About 3 months ago I thought I was pretty advanced in my knowledge of astrophysics (for a person who has never formally studied it)
Then they decide that the univserse is flat, ie gravity doesn't bend light (yet what about the two guys who looked at stars during an eclipse and saw them bent?)
Then I hear that there are no such things as black holes because Albert E didn't add the energy produced by the energy into the equation. The result somehow being very dense neuron stars, but no possibility of black holes.
Then I hear light can travel faster then the speed of light.
And now black holes, that don't exist or bend light, and even if it could bend light the light could travel about 300 times faster then itself to get away, aren't caused by supernova's but just by gradual gas eating?
When we've all worked out what the hell is actually happening somebody let me know, until then I don't think I'll worry about it.
This sounds like a good idea but you'll still see plenty of 404s if this gets into action. Why, because 90% of 404's are a result of the page been taken down completely (especially if it's on geocities or xoom or some free provider).
A program that you could install for your browser like NetAccelerate (loads links off current page into cache when the bandwidth isn't been used) but simply loads the links far enough to detect a broken link or not would be very handy. Although it wouldn't solve any problems it would alteast stop you from getting your hopes up when you've finally found a link to a page that claims to be what you've been searching for for an hour.
Dear Slashdot, You have used our software in an attempt to encourage others to take a stand against UCITA, and therfore violate your license agreement. A signal shall be sent shortly to disable your software under our regulations.
I saw this on a documentary about clones a few months ago. Maybe when there's a planet full of dolly sheep they might find out the hideous truth too.

Fine spend billions and billions making a Mars base, but as soon as you start taxing there astroid dust and alien artifacts they'll just rebel and the international space navy is not quite up to standard to kick them back into line.
I have no problem saying, well done on your Wine support Corel and giving them a nice trophey with slashdot.org logo on it but is giving Corel $2000 really going to help anyone?
Vote for people who will make use of the money. Pity Beanie Awards was set up as it was, should of given everybody a year to make programs in some needed categories as then it could of been used for motivation not just a pat on the back after the event.
I like the little news at the end of the article about the stock price change. Somebody should make a timeline of microsoft's share price along with the time of important law case issues and see if the people are really concerned about the moral and law issues Microsoft is facing or does everytime the stock goes down due to a case people just buy the shares back up because they are cheaper?
For it was fortold, that when the two moons shall be seen together that the oceans would rise, and the sun would never come up again. So it is written.
Alternatively if we never see the two moons again might be for the same reason we never see Peter Parker and Spiderman or Bruce and Batman at the same time. When we are only "seeing" the dark side of the moon maybe it's getting into a slightly smaller dress and posing as the other one.
*Beos was used to diffuse a highly volitile terrorist situation and freed 25 hostages. *NetBSD showed a person on the edge of a high rise there was still reason to live. *OS2/Warp performed a delicate medical procedure using only a ball point pen.
Incase the rest of the world forgot our beer drinking Crocodile Dundee sterotype our scientists can remind them. That sterotype is completely untrue, I prefer to get wasted on Burgandy Rum.
Half the awards look like they're going to be given out to people who are heavily sponsored by corporations already. Spend some more money on people who make games for no finacial reward.
Ocource there are practicle applications. If the nano-guitars could carry oxygen I want my blood replaced with them so the music could travel through my body for real.
The fact that you can actually play the guitar is impressive, not just need self operated moving parts and you pretty much have the most advanced medical applications to man.
Screw the damn organic immune system, this leaves room for robotic defences, maybe eventually to the stage where robot cells could identify HIV and destroy it. Still it seems unlikely any advanced sensory unit could be added to a nano-robot anytime soon.
I can concieve that computer could become alive and feel emotion and senses, but almost instantaniously after reaching such a stage it would already reach utopia.
The entire point of existance is happiness, it's what we all strive for in our own ways. If happiness is an emotion programmed into a computer, the goal of an existance is for happiness to be on all the time. The Alife would serve no other purpose then to be extremely happy and sit around.
With any luck all non constantly happy life around would die and all that is left is eternal bliss.

This has pretty good ramifications for gaming, role playing games that make their own plots 10 years down the track.

Organising crime stuff via net in internet cafe's atleast stops chances of direct trace. Would be just the place to set up crime syndicate or spam.
Still, would be a bastard if I needed to check email really quickly during curfew time just before or after school at nearby cafe.
Better make it safe, give everybody a concrete bunker with no windows and connection to outside world. Only allow them out one hour a day, should ensure they don't get too influenced by the evils outside.
I heard somewhere that the Microsoft passport system is what caused the security leak. Here's some PR at the passport site
"Gone are the days when you had to remember a member name and password for every site you visited. With your free Microsoft® Passport, you select just one member name and password to use on a fast-growing number of major sites!"
Currently their working with a slight variation of the above plan but it's still ingenious, by getting rid of passwords all together it is darn easy for you to log on.
I'm doing 2nd year computer science and from what I've seen of Ada (which is a lot) it makes bloated binaries, runs relatively slow and tries to cut off all entire low level operations from you. Granted it's a lot more robust but the costs are too high. Maybe for some certain apps it would be okay but as far as Kernel is concerned you need something with real speed and portable such as C/C++.
For those of you not in Australia, as the slashdot article mentions the net censorship was done to win an independant's vote for the GST. (I like how according to the independant the GST becomes more moral when there's internet censorship, democracy for you). At any rate, once all the independant's demands were met, he did a back flip and refused to vote for the GST yet the net censorship still went ahead. Our beloeved Prime Minister John Howard, very devote creationist Christian, said that he was in support of censoring the internet because there were things on there he wouldn't want his sons to see. His youngest son is 19. Sadly I believe his sons take up a very small percentage of the Australian internet users.
I run a webpage which has a listing of mentally ill hate sites so people can look at them and see what they really are. If that bill comes in I wont have any ability to continue that page. http://www.rebel.net.au/~andrews/dhw/index.html
Everybody got insulting against the author of this post but I think he has a good point.
The whole idea of the graphs is for a pictorial display of the results, if they do this they might aswell start at 99%, put p3 at 100% and then the k7 with 150% will look 50 times faster.
The graphs serve absolutely no good purpose unless they show you the true ratio, and when you have your minimum at 100, max at 150 you can start at 0 without too much wasted space.
I've been living in Australia for 19 years and not once have I called or been called mate, asked to have someone throw a shrip on the barby, or throw a boomerang. Ahh beloved steryotypes.
All English people are on a Red Dwarf sized startship and all Americans are yellow and animated.
There is such thing as a revolution not using guns, it's called, voting for the other party at the next election. Yes, we banned semi and automatic guns after a very bad gun masacre, and since semi automatics should have no place in hunting or protection, ban them.

so if it's funny about kids, it can be funny about mindless grown ups.
Fermat's last therom took 350 years to solve with proof.
x^n + y^n = z^n has no solutions for n > 2 while x,y & z are integers. No proof given.
If Fermat lived in our time no doubt he'd be the best obfuscated C programmer ever, no comments, no reasoning.
And in reality nobody else has probably caused such great interest in mathamatics.
Our whole year system is based on Creation being on 4000 BC and the world was meant to end on 1000AD. Jesus was recorded to be born on 4BC.
Instead of recording years when some Roman religious nuts decided to we should count the date as seconds from when Unix was created.
Also lets be good C programmers and say the new millienium starts on 2000 not 2001.
