There are several fields of mathematics that apply to CS. Some of these include graph theory, cryptography, linear programming, and vector-based geometry.

I double majored in both Computer Science and Combinatorics and Optimizations (a sub set of the fields described above). I found that a lot of the material was applicable to both majors.

  5. Re:not bad on "Port Knocking" For Added Security · · Score: 1

Actually, by crptographic standards, it is not more secure.

Remeber our mantra: security through obscurity is no security at all.

The strength of the SSH channel is defined by the symetric key size which, in the case of 3DES, is 168 bits. Concenptually by using port knocking, all you are really doing is adding and additional key to the SSH key. This key is relatively small, and extremely easy to decrypt, all you need is a packet sniffer. So now you're throwing a crappy key, in front of the strong 3DES key. If it takes you 3 months to crack the 3DES key, and 3 seconds to sniff out the knock sequence, then all you are doing is adding 3 seconds to a 3 month hack. That's not really an improvement at all.

That is a very naive comment.

The last time the people of China "[grew] some balls" was at Tiananmen square. That sure worked out well for them. I think some people forget that not all of us live in a somewhat "free" society.

I think it's very ignorant to think that the people of China deserve a government that abuses their human rights. I think that it is even more ignorant to think that the people of China do not have any "balls" because they do not try to stand up for themselves more often.

When you stand up for your rights in China, you are eliminated, plain and simple.

It's one thing to say that if you were in their situation you'd stand up for your own rights; it's another to actually do it when you are there.
