The way, it seems to me, is to build a few options into slashcode.
First, when an issue has any type of political implications, then, as the catagory images that are placed with the story, a vote via email link, a paypal contribution, and yes... a typed letter that can be directly printed (event the envelope). This way/. would become a very powerful force overnight. If done right, you could have a pro and contra click through, but maybe taco and the bells can mod that one. It seems that with those three options you get a very powerful trio while given the average/.'er (even those anonymous lurkers) and chance to really influence the political system that we all flame about so often. And I hate to say it, but if you hand it to your readers,/., than you will in a way become a political force.
What's that you say? Your not interested in becoming political? I dare say that/. is already VERY political. So anti-up. I'll be right there with you, all the way...
The green card lottery is real, and yes, it might be canceled. But either way, there are scores of companies that scam money out of immigrants by "helping" them enter the lottery. THE LOTTERY IS FREE, and the explanations are freely given in many languages at the US emabassy online (or in person). Here is the german/european link(in english).

I don't see this anywhere! Why is no one looking into the images of the webcams ON the WTC buildings?? It seems that there would be a record that might be useful, and if a group of techies might be able to find it, it would be/.'ers. I have looked around and I see at least 3 cameras that might have been active during the event. Also there are other cameras around NYC that might prove usefull in resolving future unknow issues. I have not found any cached images, but I'm not exactly sure where to look. At least 2 of the cameras have webpages that still function, showing offsite hosting.
I forgot about the directions and how they where spacial and not text based. I think that MUST help develop spacial relationship from a 2D to a 3D environment. That is map reading. Which I might add, is one of those quiet little thorns in the side of so many adults. Its amazing how people love maps and can't use them if their life depended on it.
Lego's and their directions help to bridge that gap. They relate a 2D illustration to the real 3D object. And its complext 3D sometimes! I remember my first Fire Station.
So where is the scientific lit that supports Lego children grow up with bigger brains?? I need all the advantage I can get;)
It's hard to imagine growing up without them. I was an only child till 13 and Lego's gave hundreds of hours of fun. I waited for the new space lego's like they where comments from Greenspan. Its no wonder they are not doing so well. They're up against Diablo2. Legos don't do it for the ADD generation.
Lego's will not stage a comback until you wrap them with LEP's and embedded chips. Imagine the possiblities! Could you use them to build a simple AI and then give it a face and play with it? The robot Lego's have a chance if they jump on the latest tech. Then the kids would be all over them, again. Sh*t, I might too.
When L*nux can finally get to the simplicity of Windows or MacOS then and only then will we ever have a REAL desktop shift. All of the apt-get and rpm -i is all a mystery to the users who will turn the tide. Get a grip and develop to them or else be forver banished to the server, which, as fun as they are, servers are NOT going to move linux past the honeymoon to the family.

This is certainly true of difficult or complex jobs, but sometimes the reduced expense more than compensates for the lack of control. In fact the job, if paid on merit levels or completion, gives a sense of self determination to the programmers and spurs them on to better and faster work. And as a final thought, how many programmers do you know that do well face to face. Sorry guys, its not exactly politics.
Its at least 5k miles from my job to my seat. Both of which I'm on right now. And for what its worth, I wonder about their connection speed in Novosibisk. When I tried to get a DSL here in souther Germany I got the same "aye aye, its coming in two weeks" crap that I got in the states when I tried. Needless to say it still is not here, over one year later. I've given up an settled for isdn. It just floored me that normally excrutiatingly honest Germans would lie to me in good old american fashion. "yeah yeah, check's in the mail"
It seems that the August article on the "Linux Chameleon" in Linux mag was a bit uninformed as the instability of his position there. Its a great article but the you'll have to grab the print copy of it since the website seems only to carry the TOC. Its a crying shame to see him get his walking papers. But, needless to say, I think a "keep an eye on that one" is appropriate, whatever his "personal insterests" turn out to be.
