  1. Re:Kids & Porn: Umm, so what? on Supreme Court To Review Child Online Protection Act · · Score: 1

This is borne out by several case studies of young children who are scarred by viewing their parents having sex

Are you kidding me? I'm 31 and if I saw my parents having sex, I'd be scarred for life.

  2. Re:so many choices so little time on Practical Universal Wireless · · Score: 2

E.g. If there were a combo pager/cell/pda I think many people would flock to it, provided it wasn't filled with bloat. Not saying bloat is always bad, but I see many of these wireless PDA's on the market with nothing worth true substance to make me want to buy it.

Getting a little OT, but Samsung is coming out with a cellphone / Palm combination this summer that to me looks like the first of these type of devices that got it right. There's a little article about it here:

    http://www.palminfocenter.com/view_Story.asp?ID= 17 50P

I like the form factor--I'd rather have a cellphone with PalmOS than a Palm with cellphone capability. Which is why I've never been too interested in the Kyocera (http://www.palminfocenter.com/view_Story.asp?ID=1 707) or that monstrosity Qualcomm came out with a few years ago.

I'm already sold on the PalmOS, so having the cellphone integration is a bonus. It's one less gadget I have to carry around. (And I carry my Palm everywhere.)

  3. The FBI's arguments on Wiretapping, The Year in Review · · Score: 2

Did anyone else find it odd that the FBI's arguments in support of Carnivore point to its effectiveness in prosecuting alleged criminals?

Given that critics oppose Carnivore for privacy / civil liberties reasons, arguing that its use leads to more arrests / convictions seems weird. I mean, throwing out the 4th amendment would lead to more arrests and convictions, I'm sure, but that doesn't mean that it's a good idea.

Seems like touting the effectiveness of Carnivore is just going to strengthen people's opposition to it. (Fine by me--it just seems like an dumb move on the part of the FBI.)

  4. Re:Skewed viewpoint. Yours. on Review: Ergo Interfaces Evolution Keyboard · · Score: 1

There's nothing in your post indicating you're a strict proponent of one layout over the other, but I get the idea you don't buy the idea of a supremely better layout in Dvorak.

I really was just trying to offer some alternate opinions (not an advocate either way). Personally, I believe that the dvorak is probably better--the applet you posted is pretty convincing. (Though "supremely better" seems like an overstatement to me.) Fortunately, I don't have RSI, but if you do, it seems like every little bit will help, and dvorak looks like a good thing to look into.

Slightly OT, but does RSI affect other occupations? I played piano when I was kid, 3 hours a day for 10+ years and never had a problem.

  5. Opposing viewpoint on Review: Ergo Interfaces Evolution Keyboard · · Score: 4

Disclaimer: I've never use a dvorak keyboard. But there are some studies that refute the superiority of the dvorak keyboard. There's an entry about the dvorak at http://www.urbanlegends.com/misc/dvorak.html. There are links at the bottom of the page to some articles. Also, for you Straight Dope fans, Cecil has handled the topic as well: http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a1_248.html

  6. Re:Slightly OT, but DOWN WITH REGIONAL HARDWARE on Linux for the PlayStation2:It's Official · · Score: 1

One point that I don't think has come up is copyright. A game may have different trademark / copyright restrictions in different countries. This is particularly important when it comes to licenses--for instance, the Marvel characters. A while back, Capcom ported their Marvel Super Heroes game to the Sega Saturn and because at the time, Acclaim had the rights to all Marvel games released on consoles in the US, they (mis)handled the distribution of that game here.

  7. Wonderswan on Gunpei Yokoi: Mr. Nintendo · · Score: 1

Before he passed away Gunpei Yokoi also worked on the Wonderswan and the game Gunpey. The Wonderswan is a really cute little portable machine. The coolest thing about it is that the it can be used either in a tall or wide orientation (depending on the software, obviously). They've done some clever things with the buttons and d-pad so that they work in either orientation.

Gunpey is an insanely addictive dropping pieces puzzle game (one of Wonderswan's launch titles), which is one of the most original since Tetris invented the genre. There's a Windows demo downloadable here. Click on any of the 3 bulleted text links on the left side of the page. They require you to fill out a form--you can probably enter garbage. (It's been a while since I downloaded it myself.)

  8. Remeber the Wendy's Commercial? on The Creation of "Fan" Sites · · Score: 1

Anyone remember the Wendy's commercial from a few months back where Dave Thomas was posing as a customer in a chat room gushing about the Wendy's chicken sandwich (or whatever it was they were pushing at the time)? I guess it was supposed to be clever but I remember being creeped out by it. The fact that the marketing people thought that sort of deception was cute shows you their mindset.
