  1. GANT uses mozilla on Which Organizations Have Standardized on Mozilla? · · Score: 1

GANT AB (the clothes store) uses mozilla for both email and surfing.
We are at present using version 1.3 on both windows and macs and I use it on their Linux and Sun servers.
The main reason: Security issues with Explorer & Outlook.

  2. Already converted on Moving Your Kids to Linux? · · Score: 1

I have 3 girls aged 7,12 and 14. They all use mandrake even though I have w2k installed as a dual boot. They use it for all the games and hardly ever start windows. There are problably about 100 games that come with mandrake and I have bought all the other games I could for Linux. (Quake3, Fakk2 Civ3, Rune, Halls of Valhalla etc etc.

Flash games and java games (runescape) work fine with mozilla.

You'll probably have to start off with dual-boot and when you install linux make sure you have a separate home partition. It makes upgrading much easier..

  3. My experienses with windows nerds on Teaching Linux/Unix Basics to Microsoft Junkies? · · Score: 3, Interesting

I've been giving linux courses to windows nerds.

The first time I used Redhat 7.2. It turned out to be a mistake. The next time I used mandrake 8.2 and that worked well.

The graphics seems to impress more than the cli.(Unfortunately) Things that you as a unix person are impressed by dont work well for windows people. This was a real problem for me as I use the cli for most of my work. You have to learn to use the kde tools like konqueror and kwrite.

In 2 days you wont be able to do much more that show them the power of Linux. You need at least a week.

Here are some of my tips based on the experiences that I have had.

Make them install mandrake with a full graphics install with dual boot.

Show the wizards and control center

Show them X -query and rdesktop.

Windows people seem to prefer kde to gnome but dont forget to show them choice. Install both so you can show them evolution.

Also the web admins really impress them. (Swat, webmin and cups)

Mandrake has a beta of Staroffice (silverclub members only). Get it. (email me if you want it)

Dont even bother showing vi. Somehow it doesnt work for windows people.Use kwrite instead.

Make sure you install all the games. During my course the games really got them going. For some strange reason "frozen bubble" was a big hit.

Teaching the students the cli with commands like grep, cut etc. didnt impress much until they wrote their first script. I had them write a simple menu to start different commands. Then they understood the power of unix.

Get them to run ssh to each other. For windows admins this is very impressive. Installing kiofish in kde is also impressive.

If you want my course material, I'll be happy to send it to you. Its in swedish and not that good but you could send it through babelfish and get som ideas. Its for the cli so it wont be useful unless you can increase the course to at least 5 days.

These are some of my experiences. Hope they help you.

  4. Take a look at Tarantella on Thin Clients in a Computer Lab Environment? · · Score: 3, Informative

Recently I deployed a thin client solution using Tarantella from www.tarantella.com.

It works great using a webbrowser or the native client.
By using RSA securid I have been able to securely deploy both windows and unix applications to users on the internet. There are native clients available for windows, linux and Solaris

The big advantage is that you only need a windows terminal server for your windows applications. By moving as many applications as possible to Linux you can save a lot of money.

  5. Samba works on all unix on Large Scale Deployment of Linux for File/Print Services? · · Score: 1

If you need large scale deployment then sun could be a good alternative.

I have been using samba on solaris for several years now and its stable as a rock.

Recently I installed version samba 2.2.2 for one of my customers and have now thrown out their nt pdc.
I havent used ldap or nis but have stuck with passwd and smbpasswd. Its more work but fairly easy to administer with ssh.

By the way. If you need encrypted network (ssh) resources and you are using linux clients then you can use kiofish. You plug it into KDE, type fish://server in konqueror and you can access the server.

    regards Kenneth
