I cannot tell you if he has any sincerely-held beliefs at all. I do believe he feels very strongly about being elected and reelected to political positions.
I voted for Bush in the last election. Now I have the misfortune of living in swing-state Ohio where I am inundated with political ads. It is SO BAD that I could not even have a family party this past weekend without having it interrupted by someone out politicking door-to-door. I could not believe my ears when I took a recent business trip to New York City and heard a commercial by the Ohio Democratic Party soliciting contributions so it could run more ads in Ohio, specifically Cleveland! That is simply outrageous.
I hate a lot of things that have happened in this country since the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11. Although I hate the attacks themselves, it annoys me that anyone who sufered or died in that attack is proclaimed as a "hero." The people who were killed were VICTIMS of MURDERERS. Heros (like the firefighters and police that day) are people who make a choice to act. Most of the victims never had an opportunity to choose. If the mis-labeling were the extent of things, I would be silent now. However, many have changed the label from victim to hero and then used the memory of "heroes" for their own ends. THAT IRKS THE HELL OUT OF ME.
What are those ends? Mostly monetary gain. Also, there is a fair share of power-brokering. How many pieces of legislation (especially pork-barrel appropriations bills) now are promoted as necessary for national security? In the meantime, federal spending is up, costs are up, unemployment is up, freedoms are down.
When Bush signs legislation that erodes fundamental Constitutional Rights like the PATRIOT Act, I get irked as well. Irked to the point of even calling my Congressional Representatives and letting my opinions be known. Sometimes I even wish there was someone else running things who would stop this erosion. Unfortunately, the John Kerry I am used to is not that person.
I think Kerry would make things even worse by increasing federal spending more and raising taxes. Any amount of dislike I have for an incumbent is usually not enough for me to vote for an opponent. Kerry simply has never shown me any reason to be FOR him. At least I know what Bush is likely to do and when it comes to those things I care about, I feel like there is a better alternative in expressing my sentiments about those issues rather than replacing Bush with someone I consider to be a wild card.
Kerry had almost 20 years to show me something. I doubt I would find that something if he had 4 more years in Washington.
Well put. Consider this, however: Partisan politics have become so distasteful to so many that people of true ability and integrity simply do not want to expose themselves to the type of scrutiny and character asassination that now seems to be simply part of running for office. Therefore, the people who are most able to effectively lead and truly do good things to help the United States realize its fullest potential will not be in those positions because they do not want to endure the processes to get elected.
It has been said you are better with the devil you know versus the devil you do not know. I've lived in the US with Bush for 4 years and I lived in Massachusetts with Kerry for about 16 years. I feel like I know both devils and I know which one I am going to pick - the devil I know. Why? Because unfortunately my ballot choices, if my vote is actually going to be effective for a major candidate, effectively force me to choose the lesser of 2 evils. I don't like it, but in this election at least there will not be real change.
In my humble opinion formed mostly from my experience as an almost life-long resident of Massachusetts, the good Senator Kerry is completely serious - until the election is over. Then he is serious about something else. The something else usually is getting re-elected.
If I find out you have Windows in your vehicle, consider me immediately removed from your potential target market. And I will find out. I'll even have the dealer warrant to me that the car is 100% Windows free if I have to. You'd be AMAZED at the kinds of things dealerships will give you a warranty for when a salesperson knows you are a serious buyer and you are getting up to leave the dealership.
If no one will do that, I'll drive my 2000 Honda until 2040 when I'll but a non-Windows flying car with full autopilot and a voice-command interface. My last Honda went 262,000 miles without Windows - I'll bet by current Honda can triple that (at least).
More than a third of the 493 PC users surveyed by the nonprofit National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) said they had a greater chance of winning the lottery or being struck by lightning than of being hit by malicious code.
That must be the one-third of users in the survey who use Mac OS X or Linux or FreeBSD.
Unfortunately, grandfather is no longer around to file the lawsuit.
As next-of-kin, you could file a wrongful death action on his behalf. I think that your real problem would be getting personal jurisdiction over the Grim Reaper. I mean, who knows where he will be at any time to serve him with a summons?
Because in my legal opinion, such disclaimers are worthless. I have posted on here with such disclaimers where I felt I was giving a legal analysis that was so specific to a circumstance that I felt someone may reasonably rely on my analysis for legal advice unless I made that disclaimer.
As a general rule, any legal information I provide on Slashdot is general in nature and is not "advice" that someone could reasonably rely upon to solve a legal problem. I usually make comments on what the state of the law is, policies that drive the law or are affacted by it, or what I see as the general legal context surrounding a problem. I think it would be completely ridiculous for someone to assert that I am their lawyer because they read my post on Slashdot.
No you're not. Or at least, if you are, you're a very bad one.
Yes, I am. Actually, I am an EXCELLENT lawyer. Would you like me to sue you for defamation to prove it? Lay off comments like this. It is uncalled-for and completely baseless.
Actually, no I am not. Feel free to contact me through Slashdot and I am happy to provide copies of my law licenses. I am admitted in 2 states, before 2 federal trial courts and 1 federal Court of Appeals, and registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. I use the name "Compulawyer" when posting because I post here to contribute to Slashdot and hopefully provide some useful commentary. I am not here looking for clients or to advertise my services. I have never accepted a client representation from anything I have done in connection with Slashdot.
I'm fairly certain that nothing in a legal release for a LAN party would involve inalienable rights. But you can even waive basic rights granted by the Constitution - you can consent to have your home searched by the police, you can agree not to speak on certain topics as a condition of receiving a security clearance. The Bill of Rights protects individuals from GOVERNMENTAL action. It does not have any effect on relationships between private parties where the gov't is not involved.
For the rest of us, we're stuck with the legal principle that someone cannot sign away rights that are granted by law.
This is completely incorrect. People can and do sign away rights every day. If they didn't, no one would ever be able to settle a lawsuit or plea bargain in a criminal trial.
I am a lawyer, and my opinion is that you are confusing the concept of the general ability to either consent to someting that would otherwise be illegal and/or release someone in advance of any legal liability with the countervailing concept that the law will not allow you to consent to some types of legal wrongs.
The classic example is battery. Battery is the unconsented-to harmful or inappropriate touching of another. Sporting contest participants are held to have consented to certain types of touching even though that touching may do physical harm (e.g., being tackled in a football game). However, the law will not allow you to consent to a touching that is likely or certain to cause death.
In my humble legal opinion, a properly drafted, clearly worded release would be completely appropriate for a LAN party.
I also kid you not, but there is even an annual (as of this year) Duck Tape festival. It was the same weekend as Father's Day. Conspiracy Thoerists: Coincidence? I think not!
Hey, what do you want from a place 20 minutes west of Cleveland? It's not like there is a hell of a lot to do in the city...
It was a thought-out reply, but also a joke. I guess thought-out jokes just aren't funny. Then again, yours may have been a sarcastic joke, but I didn't notice the text included between the

Your summary is eminently fair and accurately captures my feelings.

When the Windows-integrated cruise control bug pops up, I'll be surrounded by screams .
See? Now I can't stop making puns. My co-workers will hate me for the rest of the day.
Actually, if it does have Windows, the only screen will be the Blue Screen of Death.

Picture the type with an electret mike that clips to the lapel with a wire to the Tx/Rx box - not the handheld type.

Apparently, someone else in this thread recognizes that as well.
Sorry. I don't have enough information regarding the scope of the release and that is work product that I would normally charge for.

Oh, Estonia ... I was thinking Elbonia. Sorry - my bad.
This is not true. In the United States, after disclosing an invention publically, you have ONE YEAR within which to file a patent application.
