  1. Simplicity ??? on Windows Live Search goes Live · · Score: 3, Insightful

I guess they didn't get the simplicity we like so much of google

why the hell do we need scroolsbars in the search window!! we have one in the browser.. can't event use page up /down

and so many cheap baby graphics, no wonder it's so slow

    I hate it already

  2. Re:They need to do their homework... on Offshoring to a Ship in International Waters · · Score: 1

  3. So much space for email ? Attachment size ? on Speculating About Gmail · · Score: 1

Isn't 1gig too much just for email ?

All my mails (including a lot of spam) since 2000 takes about 122mb uncompressed...

Would be nice if we could use this for file storage too then I would use my gig... You could send files to A lot of ppl without any bw costs ...

I really wonder what the max attachment size will be!

  4. Sharing that makes money on Cringely on P2P · · Score: 2, Interesting

What if we were to combine the completly free network and the possible future legal distribution system.

What I mean to say is that we have to make the users that share part of the payroll.

Let me explain, what if you made money by distributing the mp3s and movies you had on your computer ? Part of it goes to the bands and movie producers and part of it to you who pays the bw bill...

In that case won't you rather "sell" your bandwidth and hd space then give it away! ?

Then won't it be the end of the massive p2p sharring (a free one will always exist) but with the ppl you had the bw and space gone.. what will it be worth ?

The only problem in this is coordination of the whole thing ... lol a big part but still I mean it is possible to do that without even any centralisation...

For this to work the sytem needs this info :

1 - A way to indentify music and send the money to the right ppl

2- A way to bill ppl you d/l directly

This could be solved if we had a trusted system to make the transactions so that we could be sure of who really is d/ling. ( I kinda see paladium is this god forgives me ) And to whom are really the (c) rights...

If the system can provide that info then there's nothing stoping it :) and it will keep making money !!

we will see competiton on the content prices , on the bw prices too... the lower you set your bw
price to be on your host the more d/ls you get etc...

The higher quality and the faster you are the more $ users will pay etc ...

It makes a new viable biz :)

Now I know this is kinda utopic but I still feel it's possible... feel free to bring me down on earth hehehe...

  5. Ads for donations.. common donation system ? on Would an Ad-Sponsored OS/Desktop Work for OSS? · · Score: 1

Really if it were ads related to linux etc like the ones on /. I wouldn't mind it's just the least a can do...

But it would be nice if ads were for donations for example we could have a common system to easily make donations and to have the donation tracked and this sytem would be advertised like in the splash screen you would see Project X need 2000$
Your sugeested contribution is 5$ do you want to help them ? And you would only have to say y/n and your cc or paypal accnt would be charged.

We could have something like a hall of fame of donation with who gave most etc.. I'm sure we could make donations work with ads or event without them. We could give prises to a la Air Miles...

I would like to see sourceforge do this. :)

I'll even give it some tought see if I can start this myself :) Shoudn't be really hard to do the developers could link to it ez.

  6. Re:Why use a PVR? on Excellent Hacks to the ReplayTV 4000 · · Score: 2, Interesting

that's what I did , just bought a ATI All In Wonder Radeon 7500, let's you record shows in mpeg 1 or 2 or someother codec.

And of course you can select wich shows to record from a TV Guide.

It let's you encode in vcd compatible format.. so burning to cd is ez.

It even has a RF Remote control :)

No need for a PVR with this

  7. Justification ? on Project Copycat Clones A Cat · · Score: 3, Funny

  8. Give the masses what they want ! on The Napsterization of TV · · Score: 1

In the end the masses always win, it's true for the gov it will be for AOL/TimerWarner etc...

I mean the ONLY way they can stop the video distrubution of the shows without the ads by a third party.

Is by offering the service the masses Want !

So you want MPEG2 quality Movies and Shows to d/l on the internet with no ads ?

Here it is , we'll charge you X for subscription to South Park, Simpsons, etc... something wich i'm sure will be a small fee.

Better yet ! why don't they distrubute the shows with their ads on the net ??

I mean , if I could get a show I want at 300k/sec I won't bother trying to d/l it from kazaa or irc for 4 hours.

I'm betting very soon you'll see TV/Inet/Telphone very closely linked and commercial broadband media distrubution.

It's the next 5 years. :) And I'll be riding the wave you can bet on it !

And btw ? don't you change channels why there's an ad ? Are they going to make this illegal ? I mean we have the Right Not to Watch their ads , it's their problem ! They need to find a better business model (same thing happened with the banner ads on the net)

  9. Let's dream :) Decentralise and Nationalise it on Cringley On Bandwidth-Expanding Modulation Technology · · Score: 1

Frist of all this article is simply bulllshit , seems like a SEC fake site. But feels good to think about it.

Let's day we do get 1-10Gbit in our homes. Then why would we the the ISP to root all the trafic ?
Couldn't we decentralise the network ? (more then it is today) Bypassing the cable company and routing the traffic ourselves ?

For exemple : 10 users get cable company A sevice and cable company B service here's your 100 Gbit gateway, repeat this and you'll get a new inet.

I mean with this kind of tech let's nationalise the fiber network and make a consistent architechture to let envreyone enjoy their bandwidh without the (*$@(* cable company.

Moreover with 1-10 Gbit in your house it's likely that prices of bandwidh will fall dramaticly. Didn't he say that this tech could be user on any phy network ? So your ISP gets the same augmented amount of band you do ! (the only problem beeing hudge switching costs)

    It's fun to dream :)

But it would be much nicer to nationalise the network infrastructure. (don't fear for big brother he's got much better chances of comming up on AOL AT&T , UUNET )

  10. Get the community organised and moving on Slashdot in Politics? · · Score: 1

We need a Political Action Group.

Or we will get ripped of our rights that is for sure. And it's even more true with the recents evens

The first group I tought of was eff but it's mission is not what we wish for (as seen in previous posts)

I don't think this kind of body exists right now and the only peaple I see witch are in position to motivate and lead this movement is slashdot.
Slashdot is for me and many others a central point of our "cyberlife"

So if I wanted to create a Political Action group I would

1- Contact someone who could help us the the political arena
2 - Create manifesto for the group with the help of the community (Slashdot and others...)
3 - Create the lobby group
4 - Get the community to donate etc... memberships to pay for the lobby (5$ a moth should be affordable to evreyone or something like that)

No more time to talk ,,, got a course this morning but I'll look into it and I hope you DO TOO, contact me of you got info etc... we could setup a web site a lest to start and more info from ppl who knows politics would be apreciated

  11. Saving the Fiber Industries on Municipal Networks as Alternative to Commercial Broadband? · · Score: 1

Municipal and maybe higher governement authorities should really build these like if they where roads.

As we are heading into recession the gov will have to take a larger part in the economy and building fiber networks up to the home would really help the tech sector

Maybe thoses 15 000+ job loses at Nortel etc... could give the gov a kick to finally MOVE and get on this obvious revolution and this money making machine.

As for what you can do right here right now , let's mail your alleged "representatives" about it :)

  12. Problems.... and Solutions ? -- Down to reality on Wireless Freenets As The Parasitic Grid · · Score: 1

This kind of community sharing poses several problems.
    1. The Speed - If too much peaple connect to your Cable Connection it will be slow hehe :) 5 users on my connection would get max 2k/sec upstream.

    1. Solution - If we could use the bandwidth of multiple access points , a little like Kazaa's Find more souces for download.

    2. Bandwitdh, for an access point this can be a problem if you connection is fully used 24/24 you may have to pay for your bandwidh (using your connection like this could get you a 30-60GIG bandwidh ez)

    2. Solution ? - Maybe here , you could impose limits on your share bandwitdh

    But in the end ...

You want to create a free wireless service yet
you can pay a laptop and a wireless card ?
    what's that crap ??

What would really be interesting is to build a cooperative system. In witch each user would pay by the bandwidh he uses a very low fee ,, could be around 5-10$ /Gig (no montly fee)
Access Points would get let's say 3-7$/gig for each gig of traffic they provide.

That way we could have quality access points controled by local folks who do not care about making profit or not.

    - To have a good stable and fast access point
For 300$/month you could get a colocation service
At your local non profit ISP :) hope you have one
And a computer of 1000$ with a wireless card and an antenna could do the job

Your bandwidh cost and monthly cost would be covered by the little fee to users
and they would get Stable Fast Access to the Internet via something not Evil :)

And you could still get access to the little access points who can't spend 2000$

I think this would the way to go to build something that can scale ....

Having some sable infrastructure is really a must have for any network
The current article seems more suitable for very little scale then for an entire city !

(Major access points could even do profits ,, that they could reinvest to expand the network)

I think I'll give this system a try near my university.... this fall :) (University Of Montreal) if you wish to help email me hexa00@videotron.ca
