10 times more expensive? I buy a magazine called "Adbusters" whenever I can find it on the store shelves... They have no ads, and it is less then $8 Canadian price... If these people can do it without ads, so can the rest of the magazines...
I like sex, personally... I'll admit that;) but, er, wouldn't the sperm have a hard time getting to its "destination" in the zero gravity? And if it, using the internal forces of Woman, made it, it would have one helluva time fighting to get into that egg... if humans have a hard enough time "swimming" around in space, imagine a sperm? hmmm..
Not here in Ontario, and I wish they did... but at least they're having a little news spot at the moment (right after) about "How you shouldn't worry..." Which I guess is something...
Watching Y2K right now, and, to be honest, it's pissing me off... I believe what some people on here already wrote, the Y2K "bug" isn't the problem, it's the media and movies like this that are the problem - hysteria can be a dangerous thing... (usually is I guess)...
Bad movie, though... Obviously rushed... They're attempt to explain everything is soooo frustrating, since the character everything is explained to is a complete moron - how can he not know what's going on, -before- the day everything is supposed to go on? ugh... And planes dropping from the sky, why would propulsion and navigation be effected by dates? *Hadean shakes his head*...
Just said: "You won't believe it. The locks on prison doors are computerized." -- Yeah, and? Are they programmed to open on specific dates? Uh, no, most prisons I've ever been to, they're not... (all prisons).. non-stop stupidity for no reason but to cash in on the hype, NBC, you should be ashamed.
Oh, and don't get me on the hacker/rave thing... argh...
>but compare the life of a typical person in a >first world country now to 400 years ago.
Compare the life of someone in a THIRD world country: The technology us RICH have created have destroyed the environment so much, making the temperature rise, destroy the agriculture, destroying the rainforests where some of these people lived, bringing in things like harmful cigarettes and alcohol, when we know for a fact that many of the people we got these people hooked on cannot take the alcohol as well as we do (hence the entire "chinese and indians are all drunks" stereotype, since they're immune system is not able to handle it). So the 20% of the first world is better: What about the rest, or do they not matter to you?
>Everyone tells us Win2K will be the euphoric >combination, but no one tells us when it will >arive.
It's not going to be a combination, actually... They decided to keep NT for one more round in Windows 2000... And have the 98SE kernel go into what they're calling Windows Millenium (which I'm beta testing.. ugh). 2001 may be when they merge... haha... Anyways, Windows 2000 is supposedly coming out very soon (December?) since it's already in its final stages of testing (the last one being when its on store shelves, obviously)...
Anyhow, offtopic.. I'm gonna go read the other stuff on/....:)
First of all, why is five flavours (am I the only one that thinks of ice cream?) when it comes to the Better configuration, and only one for the others? I mean, you'd think the Best configuration would sport the most colours and such (is there actually any real difference in shape, etc. to make it so the Good and Best ones can't just use the other colours? I mean, a switch between DVD to CD or more RAM and what not isn't gonna change the chassis...)
Which brings me to another point, why for Good change the DVD to CD? I dunno about the States, but here in Canada (as a retailer) a good 6x/40x DVD is only $100 and a 48x CD is $80... What's 20 bucks when it comes to showcasing a great (?) computer? I mean, having a DVD and video-mirroring, albeit both not very useful at this moment for most normal folks, will more then luckily catch people... Ah well, maybe that's just me...
Being Canadian, I'm proud that ATI is the video card company for Apple (although I don't use any Apple computers), but the thing is, yes, ATI is a good company, but ATI Rage 128 is, I'm sorry to say, pretty behind the times now... Looking at the Mac Products on ATI's website, are we talking about the Nexus, Rage Orion or XCLAIM VR? I just hope its similar to ATI's Rage 128 Pro for the PC... *shrug*
Ah well, as it were, my opinion is that although they are cute, the iMacs and G*'s just don't seem like great computers (although they are, I know, but the looks make them seem otherwise)... And although they are great computers, I can still buy a comparable IBM PC and still get to use Photoshop and games for Windows and load up Linux whenever I feel like it... Until Apple comes out with something different (like they did oh so many years ago), changing the looks just doesn't cut it for me... FireWire, yes, was good.. but its obvious (good or bad) that USB is here to stay.. Anything else?
To be completely honest, I'm not a big Stan Lee fan (I'm not a big Spiderman fan either, although I do own several "important" issues, but ever since that whole "I'm a clone!" fiasco, I'll never look back)... Anyhoo, Stan Lee's a great artist, sure, but there's other great artists out there making comics (and not just for nerds, etc. like that article said...) So, maybe his name will help him get visitors to the site, who knows... I for one don't like to read for too long on a computer screen (I do enough as it is)... Where was I going? Uh, Stan Lee's good at art, but is he good at dealing with the weirdness the Internet can bring?
Anyway, until Grant Morrisson does something on the Net, I'm not gonna get too excited:)
Here in Ontario Canada, I'm actually do a one and a half hour radio show with my girlfriend on all things relating to geekdom every friday... Technically, we talk about the news for the first 30 minutes (generally reading stuff from Slashdot and other news sites, but mostly here;-p ) and then an hour of a particular topic (last week was history of gaming, this week, tomorrow, will be about, er, shite, we didn't plan anything yet!!) Anyway, you get the point...
I wanted to write out some suggestions and stuff, since I've been doing radio for years now, I decided that'd be no fun - considering Slashdot's nature (geeky and anarchic), most of my suggestions would make things more boring...:-) Anyhoo, like someone else said though, try to get a woman on the show sometimes, it will really make a big difference (Just think, three men, alone, together chatting it up about stuff they like... we all know where that goes! Or not... *blink*)
Anyway, hearing your voices IRL will definitely be cool... Er, now that I think of it, can I ask for permission to use the.mp3/.ra on MY radio show as the 30 minute opener? I'll plug Slashdot all you want (I do all the time anyway).. Would be cool to have more voices on air...
Anyway, have fun on the air waves... There's -always- gonna be something to talk about... Just don't kill each other, and you'll be fine... GL:)
I'll defend ya on this one... I agree, notepad (or in my case, UltraEdit) is the best thing going if you want complete compatibility... I create a two large websites (for a newspaper and a student organization at a university) using nothing but UltraEdit, a text editor that does nothing more then colour certain text depending on their function (HREF's, etc. are green, things between quotes are black, etc.)
I've never found a useful WYSIWYG editor out there, but when I need something more, I just simply get the barest product to do the job, and type in the code that's needed for HTML (ie: I get myself a simple freeware image map program, make the image with Photoshop and then type in the code...
Sure, if you want a crap website that doesn't work 100% between IE and Netscape, and reads as if it were an evil little devil, then go with the new Microsoft website program... I'm not a 'hacker' (and especially not a *nix hacker), but I prefer using a text editor, anyday.
Well, I only have 860 files in my/bin (of course, I'm running it on a sole machine for personal use)... (never noticed how many there were before...)
Personally, I don't care that much about the directory structure (as long as it's organized, at least).. If there's stability between them and future releases (and are similar enough to other Linuxs, ie,/bin/local, etc. exist), and verything works and installs just fun... Why other complaining? Everybody whined at my place of work for installing things on our Windows system weird, but it was organized and worked.. That's all that's important.

Well, _I_ was once one of those computer idiots, just like you were, I'm sure... A few years ago I didn't know Linux from MacOS, but decided that if I'm ever going to use a computer, I might as well know what I'm doing, and so I downloaded Slackware (on a 14.4 modem no less) and tried installing it... again and again and again... It took me a long time before I actually got anything working right, but I'm here now, using what is basically my own distro now, happy to have found Linux...
The only way I would have ever learned anything is by trying... If we stop all those "idiots" from even trying Linux, then Linux isn't going to get anywhere in the world and will just die out after awhile from lack of support and users...
I'm assuming National Phone in Sick Day has nothing to do with not liking your boss/job, but a lot to do with other national events such as "Buy Nothing Day" and so forth in which we, as the "little people" take back what is our - freedom and rights... By enough of us not appearing at work, it'll force the industry to start thinking about how we feel and not go rampant on firings, lay-offs and so on (ie, going on as if we don't matter and not caring about what we think and feel)...
I'm a student and work for an alternative/anarchist newspaper, and so I'll definitely be going to "work", but I hope enough of you understand what it's all about...
By the way, if you're interested in anti-capitalist sentiments (er, more like "anti-big-mean-businesses") check out http://www.adbusters.org... They have a lot on stuff like that.

I didn't write about that specific episode because that specific episode offended me alone, I'm talking about all the latest episodes... The Simpsons satirized things like meat-eating by, say, making Lisa a vegetarian and having Bart and Homer fight over a pork chop, they would never have had Marge, of all people, go into a butcher shop..
And yes, I've watched the Simpsons since the beginning... The doctor USED to be a good person, as a matter of fact... Cases in point: 1) Bart wants to jump the Springfield chasm with his skateboard, and the doctor attempts to honostly stop him... 2) "How about a wowwypop?" to Lisa, being a good family doctor, 3) Does a heart transplant for Homer, and wants him to eat better (hinthint)... I could keep going...
My point: Simpsons shouldn't attempt to change characters so drastically... As someone else said, attempting to make Homer seem stupider, but know more technical things, is a bad idea... Same goes with everyone else, sure, characters have to change, but they should change over TIME, and not all of a sudden in one episode (except for special ones, like Halloween Specials, etc.) (Like, say, Bart changing into a "nicer" brother over time, or Lisa turning into a more overt person, and a vegetarian)...
To me, personally, I found the latest episode of Simpsons to be revolting, irresponsible and rude. Being a strict vegetarian, I loved the old "peak" episode of Simpsons when Lisa first became a vegetarian herself (it had good, down to earth, humour on eating animals and such), but this one was just sickening, it just expected me to sit down and watch the show while a doctor I liked (the long-lost brother of a saxophone player I liked too!) was a disgusting two-bit doctor who didn't really care about people's health. Sure, it's a comedy, but Simpsons is just getting more desperate for toilet humour then ever before.
As for Futurama, of course, it was good, albeit slow (with a good reason though). It was sure as heck better then a lot of other premiers I remember (I dunno why, but ST:DS9 comes to mind). I actually liked the characters (Fry seemed like a character I might actually want to watch for a while), Leela and Bender, too, were nice... The "nephew", though, was a bit much, but oh well... I guess like CmdrTaco said, I'll give it a chance, a few shows, and I'll decide then.

people over the age and make them violent, but
society allows the violence to be deadly...
Americans with their ease of access to guns
