you don't seriously think they'd do this to hurt their product do you? its like Microsoft don't lose money by giving away free Hotmail accounts. big business was wavering over investing in StarOffice when it was free cos they couldn't see how Sun could make a going concern of it, so Sun are charging and some big business will thus go for it, so how can that hurt?
"it seems to me that real reason behind the split is to 'force' people to use Solaris instead of Linux"
I read it was cos big business was questioning how Sun could make a business model out of giving it away monetarily free, so were wary of committing to switching from MSOffice to StarOffice

Differences between StarOffice and OpenOffice.org
o The source code available at OpenOffice.org does not consist of all of the StarOffice code. Usually, the reason for this is that Sun pays to license third party code to include in StarOffice that which it does not have permission to make available in OpenOffice.org. Those things which are or will be present in StarOffice but are not available on OpenOffice.org include:
+ Certain fonts (including, especially, Asian language fonts)
and use an email program and web browser that don't enthustiasticly launch any JS or VB script they're sent. I use Pegasus Mail and Mozilla instead of the virus magnets Outlook/Outlook Express and Internet Explorer; that, and the previous posters saviness, makes ALL THE DIFFERENCE when it comes to virii
"You can spot them a mile off in your inbox. One day I went to delete one, and it ran on its own accord. I now no longer use the preview pane"
they're only gonna run this way if you use an email program stupid enough to automatically run sripts when presented with them (see Outlook and Outlook Express). other programs (see Pegasus Mail) wouldn't go near a script on principle
AdabasD is the database in StarOffice 5.2 and presumably StarOffice 6.0 (allthough not in OpenOffice, presumably the licenses don't integrate). I've never used it in either. Sun are never forthcoming in their documentation on anything to do with bringing AdabasD into StarOffice...anyone know anything about how its repackaged and integrated or anything else?

do you not think it might be someone representing this:
http://www.urban75.org/
the word 'slashdot' might seem weird to patrons of the Urban75 site but would they laugh at it the way you appear to laugh at them?
"I think that in most cases the intentions are good, but the folks capable of, say, defacing a website, usually aren't the same folks able to intelligently communicate a message."
then they're not 'hacktivists' are they?!
I believe hacktivivsts to be those taking political/social/environmental Action in a digital realm. the self named 'hactivist' movement is born from an old heritage of using direct action in the altruistic struggle for peoples' liberation. the web sites I've seen defaced by 'script kiddies' have been motivated out of selfishness for the their own or their small groups' ego

by doing so you help propogate the monopoly and keep them in power
