It comes pre-loaded with everything you need, and *gasp* Apple includes ALL the software on CD's!
They include your standard "Click one icon to reload your whole disk back to its original configuration", AND standalone CD's of all the OS's and apps on the system! And gee, they don't seem to be going bankrupt from included $.60 worth of CD's.....

The part that nobody seems to understand is that, bear with me here,
** VERIZON COMMUNICATIONS AND VERIZON WIRELESS ARE SEPARATE COMPANIES! **
This is mandated by federal law because VZ Comm is regulated (DSL, phone service, etc.) and VZ Wireless (formerly BAM, Primeco, GTE, Airtouch) is unregulated.
THEREFORE, VZ Wireless acts quite differently from its parent company.

Jobs' recent quote when the iPod shipped was right on the money:
"Piracy is a social problem, not a technological one."
That really sums it up. And you can see in Apple's products that they really believe this.
Ripping MP3's (or AIFF's) in iTunes is ridiculously simple. Like it should be. (Single click rips an entire CD)
Copying those MP3's to a portable music device is also incredibly simple. Even automated if you use an iPod (though iTunes works great with other MP3 players too!)
The only copy protection on my iPod is the fact that it's a one-way sync. And for what it's worth, it's a LOT LOT LOT harder to do a 2-way sync than a one-way sync. So I really don't believe the conspiracy theorists, and I think it's all about keeping things simple!
Steve's on the right track here. He understands.
There's no real technological reason that other companies can't do what Apple's doing. But for some reason, they "get it" and folks like MS, etc. don't.
If you use Solaris (which I'm guessing the original poster is, because he mentioned NIS), then the iPlanet directory server is included with Solaris. You have a license for up to 300,000 entries.
Because I'm trying to avoid CSS line the bubonic plague.
There are still a LOT of web browsers who don't render CSS properly -- my goal is to have the page look good in IE, Netscape, OmniWeb, Mozilla, iCab, Lynx, etc.
I don't want to block anyone from access because they're not using MegaloBrowser 4.999.999.999.today's build.:-)
On another note, I think we need to start a "retro Web" group or something -- one that shuns any site that involves any sort of proprietary extension, or any site with Flash!
(Agreed about the blunder by the W3C, BTW -- I miss the days when I could actually do something useful with Lynx!)
Exactly. I wanted the flexibility to put any sort of image I want on the left with each "headline" and keep the text lined up too.
If you don't use a table, the text tends to mush together... It gets even worse based on which browser you use -- as it stands now, the site looks the same in IE, Netscape, Mozilla, OmniWeb, etc... that's not easy to do.:-)
The reason for blackdot.gif is because each browser renders an HR differently -- so I figured I'd take a 1x1 black pixel, and "squeeze" it using HEIGHT=1 and WIDTH="100%"... That should draw a line fine...
Companies that buy those things have dedicated sales weasels.......
Which, truthfully, is a cool thing. The dedicated-to-your-account part is important, 'cuz then the sales guy has *2* interests:
1) Getting his MONEY.
2) Making sure you spend MO' MONEY.
Unlike generic sales weasels, the dedicated sales weasel has only ONE account. So if he makes you unhappy, he stops getting money. Therefore, they tend to treat you really well, in hopes you spends lots more money.
So they do things like throw in ServerStarts for free and extra disk and things like that...
To solve the problem, buy a Mac.
It comes pre-loaded with everything you need, and *gasp* Apple includes ALL the software on CD's!

Everything is easier on a Mac.

Consider it done.
Postgres is a great database.... really full-featured and feels more "robust" than mySQL..
I'd trust production data to postgres... not to mySQL though.
BTW, does anyone know if any of the original Ingres code made it into postgres? My understanding was that it was supposed to be the "next" Ingres...

And yet, somehow, this is news.
For those of us about to ROCK...
Where's the Mac version?
Veritas Volume Replicator (VVR) is a nice product. Works great with VxFS and VxVM (Veritas File System and Veritas Volume Manager).
Of course you have to pay for them. But you get what you pay for.
--NBVB
p.s. (VxFS rocks. Saved my bacon more times than I can count!)
Sun won't sell you any Enterprise or SF equipment without at least one I/O board (or chassis, in the SunFire case), and guess what's in there?
:-)
A nic.
TSM is an _excellent_ backup product, and works great with SAN's...
c omplex_storage_net.html
http://www.tivoli.com/products/solutions/storage/
Give it a try... works great! The downloadable server code comes with 30-day demo licenses...
I *love* the fact that I can have a non-photo driver's license.
I think it's awesome NOT to have my picture on my license.
Lets me grasp onto that last straw of freedom before they implant the brain-chip!
--NBVB
I'm guessing that price is for a single NIC.
** EACH AND EVERY ** Sun system has always had networking built-in!
"The network is the computer"... ring a bell? they mean it.
Damnit, you beat me to it. -)
more crap to make a slow, buggy overengineered window manager even slower and buggier!
Gee, thanks.
Glad WindowMaker hasn't suffered from the particular brain disease that infects the KDE and Gnome developers....

Why bother using this rubbish? 10 years ago, this was a good idea. Now that RMS has flipped his lid, who cares?
:-)
I don't give a Flying Pig (tm) about Free vs. free vs. Not-so-free vs. You-gotta-pay-for-it. The only thing that matters to me is whether it WORKS.
On the list of OS's that are usable and make the Hurd just another blip on the screen:
OS/2
Mac OS X
Solaris
HP-UX
AIX
Linux (all flavors)
IRIX
Mac OS 9
AmigaOS
BeOS
why bother with another one that can't even keep up with OS/2?

Good luck!
Agreed!
:-)
I have a Sun Ultra 60 on my desktop, and I use WindowMaker. FVWM works well too, but I like the NeXTstep feel of WM.
Agreed -- small window managers are the best!

Check out www.osxadm.com. I haven't put any real content up yet, but the HTML forms are done.
The only difference between my pages in 1997 and today is that I use a BGCOLOR="#FFFFFF" tag now.
How are they "hijacking" your DNS records?
Who's your registrar?? How can they update the DNS records for _your_ domain? Are you listed as the zone/technical contact?
If you gave them absolute control of the domain, then there's almost nothing you can do.
If you are the contact for the domain, update it with your registrar and make sure they're _NOT_ listed as the tech. contact!
Who's your DNS provider? Are they causing the problems?
Sun's E10000 Control Boards do this really cool knight-rider KITT thing with 8 LEDs! :-)
I'll try to get pics next time I'm in the data center with my camera...
