  1. Re:The Budget Sucks on Where Should Space Exploration Go From Here? · · Score: 1

There are millions of people starving all over the world. So what? Do you honestly think that other countries really give a shit? Governments are too caught up in their own affairs to do anything more than toss a bundle of cash at the starving countries--and then what would that country do with the cash? It'd probably go to the only ones who are NOT suffering and in power. The ones who really need it won't get it. If anyone is absolutely serious about stopping world hunger/suffering, the first thing they'd want to do is take over the country and rule it their way. These starving countries lay idle because they have no real economic contributions to make--first they have to figure out how to rule themselves.

In the meantime the world powers are striving just to keep on top of the world themselves. They make half-ass attempts to "push humanity forward" with small cures for illnesses and space programs but anything done by the government is just to get good press so that they stay in power.

I don't understand why people keep saying we shouldn't eat so much when in fact it doesn't make a single difference to people on the other side of the globe. Those people don't need food or money--they need to change the way they exist, starting with the people ruling them.

  2. smaller audience = less cash on Violent Video Game Protection Act · · Score: 1

I agree with you on the topic of limiting a developer's creative freedom, but the only problem is that the more violent it is, the less money they'll get for it. At Wal-Mart, they choose which games go on their shelves and which ones don't. So if a company decides to make an ultra-bloody game, chances are it won't end up at Wal-Mart (btw Wal-Mart is a huge retailer that provides a large amount of sales for devs--it can't be ignored), and so it won't sell as well.

as much as we'd like to think, developers aren't in the gaming industry just to make great games--they're in to make great games that sell. so if they have a game that's rated M for Mature, it porbably won't sell as well as an E-rated game (for Everyone). do you see the problem there?

  3. am i the only one that enjoyed this flick? on Jet Lag: 2 Reviews Of "The One" · · Score: 1

i keep reading about how a good number of you (including katz) couldn't see what was happening or couldn't follow the fight scenes... maybe it's because i'm used to speed (hardcore gamer i am!), but it really wasn't that difficult to follow them, nor that hard to understand the plot.

the fight scenes kicked ass, especially the last one with the sparks (it's the little things that make all the difference). Street Fighter? what? just because they did a side shot of both Li's? i'd say it was much more fun than watching an arcade game (and that's saying a lot) because it was real people fighting with cool effects everywhere.

and about the god thing, they never actually SAID he would become god, because they didn't KNOW what would happen: it was mere speculation.

didn't katz pay attention? obviously not, since he termed it "incomprehensible gibberish". it was, in fact, quite understandable. you'd think it'd be, after he said it had no plot. and "Star Trek-ish time transporters"? dude, they were simple BLACK HOLES--they couldn't even control when or where it would happen (what about that chair thing? they build it AROUND the spot it occured in--that simple)... sounds like many of you have lost quite a bit of your imaginations, because that's what you needed to watch this film (and any other sci-fi for that matter)... i don't remember anything taking place in the sewers, either.

i was entertained, and that's all i care about. i mean, that's what movies are for, right?

  4. no, NOT magical! on Review: A.I. · · Score: 1

dammit, why are so many people talking about "magical robots" or magical aliens or whatever... i think that they were robots, and if you disagree, go watch the movie again. like someone said before: they are probably decendents of robots who were decendents of other robots who were created by humans... maybe the only robots that survived were in space (that's how they could have survived the freeze) and then started building more robots or something. who knows?

but nevertheless, if you had a little RC car and went back in the past to, say, the middle ages and showed them that... they'd call it magic, wouldn't they? because they've never seen anything like it before... in the same way, those robots (or that one robot) gave David life (power, juice, whatever) so that it can function again. and the memory part, the robots downloaded (as someone said earlier here) David's "memories" and so they all could "see" humans. and yeah, they looked robotic to me, if you looked close enough... and that cool vehicle they used... robots adapt, don't they? they become more efficient... that vehicle was pretty damn efficient if you ask me. but anyway... i hope you guys see what i'm trying to communicate here

  5. It's pretty damn powerful on GeForce3: Real-time RenderMan? · · Score: 1

yeah it's incredible that we have programmable pixel shaders (among other things), and it won't be very long until you see movie-quality gfx in games.

remember what games looked like 5 years ago? back then one of the best-selling games (Duke Nukem 3D) still used sprites for enemies. and today? Quake 3 Arena looks mighty fine, but it's been out since 1999. have you seen the games being created for the GF3 now? take a look at AquaNox, Unreal 2, or DOOM 3 (only decent site i could find)...

*ahem* quality isn't there? GF3 does have pretty good Full Screen Anti-Aliasing, motion blur (i don't care how good it looks, i hate it in my games), good depth field they're working on i imagine (looks good to me), physics (heard of Halo?) heavy subdivisions i don't know, and complex shaders... um, yeah, pixel shaders, and programmable... models cast shadows on themeselves, and they're pretty accurate etc... we already have that stuff man.

but anyway. PC aside, take a look at Final Fantasy X. it IS in real-time, on the PS2. you can find some previews of it at ps2.ign.com and some other places as well.

but, yeah, pre-rendered movies and such will always look better than real-time, because of processing power, like you said. but real-time gfx arn't as far behind as you think.

  6. Not cool on Asus Request Feedback on "Cheat" Drivers · · Score: 1

I'm a hardcore gamer and have been hearing about this for some time. Normally, I'd ignore this kind of stuff, but this is something different: the Asus drivers allow people to see through walls in the games blahblah, but they're drivers... you can't fix a frickin driver cheat! the game devs have no control over this cheat because the cheat itself is on the card, not in the game. Disillusioned you are, CmdrTaco, and this particular driver has everything to do with it. Asus is being a dick for pissing us off like this, because we all hate cheaters and this only makes it easier for the losers who can't play very well who resort to cheating... a driver-cheat is anything but cool...
