  1. North Greenwich, my man.. 4, in Zone 2 on London to Introduce Traffic Congestion Charge · · Score: 1

Uhm, the car park at North Greenwich tube station is £4 for 24 hours. It's just off two of the busiest main roads into London (the A12 and the A2) and only 10 minute tube ride to the West End. Five minutes to the business district.

I park there a lot. It's usually packed full and you have to wait 20 minutes to get a space though. Then you have to pay £5 for a travelcard.. so driving into London is a lot cheaper if you actually have a space there.

  2. AOL deserve what they get. on Mozilla, Gecko, Netscape, And Their Future At AOL · · Score: 5, Interesting

I, for one, am grateful that the Mozilla project has remained somewhat separate from AOL. Sure, it's got some high profile Netscape people working on it, but in a traditional business sense it's not connected to AOL at all.

AOL are up to numerous shenanigans right now. They're banning legitimate e-mail from TONS of servers. Their support for side projects is waning. Subscribers are leaving. It's a mass exodus, and all because they won't get with the times.

I have clients who haven't been getting enquiries from their Web site, simply because a whole batch of Web host IPs got banned from sending mail to AOL.

I used to be semi-pro AOL. I knew most Internet geeks didn't like their service, but I recommended them to newbies, since they do have a good 'get running quickly' service that's easy to understand. No more. My clients complain they receive TONS of spam now, despite AOL's OTT screening and banning.

AOL is getting everything it deserves. Let's hope this sealed off network dies a death. Even Bill Gates had the insight to ditch his plans to have MSN as a sealed off network. It's time for AOL to do the same.

    Mozilla will live on regardless.

Not only did it represent absolutely nothing of The Simpsons, and not only were the characters totally different to their normal selves, but the whole concept blew, it was totally unfunny, and a waste of 30 minutes. That's the moment The Simpsons jumped the shark for me, I'm afraid.

South Park has done a good job of picking up the slack though, even though it's fallen on its ass in recent times.

It hasn't fixed everything, but it's made me see things in a more pleasant light than ever before.

That said, I'm still a bit of a procrastinator, and my ascetic ways mean I'm a bit short of things to do other than my normal work.
I'd like to travel, but I can't seem to think of anywhere I'd really want to go (or, rather, could afford).

Still, life must go on, and we'll get somewhere eventually. Look on the bright side.. most of the unfortunate people in the gutter aren't there because they tried hard and made good decisions.

I'm a European and I'm ready to tar you as a softy socialist already.

The American system is far superior to the European system. In Europe, the workers have an unjust amount of power over employers. That's not freedom.

Take France. As you probably know, it's almost impossible to fire someone! If someone can't control their own company, then you're heading into dangerous territory. What encouragement is that for someone to hire someone else?

With France giving parents of three-child families exemption from income tax and helping pay their rent, you are heading for skid row and a MASSIVE tax hike. With French income taxes already the highest in Europe, you really are going to be up shit's creek with a turd for a paddle soon.

I love France, and I'd like to go live there, but with your neo-socialist work policies, I'd have to skip it till I'm rich. The French attitude appears to be 'leech the money makers dry and then give all the money back to lazy assholes who can't keep their pants up'.

With mandatory 35-hour weeks, and unemployment at ridiculously high levels, France is really headed for an economic dead alley.

I'd rather be in a society where I'm based on my effort and work ethic, than one like France's which simply hands over power to the ignorant and lazy.

However, I'd imagine a socialist European can't really get a grasp on basic economic theory, so perhaps it's time to stop.

I'm a bit of a wordsmith, and find that while learning words on a day by day basis is a good idea, it's actually using them that helps me retain them.

But more importantly, you can learn MANY more than 365 words a year if you look up the 'etymology' of the words you learn (the history and background of how they came into being).

Why? Well, take the word 'malapropism' that was highlighted in this review. It's find learning what it means, but if you rattle along to its dictionary.com entry you find out it comes from the word 'malaprop'. Digging further, you can learn what this really means.

Any French student knows that mal means 'bad' or wrong.

Now, à propos means 'to the subject/purpose'. But what does it also sound like? It's sounds like malappropriate doesn't it?

Now it's a lot easier to remember.

bad + appropriate + for subject = malapropism

a word that's inappropriate for the topic = malapropism.

Now next time you hit words like malice and malfunction you won't have to wonder whether mal meant good or bad.. because you looked up the etymology!

So, look up the history of words you learn, because you could easily end up being able to guess many hundreds of OTHER words simply by knowing the roots.

And if the RIAA can impose it, what about indie labels? Their music gets stolen too. What about artists who put their graphics online? C++ OS - A simple upgrade to C OS. Still just as complicated, but the ++ makes it cooler to use and adds a host of useless features that are non standard across all implementations. Besides, C OS is for old fogeys.

Python OS - Supposedly this exists, but since no-one cares, we won't go into it.

Ruby OS - EVERYTHING is an object. Want to open your calculator app? calculator.open; please. Need to enter some numbers? calculator.buttons[8].press; It's long, tedious, but at least it makes logical sense.
