Lets assume that I have a multi million dollar home in Nantucket with a nice view of the ocean (which could not be further from the truth). One of the reasons that I purchased this fancy home was because of the breathtaking view of the ocean. Some developer comes along and says that he wants to put a number of large fairly ugly looking objects in the space that was once a gorgeous ocean view. Of course I am going to be opposed to that. I am also opposed to putting more oil rigs in alaska for much the same reason. You are taking a gorgeous area and mucking it up with some man made contration

Suppose that you own 100 shares of Microsoft. You think that the price of MS is going to decline over the next few months. You are worried that you are going lose money when Microsoft falls. What you could do is buy a but options that allows you to sell your 100 shares of MS at a set prices during a set time frame. Suppose that MS is trading at 100/share. The premium on the put option is $0.14/share. Your inital out flow of cash would be 100*.14 or $14.00. Assume that the put option contract allows you to sell for 70/share
Now suppose the price of MS dropped to 50 dollars a share. The value of you current holdings are $50 (price) * 100 shares or 5000 dollars. However, the value of your put option $70 (specified option price) * 100 shares - 14 option premium = 7000 - 14 = $6986
I am not sure what the slashdot crowd has against certifications. Here is my two cents
1. Find something that you are interested in
2. Find out if there are any certs associated with that interest
3. If there are go for it
The chances that you will be hired based on the certification alone are very very slim. However, you should not get a cert in hopes of landing your dream job. If you do believe that a piece of paper is going to land you your dream job you will be very disappointed. The value of the cert is that it may help you to get an interview and in this shitty job market anything that you can do to increase your chances is a good thing besides a cert will never hurt your chances so what do you have to lose. There are some people (especially on slashdot) who will tell you that they will never hire a person who has his/her MC**. It has been my experience that the people who do not hire based on a cert are as few and far between as people who hire based solely on a cert. It is incredibly naive to think that a person will be a good or bad employee. I have had MCSE's work for me who have sucked but I have also had some really knowledgeable ones as well. The same goes for employees who have no certification. Besides would you really want to work for some jackass who thinks that you are worthless because you took some certification classes/test etc.
Finally, no matter which cert you pursue you will learn things that you did not know before sitting down and studying for the exams. I am willing to bet that there are very very few people who would ace each and every exam. Learning more about the products and/or services that you are interested in is never a bad idea.
I am convinced that Adobe bamboozled many people in this case. Here goes:
Adobe pushed for an arrest (which they got)
Dimitry was arrested and Adobe took a slight PR hit
Adobe than said that they do not think that he should be punished. Knowing that the case was now the US vs... As opposed to Adobe vs... and that the government would be reluctant to drop the case.
However, Adobe still comes out relativley clean because they eventually did the "right thing"
If something is illegal it does not matter how you sell it...It is still against the law. For example, if I sold you bag of crack the DEA would not care what medium I used to sell it. I do agree with your second point. However, I belive that there was some confusion as to who actually held the copyright for the ebook cracker. In one place it said Dimitry was the sole holder..while in another it said that it was the company.

The company violated American law by selling this software in the United States. We could not got over to Russia and arrest them. However, if they were to step foot on American soil then they coule be arrested which is what happened. I do not like the DMCA but it is law and people/companies who conduct business in America should be aware of the laws. I do not think that an arrest should have been made but I do think that both Dimitry and the company that he works for need to be a little more careful next time.
I think that the original poster should take some time and review his relationship with his child. If you feel that you need to monitor your childs internet usage then there is clearly a problem that has nothing to do with the internet. This seems to be a trust issue. My suggestion would be to build a trusting relationship with your child. Once you have done that the internet usage monitoring would no longer be an issue. Do you support the vchip (I think that is what it is called..you know that tv thing)?
I am not so sure about that. The Harry Fox agency (to the best of my knowledge) does not represent that peoplle that own the rights to the sound recordings or the air time. I also do not think that they have the rights to the covers. There is some clause that allows bands to play covers without being sued. If you do not believe me than explain why there are legal bands that do very little but cover others works (i.e Itchy Fish and excellent perl jam cover band)

I do not understand why everybody here is so against computer certifications. They are not bad. It could be a problem if a company only hired individuals that are certifies. However, that is not the fault of the certification. I think that certifications can be beneficial to both the employee and the employer. To say that they are all bad is just plain idiotic.
I for one am sick of hearing about this crap. All that I have to say is fsck the RIAA.
However, I also am sick of hearing people complain about it. If you do not like do something about it. There is not much that I can do. Except refuse to buy New CD's. In fact I do not think that I have baught a new cd in well over a year. I have grown very fond of used cd shops. I suggest that everybody do the same.
