If YOU are not in charge of, or working in the IT dept, what gives you the privilage to bypass/alter the security that was approved by YOUR BOSS?
To often, self proclaimed experts in the office staff think they know more then the experts that are in the IT dept, and when the viruses and trojans pop up in the network, the "EXPERT" is no where to be found (the "expert" caused the security breach by breaking the rules)
Now we can expect the script kiddy zeelots to increase our VoIP cost.
Isn't this the sort of thing that hurts the public opinion of linux??? That it is used for illegal activity (virus writers, hackers, now pheakers...).
Some of the problems society has, is dealing with things that have no benifit, and only cause harm to others. Why do programers create harmful tools and release them to the public with instructions of how to abuse them.
well said. The tax write off alone of the service is worth having the broadband. You just need to get something from the employer that says you have to have remote access ability incase the taxman wants to questine it (rare nowdays, but I had to do it for years with the ISDN).
I actualy do this very thing with a client. I also have anoth client that runs 2-4 servers per case, using VM-Ware, but running on w2ksvr. All my clients use Sonicwall TZ series firewalls (and I firmly believe that all business should have a firewall if they use the internet)
Setting rules and security on the network is only part of the task. The social aspects of data theft or mis-use has to be handled with as much attention. Now...enforcing the security becomes moot if they allow devices that can carry data outside, inside the building...
(paper can carry data too, and is a known sorce of data theft, just as the dumpster divers...)
the register is not a serious news site, incase you havent noticed, they have a tendency to play the part of the ALARMIST and make up what they have to, to get people to read their site. Using their site as a source for real news is like reading only the republicans/democrats released news, and taking it as the truth during an election.
if the country isnt prepared to handle and enforce laws to prevent the illegal use of a technology, then the rest of the world has a right to NOT allow that technology to be used against them...if it means blocking all traffic from a country, so be it, it is their own fault, not ours. We dont allow children to use the internet unsupervised (I would hope people do this), and some countries need to be treated like children least they cause harm to others or themselves.
No matter what MS does, the linux trolls of slashdot will try to make it a bad thing...
If MS was to drop all the old code, and release a surprise distro of linux, that had none of the bugs and problems that currently haunt linux now (easy to install and cfg, with a working application installer), then slashdot would say something slanted against ms, and bash linux....such is the fate of those that ride the hate bandwagons out of ignorence
try to RTFM on the OS and learn how to cfg it. If that seems silly, then stop reading the man pages and how-to's of linux, and STFU about the subject (lets see how well people can work with linux without instructions).
If slashdot hate mongers had pulled their heads from their rectums, they could have read up and noticed that MS has a patch being released today to fix this hole.
How long did it take the linux devs to correct the backdoor built into the old kernels????
Get off the "I hate Microsoft" bandwagon long enough to actualy read up on the problem, from sources not on your hatewagon, and RTFM on how to secure the OS....or is that a task soley used for securing linux?
I get a kick out of slashdots hate group, they show just how a group SHOULDN'T act to achieve a goal.
I use this site as an instructional aid in a few classes, pointing out how scare tactics, FUD, and HATE speech achieve nothing more then giving people the impression that linux is a toy for immature little kids, not ready for the "grownup's" world.
People like you are why laws with good intent are reduced to meaningless chicken scratch on paper.
Obvious intent vs. anal nitpickers and the anal side wins each time, why?? Because the anals will continue to find some means to disassemble the sentences, without having any actual point concerning the ACTUAL argument.
Lawyers were intended to argue right from wrong, but toss in a little greed, and their purpose turns into analysis of sentences and their ability to get a murderer off due to an "i" not being dotted, then it becomes the standard mentality of their job, ignore truth and increase personal income.
If the world wants real justice to succeed, the "lawyers" with a tendency to twist truth into a mesh of worthless words, should be ELIMINATED. Laws are about FACTS, not how many "i's" got dotted, which "t" wasn't crossed, not differentiating between "copy" and "steal" of intellectual properties.
By recording the movie in the theater he was STEALING a COPY of the film. How freaking hard is that to understand???
Next time you are done wrong by another, and try to enact some "legal" recourse, I can only hope that the opposing side gives you a taste of the WRONG aspect of how a lawyer should behave during the process of litigation, and reduces your argument to a pile of poo...then slaps you with the bill for his services since you lost the "game"...
" If you want someone to whom to complain about the spread of worms, you might want to direct your anger at the blameworthy."
Sorry but that is pure FUD!
The blame falls on the writers of the worms, viruses, and other malware!
Your logic to the issue is to blame the makers of guns for all murders, and toss the bullet makers into jail too. Yaaaa lets not blame the criminal that picked up the gun, decided to use it to kill, and pulled the trigger...
If they hired some nerds that have a CLUE(tm) this wouldn't be needed.

If software has to have zero flaws and avenues for attack to be distributed, Linux should be removed from distribution NOW (errata pages all over the web showing the holes...). Ohhhhh, but people expect a few flaws here and there, since the os is always being revamped, and we all know MS has done nothing to revamp their OS...
MS is doing a reasonable job in support, and patching, all while producing an OS the casual user can use after minimal training.
Th firing squad referrence was a metaphor BTW, but the laws do need to take harsh action on the mal-ware writers. What better place to hit them then in the wallet, such as seizing all assets, property and bank accounts, since they could have purchased them from proceeds of their crimes.
your assumbtion that the fault is MS's is pure BULLSHIT.
Do we blame Colt for the ppl the companies guns have killed, do we blame the company that made the bullets, no, we blame the person that pulled the trigger...
When will/. and the linux trolls on the "i hate ms" bandwagon cease the propaganda and place the blame on the writers of the viruses, trojans, backdoors, and other mal-ware???
By having any virus or avenue of attack, any os is a POS collection of code, by/. standards (this includes Linux, or can we assume the errata pages are only there as a joke...).
sooooo, the blame isn't with the people that wrote the virus, nor is it with the people that hacked the high level site, it rest soley on the OS creater...
Should the virus writers and hackers be found to be using Linux to do their dirty work, we can blame Linux as the root cause of the issue, and have it declared a terrorist tool and banned from the USA...
Extreme narrow minded views and opinions are easy to create, it takes wisdom and insite to relize the problem isnt the software, it is the attention starved childish hackers and virus writers that have yet to be placed in front of a firing squad as an example of what will happen to their kind when caught.
..could it have been a case of, they had to work their real jobs so they could afford the basics of life, before they could spend spare time on a risky venture in writting code that may not get them a penny???
The world is a place where people need money, so as a lot have pointed out, this is a nice little carrot hanging out there, but the reality is, coders need money to live on, and they can't spend full time hours coding a driver that has a low probability of being the winner.
Leave it to the linux junkies of slashdot to whine and cry that something free was shut down. When will the leeches stop bitching and realize that real world cost means someone has to pay for THEIR free rides....
a few ideas you whiny freeloaders should think about

yaaaa, 2 years to plug the last hole that they KNEW about, that sure is speedy....
2 years of knowing the hole was there and then fixing it once the public was made aware of it for the second time is a "tiny lapse of time"???

/. mods, trolls do not need to be encouraged!

Countries can just pass a law giving them the recourse of fining the companies that are being advertised via spam.
Said compaines could be fined HUGE fines, and thus make it unprofitable to advertise with spammers.
An alternitive that most admins might like:
Catch a spammer, and get the privilage of pulling the lever to the trap door, under that nice rope the spammer is tied too (by the neck)...

various other products are cheaper, have true support, and even your grandmother can set it up...
