Microsoft has done many things that were illegal.
The judge did not look at things closely enough.
my view point is this:
if m$ had built a better product,
and thus gained dominance in the market, it
would be a negative thing, but tolerable.
They did for a while (who among us can deny
that at one time, he helped bring computers
to the lay person). But once they approached
dominance, they introduced an element of
sloppiness to their work (rem win95 v1? heh)
Then they used their abilities to drive other
products (netscape) under (i believe that it
would have fallen if not for aol... akk...)
and (esp at the time) ie was nowhere near
as good as netscape. m$ products are 2nd
rate, and thus attained their position
through lies, undercutting the opposition,
and all of the other things the corps do to
each other. (of course (w netscape / ie all
these flashy graphx are a waste of
bandwidth anyway;)
Well, anyway, m$ cry of foul is ridiculous,
however, every big business tries to do the same.
And I personally hope that the other end
never becomes mainstream. Why? because I think
that power corrupts. I think that if (for
example) linux became dominant, the motivation
for innovation and excellence would be gone.
I think that the underdog will always be better
product, because they are busy fighting for the
top. The top will always be busy trying to
undermine the underdog that it perceives as a
threat.
But did he make the best one? Did others
improve upon the idea, thus creating a
superior cotton gin. Did this benefit
the cotton industry, the textile industry,
and the nation as a whole? Was he even
capable of creating enough cotton gins
to satisfy the demand.
Should we be paying the Egyptians for
their use of paper?
How about giving the Romans (or their
descendents aka Italians) credit for
creating a prototype
for our modern government?
Do we pay the Chinese for their invention
of gunpowder?
Did Eli use metal that was refined out of
rocks? did he invent that method? what
carpentry techniques did he use? Did he
use the English language to communicate
(which has borrowed words and syntax from
a plethora of sources)

Disclaimer: not a historian. probably totally
inacurate. but you get the idea.
The whole motivation of laws these days
seems to reside wholly in the amount of
cash it can produce. Not justice, or
any noble notions like that. Sometimes
I realize that I am not cynical enough.
This is one of those times.

Did i mention that he was a crazy, paranoid,

the nuclear weapons are launched?

GGenerally, I tend to buy things that are not
advertised. The more I see an ad, the more
irritated I become, and the less likely I am
to buy a given product. Commercialism has driven
me to become an anti-consumer.
I have some reasons for this. The ads are
redundant, and many of them are aimed at
the 'typical' person. And they irritate me
a little bit. Say, for the sake of argument,
you see an ad several thousand times and it
irritates you a little bit the first time.
How do you feel about it the hundredth time,
or the thousandth time?
Well to the point. I occasionally click on
a banner that is not to blaring, is correctly
demographed (is that a word?), is interesting,
and has not been overly done. If this system
can cut down on the redundant ads, and make
them more demographically appropriate, I am
all for them. (being a realist, and knowing that
commercialism is here to stay, i will settle for
trying to improve the quality)

The restrictive laws are indicitive of a
conservative environment. I believe that
the reason that ppl dont go there is the
lack of a liberal environment.
What a sad life, just because you are married,
and father two, it does not mean that you
have to be into (football) and (church) and
not go out anymore, or have a social life
that consists of nightclubs, hiking,
biking, or camping. And, why is religion
linked with being a father, or being married?
And why do you not mention women? It is
perhaps less attractive for a woman to have
a carreer in a conservative environment as
a man. (for obvious reasons)
The point of this, is that programmers and
engineers tend to have an atypical lifestyle
compared to most careers. For instance, there
are a higher number of atheists in their mix.
There is a higher number of liberals in the mix.
Thus many engineers do not fall into the
football watching, god fearing, wife
beating, American stereotype. I certainly do not.
And thus, a place that offers a conservative
environment is not one that I will live in.
