  1. Re:And what does it solve exactly? on New York Passes Landmark Gun Law · · Score: 2

Note that http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2011/jan/10/gun-crime-us-state states that NY only had 445 murders by firearms in 2011, which again for 20 million people makes this fairly comparable to the rates in France wich has much stricter gun control.

  2. Re:And what does it solve exactly? on New York Passes Landmark Gun Law · · Score: 1

I was a bit curious about that number of 750 murders with firearms per year in NY (I assume state, not just NYC), so I tried to find statistics in France, where I live.

I only found statistics for 1999 so it's pretty old, but we had 2600 deaths by firearms in the whole (roughly) 60 million-people country, including 2000 suicides (does that count as murder in your number?) and 100 accidents (not sure if that means self-accident or killing someone else).

Anyways, 600 people died of firearms outside of suicides for 60 million people that year. Sounds way too many for me, but then compared to 750 for NY (which Wikipedia says about 20 million people) it's still about three times less.

  3. My chemistry teacher was a loser on Sodium + Private Lake = Fun · · Score: 2, Funny

I read some chemistry teacher stories in this thread, and most do not show the teacher from a bad angle.
Mine decided to demonstrate that sodium reaction in a glass aquarium filled with water. After one guy recalled from the year before that there would be a reaction, we decided to get some distance from the teacher as he grabbed a piece that seemed just "too big" to not do anything stupid.
He told us to approach to see better, and we got away and prepared to duck for cover.
He then decided it was maybe unsafe and put a glass cover on top of the aquarium.
And that's when the aquarium exploded shattering glass across the whole classroom and doing quite some damage to him.
But then again, it's the same teacher who told us one morning he blew up his garage door with his car because he forgot to open it.
He also told us one liquid was very dangerous for the eyes only after one smart kid threw it with a pipette in the face of a girl who ended up evacuated at the hospital.

  4. done already, by K's Choice's latest live CD on NSync Copy Protected CD · · Score: 1

the copy protection is key2audio, works on 1 out of the 5 cdrom players we tried it on, where it would just not play at all. They have a website http:www.key2audio.com. The good thing is that it does not work(the protection system). The other good thing is that they advertise it on the box with a sticker and on the CDs where it's written on it that they cannot play on computers. The bad thing is that i think the band had no choice, it's just epic (sony) that started mass-producing those.
I wonder how long until labels start popping up and advertise themselves to the bands as "real copyable CD producers", if phillips would get back a music label or so.....

  5. tax prices as i saw them on tv on France To Tax Blank Computer Media · · Score: 1

yesterday on canal + they announced the tax on CDs would be 4.5FF and on DVD 29.5FF (i have no idea if they talk about DVD or DVD where you can write though)
now since a blank CD costs 5-12FF this tax is likely to double the price, i am really thinking it will improve the CD sales in monaco since i live in Nice, only a couple kms from it.
i am really sad the prices will rise, after all we had to wait some time for those things to get cheap before we could buy them, and now it's making it unafordable for quite some people.
i don't call it fair that people cannot pay for a hdd because it got taxed like cigarettes.

as a european i must say i'm surprised at how the english let this happen in England: look at it, an american base in England monitoring europeean traffic ???
hell i thought they were europeean too?
are they making this deal to avoid being monitored themselves?
until we find out there is another place in europe monitoring the English.
be it in england or in france i find it surprising that another country has a spying military base in a european country.
what would the US say if they found a european secret spying base in say ... NY ?
-"i'm X president of the US, open!"
    -" president of who?"
-"the US, i am your president!"
    -"we're not american!"

well i don't like it and i don't also like it if europeans are doing this, especially france, so yes, please, contersue!

not much too: 200$. and i've seen a 200 DVD/CD player this afternoon. a bit more expensive though :(
i'll never change any CD in that changer ... until i buy another one for the remaining and to come CDs ;)
