  1. Running isn't slow, but starting up sure is... on Is Mac OS X Slow? · · Score: 1

My wife's got a year-old iBook with 384MB of ram that I just upgraded to 10.2. It dosen't seem very slow to me when running Photoshop, Word, etc.

However, the damn thing takes a good three minutes to start up. My Dell laptop boots into XP Pro in about 45 seconds and Redhat 7.3 in 1:30 or so. Shuts down real quick, but man does it crawl on startup.

Seems like Apple and their hardware/software integration could come up with something that boots up in ten seconds or less.

No, that's Porsche. Porche will save Christmas.

  3. Re:PlowKing? on Google Sued over Page Ranking · · Score: 5, Funny

When your search rank is a fallin'
There's a man you should be callin'
    That's KL5-4796,
    Let it ring!

    Mr. Google is a loser,
And I think he is a boozer,
So you better make that call to the Search King!

    In Spanish too!

    Senor Google no es macho,
    Es solamente un borracho

  4. Re:Not looking forward to the outcome on Eldred v. Ashcroft Oral Arguments · · Score: 5, Funny

When the Supreme Court finds the wording of the Constitution too vague, they look at the intent of the Founding Fathers, of whom Thomas Jefforson was quite clear on the issue - that one generation shall not have control over the next.

Um...Isn't looking to Jefferson for the definitive answer in effect having one generation control the next?

  5. The Electric Company on What's It Like to be Google's Boss Techie? · · Score: 1

My question: What's the monthly electric bill?

10,000+ PCs must burn up a lot of power, and generate a lot of heat which requires a lot of A/C.

  6. Re:cloning and genetic engineering on Scientists Grow Human Thymus From Stem Cells · · Score: 1

I think any legislator who is opposed to cloning, stem cells, etc. for whatever reason should be forbidden to benefit from them if/when they become viable methods to fix human ailments.

Ten years from now, when every malfuctioning body part can be replaced, lets see how eager they are to outlaw such things.

  7. Battery-Operated Friend on Subversive Gifts for New College Students? · · Score: 1

    And I don't mean a PDA.

Seriously, buy her a vibrator. Hours of fun, no one else needed. Legal in most states.

  8. Am I Old School? on Sharing Increases Music Purchases? · · Score: 1

Are Wilco fans (I'm guessing a little older, people who can appreciate a cohesive album as opposed to a throwaway single) different than your average file swapper?

I always knew I was going to buy the album, even though I downloaded live versions of many of the tracks before they had official titles. I want the actual CD, the cover art, the liner notes, the fetish of going to a record store and buying a new album. Is your normal 15 year old kid who downloads a bunch of crappy Nickelback songs really into the whole fetish aspect of being a hard-core record hound?

The music I've downloaded has been bands that I've read about but haven't heard anywhere - stuff I'm never going to hear on MTV or a Clear Channel owned radio station. Lots of these downloads have led to purchases of whole CDs because I want to actually have a physical object. Is this dying out?

On a side note, I was very happy last week looking for the Wilco disc - it was sold out in a lot of the stores I looked in. Never had that happen before.

  9. Re:It's been said before... on The Music Business and the Internet · · Score: 1

I hate hearing people say that there's "no quality music in the stores right now". There are hundreds, thousands of great albums available at any given moment that you'll never hear about on the radio or MTV.

If you already own every album by the Talking Heads, Beatles, Wilco, Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, DJ Shadow, Ramones, Pixies, etc. etc. etc. THEN you can say that there's no good music left for you to purchase.

If not, you still have some shopping to do. I could easily name 100 albums that I'd buy right now if I had the money.

  10. Edge Flipping? on KDE 3.0 is Out · · Score: 3

Does KDE by any chance now support edge flipping (IE. Move your pointer to the edge of the screen and jump to the next screen)?

This is the single reason that I can't use KDE for more than about five minutes before becoming totally exasperated. I use this feature CONSTANTLY in Gnome. What's the point of having four desktops if I can't move to 'em quickly? (I know I could probably do this with keyboard shortcuts, but it's not the way I work).

KDE 1.X had this feature, and when 2.X came out I switched to Gnome. Seriously, the coolness of this feature is what got me hooked on Linux desktops in the first place - it is, to me, the most useful feature of any desktop environment/window manager.

Anyone wanna code this into KDE for me?
