  1. irrelevant on France To Tax Blank Computer Media · · Score: 1

I live in France but I find this tax completely irrelevant to me, as I am quite close to the Belgian border.
However I fear that the french industry might find it less irrelevant for them as the only thing that can stupid taxes like that one bring is the creation of a black market.
I've been living in France for two years now and I have yet to see the government making a smart move.

I completely agree with you. Hair has been a very important element in preserving the normal functioning of the brain before hats were invented.
However I think that you will agree that today hats are a complete substitute even for 10" hairs and even in extremely cold areas.
This is what I meant when I said that hair is useless.

Actually, me too I have my head shaved and my official reason is my religion (buddhism). But still, I wouldn't do it if I didn't like it to be this way (ie if I didn't find it "cool").
People actually do three types of things: things that make them survive (eating or sleeping), things that they find cool (make them feel better) and things that earn them money (that they can use on the first two). The whole process is called (human) life in the modern society. If you happen to think deeper about it you are going to find that it bears enormous ressemblance to the life of most lifeforms on this planet. So, actually, I don't see the difference between being able to compile the kernel in 10 minutes and owning a cool glowing in the dark case. Both of them are useless to you (of course, not counting the people that are making money of kernel binaries, but that's another story) in terms that they do not help you to survice, but both of them make you feel better in some way. It just depends on what makes you feel better (and that one is called a values system).
And finally the whole way of seeing things like this is called buddhism (or at least the buddhists think so).
My only problem is that owning that cool case doesn't make feel so good as other things that $200 could buy me (like vast amounts of RAM that could speed up my kernel recompiles).
It seems that this is the prevailing opinion among slashdotters, so either we are not the target market for this product, either they've messed up their market analysis.

Life is full with this "style over substance" stuff. Do you happen to own a lava lamp? What do you use it for? And what do you use for that wedding ring you are wearing? Or your hair? Why don't use shave it, what's more important is the inside of your head, not the outside, hair is totally useless.

Me, personally, I find the cases incredibly cool (almost as cool as lava lamps), but given that price tag.... hmmm... I don't think so

If intelligent computers are actually able to surpass humans, we should just concede the Earth to them. It's called evolution - the superior life form wins.

And, yes, I agree that this is inevitable. Electrical reactions are faster and require less energy than chemical ones.

I've always been very curious about one thing... if souls are really eternal and if they are neved reused (they are not according to the Bible I think) then isn't it quite crowded up there :-)

I really want to know how the Bible explains this... hmm.. let it call paradox?

France made a similar move March this year, authorising people to use encryption. Let me remind you that before this it was illegal to use ANY kind of encryption (you were not allowed to use ssh for example), which was rarely absurd. The URL (English) is here
