Then how would you explain hauling your laptop around and logging onto cyber cafe networks? They are usually using DHCP. Why don't I get rooted when I trust this *insecure* protocol on a network I did not setup? The point is that the Apple defualts are not safe for roving computers...You "Already Comprimised" argument only flys so far.

by the way did you read that rebuttal on the DNS security hole? If you had you might have noticed that it is a DHCP problem not a DNS security hole.

I can attest to the superiority of the RockBoxx firmware. The list of features keeps growing when other commercial vendors would have stopped implementing new features. I use RockBoxx for its great handling of VBR MP3s for instance.

I only hope the RIO Karma team is listening! I just bought one for my girlfriend and I plan to get one once my archos gets dropped too many times.

I am a member of a major entertainment design union and I have to say, many of the problems technology workers face are issues that I face as well. What your need is a union to protect your collective interests. I do not work by the hour and am considered a professional under the fair labor standards act. I have read many posts here about IT workers and management clashing over intellectual property rights, and assure you this is not new. As an designer, I create for my employer, but I am the sole owner of the copyright to my work. Depending on the project, I may even request royalties for my work. We are not business people, but we want our fair share of the profits made from our work.

"It really doesn't matter what you want. The DoD owns the code, because they paid you to develop it. If they want to incorporate it into a closed system, then they have the power to do so. If you raise a ruckus and attempt to stand in the way of that, you'll find yourself replaced, quickly."

That statement is not always true. I work in the entertainment design industry and work under union contracts that declare my SOLE ownership of the copyright for the work. I am an employee of the company, yet I own everything I do for them. (you have to be an employee according to federal law to be represented by a trade union.) They cannot simply reproduce my work without my consent. Additionally, they I also get "right of first refusal" which means they have to call me first if they are doing the show again.

I am also developing a database primarily for one of my employers, but I am planning to use it on many other projects, hence I am going to GPL it...

    One word of advise....ORGANIZE
Maybe then your contract wouldn't suck so much...
