Yeah. What he said. As for sound, if you are not planning to use your system for anything that requires great sound (like sound editing on your PC) then this should be fine. Most of the time people use these small speakers anyways.

These are really a good deal for what you are looking for. A 300 Mhz K6-2 with 32 M of ram, 24x CD rom, 2.1 G HD, 56Kbps V.90 PCI Modem, etc etc, for $399. For a starter computer, it's great, IMHO.

It says that the sound is Soundblaster pro compatible and the video is Ati Rage 3d IIc.

  3. The art of Linux on Red Hat Backlash? · · Score: 1

Do you tell an artist who has spent months of his or her life engaged in the creation of a work of art that he cannot sell his work to a museum without losing the artistic dignity and pride? Certainly not. The artist is offering a valuable service to the community by creating beauty and enlightenment through hours of hard work. As long as the money does not dictate the art, then the artistic integrity is maintained.

And so with RedHat. While what they do is not necessarily art, there is still the respect of the community at stake in this discussion. While they may not have completely designed and coded Linux, they do a valuable service to the community by promoting, supporting, and distributing Linux, and if they can get paid for it, more power to them. As long as they don't attempt to change Linux in an attempt to take control of it, or in any other way violate the agreements which our community is founded around, then they are right to make a living selling Linux.

Listen, as a developer in an ever changing software world, I am glad to see that the open source community has a place for people like me to survive. I don't want to have to develop Windows software to do what I love- and I don't want to do what I love for free! I have to pay my rent and so do the people at RedHat. If there is such a problem, then don't buy RedHat. If Caldera is struggling because of RedHat's support, then Caldera needs to get on the ball and get some support of it's own.

Just make sure that RedHat doesn't get like Microsoft (especially with licensing deals). Other than that- leave them alone!

When was the last time that you were zooming down the freeway and you wanted to run a spreadsheet? Or play Doom?

There is a time and place for PC's and driving is not one. What you need is a simple computer that only does exactly what you need- that's not necessarily a full pc.

  6. technology != make better on The Future of Pinball · · Score: 1

Just because you throw technology at everything doesn't mean you are improving it.

Not every thing needs to have computers in it to make it better- some things are just fine the way they are.

  7. Advertisers don't come running... on Ask Slashdot: How can Free Web Service Recoup Costs? · · Score: 2

I think the main thing that people are forgetting when they suggest advertisements is that people don't advertise on a page that has no hits- and without a page that has already been online you don't have the hits. Classic chicken and egg problem- you don't have a site without the money to start it and you don't have money without the site to generate the hits. I agree with the person who suggested a small business loan. Get the site started. Then get advertisers to get it up to profitable.

Then again there is the web cam.....

  8. That's it? on Red Hat 6.0 and Arm? · · Score: 1

So a single comment deep in the pages of RedHat say that ARM support is going to be included with RedHat 6? That's a huge stretch! What about a link to a site on RedHat's site saying that they plan to support it. It just seems like a huge assumption that because one person put a comment on a page that the entire organization is set to support it!

  9. If college was a waste of time... on Should Geeks Skip College? · · Score: 1

Then I don't think I would hire you.

I think that there is a whole lot to be said for my post graduation, work force experience, but college was definitely no waste of time. The learning that I did in and out of class on everything including and beyond technical subjects was so worth the time I spent there. The technical classes gave me a firm foundation in the field that I work in and without it I would have had nothing to build on. The other classes gave me something to be interested in besides computers. I would do my undergraduate studies again in a heart beat. I would do them even better than I did.
