A quickie check of the USGS's mapping sites reveals that the magic spot isn't quite in Langley, and doesn't even seem to be near any roads. I've got GIFs saved of the finest grain info I could get without paying cash to the USGS; I'll prolly forward them either to the folks doing the crypto breaking or put them on a website somewhere.

Also, yes, they probably DID use the magnetic field to hide it. Specifically, a compass. :) The only USGS maps available of that fine grain are typically topographic maps used by hikers and engineers, or county maps. Most of the topo maps also have magnetic declination marked (how far off magnetic north is from real north) because they're meant for use with a compass and landmarks.

Of interest to those searching--the magic spot seems to be located in Virginia, just outside of Washington, DC along the Virginia/Maryland border. For those ordering maps, the Washington West or Falls Church maps seem to be best bets for finding general area.

I'll also see what other stuff I can dig up with various mapping sites on the net, too (to get road names and whatnot).

As for the bits on getting rid of debris and hiding it underground...that sounds suspiciously to me like it could have been hidden in a cave or possibly an abandoned mine (yes, abandoned mines are fairly common in this part of the country). I wouldn't be at all shocked to see that the key was hidden in a mineshaft...

    Good luck!

Unfortunately this is not the case. My company routinely buys $10k-$20k server hardware but blindly sticks NT on them. Furthermore, each of these monsters serves up one application.

We've also got a $10k NT machine that we are supposed to migrate to for fileserving (from Novell on a couple 486s). This project has been around for about 6 months and has gone nowhere since our network admin (a total incompetent in addition to our other problems) can't make it work. NT has no disk quotas, crashes the machine, doesn't support workable login scripts, etc, etc, etc. So what do we do? Don't use a real OS! Waste the money by putting the project on the backburner!

I actually setup a backup print server on Linux because the NT print server kept crashing so much (about 1/week). But the only people who use it are the ones I supervise. *sigh*

Several years ago, when I was working for local radio in the English Midlands, the author gave me an interview for one of my programmes, in which she discussed the similar ideas in her book "Dying to Live" (all about Near-Death-Experiences). The final point she made, about the meme-based model of the world around us being that which we call "consciousness", hasn't hit home yet (maybe because I'm a practicing Christian), but it would be really useful to have a door into her understanding here. She's jolly well researched, too. I hesitate to condone the word "psycho-babble" because discussion of such subjects is rather like trying to tell a being in a two-dimensional world that there is an "up". Again, your words in my mouth. I'm not forcing nor do I want anyone else to force Company X to use License Y.

What I am saying, is that if Company X takes already existing source code under Open License Y and re-releases it under Closed License Z, that I, the consumer, and you, the programmer, have both been screwed. This is because Company X, by putting additional restrictions on existing code has reduced the "amount of freedom in the world".
