Barr's comment that most Linux users would purchase a comercial product if it was superior to an open-source product is right on target
I'm not so sure... Linux users can be even more rabid than Mac users.
If I had a nickle for every time I saw "If it isn't OSS, I won't use it!", then I could start muy own company to buils sloppy knockoffs to sell at incredibly high prices. '
Who was it that said (I can't remember the exact quote, so patches are welcome)
When they came for the Jews, I said nothing, and when they came for the Gays, I said nothing... etc... And when they came for me, there was no one to say anything,,,
Where IS the line? I think it is right here and now.
I work at printer company [snip] and we actually sell our printers at a loss. The printer is irrelevent per se, we make our money on the consumables. The toner and belts and such.
Long term profits for an initial product.
Microsoft is doing much the same. Not to be negative, but it is largely irrelevant what happens with the DOJ suit because of the sheer numbers of copies of Office that are around. People are used to it, and will continue using it.
Convincing my father to upgrade his browser was proof to me of this.
As long as Office is a popular suite, Microsoft will do just fine.
I would say the aims have not been met. While it has been shackled, M$ is still a 10,000 pound gorilla that can swing away at what it wants, it just has to bew quieter about it.
After a judgement is reached, at that point we will see a change in M$'s behavior, in one way or another.
I don't really see MP3 players really taking off until broadband becomes common. While you or I would LOVE one (I know I would), the average Joe will either need to a) Download multi-megs using a dial-up or- b)MP3 their current music, a task beyond most users.
I think this is the future of portables, but I think it's probably a few years off yet.
My SuSE 5.3 is amazing. I loaded up Redhat 6.0, but switched back. I'm not surprised it makes money, especially when it has such a large marketshare. Is anyone running SuSE 6.x? Is it as good as I hear?
I'm glad I use SETI@Home.
:-)
Instead of flying windows and toasters, my computer is actually doing something worthwhile with the idle CPU time.
Argue for distibuted.net, but I'd like to know we aren't alone.
And wouldn't it be cool if my computer found the answer?
Speaker-To-Animals first used one in the Niven Novel "Ringworld".
Hell, make it out of steel rebar and then..
*WARNING*
Disregard this post. Thank you.
-US Government.
CMY lightsabers? I like it!
Thank you, I couldn't have said it better.
:-)
I know, I tried!

Anything but NSI.
Can't think of anything worse.
I just have to comment on how well your .sig works with the topic...
Solid State is a very good point, but don't the new G3's have Firewire connectors?
Imagine Solid-state/Firewire HD's...
I went to a church headed by a Peverend Bible. No joke. Real name.
What else could he have been?

Smart moves by Apple, this will generate interest in Mac, and give them free exposure. I may have to donate my Apple ][ for this.
I'd donate one of my Macs, but they are all aquariums now (great Christmas gifts for my geek friends!)
Did anyone else's Mom say:
You can't make a living playing video games> ?
This URL is now sitting in her email to read.
Perhaps it's unimportant whether or not Microsoft loses. Inertia is hard to defeat, and they'll be around in force a few more years at least.
These aern't so secret, CNN mentioned them while they were happening.
I suspect that not settling (ala Intel) is the biggest mistake Bill has ever made.
This is a valid way to look at it.

But I've always wondered what made the unit so expensive. Is it the Mp3 Decoder chip, the RAM, the LCD, what?
The name and the idea.
Actual parts are probaly 40-50 $US

Picture Bill in the back of a white Bronco with a gun to his head, a wig and cash in the back....
Machine! You should be so lucky!
I have an abacus, with shifting magnetic field to make the beads represent raw binary!
And at night, turn reboot my machine, I have to touch my tongue to the power supply!
...Sorry, Monty Python....

One word - Crypto.
While I'm pissed that www.ben.com (my name)is being cybersquatted, I guess they can do it if they won't.
Doesn't mean they shouldn't be cautious on crosswalks while I'm around, tho...
