  1. Re:My Experiences with XiG on DeXtop And Free Software · · Score: 2

I have my Matrox driver working now. The new Matrox drivers work very well. (I even have the agpgart code working in the 2.2.x kernels.)

My frustration with XiG needs to be clarified though.

They charge too much for a product that I can get elsewhere for free or near free. (All I really needed was dual monitor support anyways. The rest worked fine right out of the box.)

They are nasty and churlish in reguards to other members of the Open Source community who compete with them.

Both good reasons to have nothing to do with them.

  2. My Experiences with XiG on DeXtop And Free Software · · Score: 2

I looked into their products when I was looking for a driver for my Matrox G400 Max card a number of months ago. They had one, but their marketing spiel was so NEGATIVE that I refused to buy anything from them. (Not to mention that they wanted about $200 for a driver to run my card and it appeared like I would have to spend alot more to get everything I use running.)

Their web site touts their implementation of OpenGL, not by giving you reasons as to why to buy it, but by slamming the Mesa people over and over. (As well as blaming the Mesa people for XiG's bad choices in naming of their libraries for OpenGL.) Seriously nasty and distateful stuff.

Judging by the other things I have heard out of their marketing department, I don't want anything to do with them. (Especially if they break Gnome and KDE libraries to make CDE code work. How much of a default Redhat install with work after you do that? Not much I would guess.)

These sort of "quick fixes" get proposed all the time. You see much more of them during political prostitution season. The various leaders need to show that they are "doing something for the community". Of course, the electorate is shallow enough to not question if this will have any effect on youth violence.

If you can find it (and it has not been banned by the local authoritarians), check out back issues of a small press magazine called ""Murder Can Be Fun". They do research into the more morbid parts of history. One of the issues was on youth violence. What they published goes counter to everything we are told about the causes of todays violent youth. The reason few use IDEA is because of the uncertanty of the patent issues. It seems to be very secure, but since there is no clear indication of who to pay and how much, people tend to avoid it. (Especially for free products, where you are not making any money off of it anyways.)

The reason that you do not see many implementations of the AES cyphers is that they have not been around for very long. The industry has not had a whole lot of time to beat on them. 3DES, on the other hand, has had a number of people hammering on it for a decade or two and it known to be quite secure. FEAL has had people hammering on it for years and is known to be much weaker. (IDEA is secure, but has serious patent problems.)

The reason you see so many implementations of Blowfish is that it has been hammered on for a while. The few problems with it have been fixed. It is fast. Most of all, it is FREE. It does not have the nasty little patent problems that many of the other algorithms have. Twofish will have the same status after it withstands the blows of cryptographers for a few more years.

I also suspect that another reason for the lack of adoption of AES canidates is that people are waiting to see which one comes out on top. Never underesitmate the power of buzzword complience in the minds of management.

Back when I was a poor and struggling programmer, I purchaced my first Intel-based system with a tax return check. This was in the middle of a chip embargo so prices were sky high.

Well, I had enough to buy the main system (A 10mhz 8086), but not enough for the monitor.

My solution turned out to be more expensive than the original monitor.

I found a monochrome monitor without an external case at a local electronics store. (Whacky Willies in Portland,OR. They deal in used equiptment and just generally STRANGE stuff.) I tried a couple of solutions for cases (including foil covered cardboard and other tacky looking disasters), but nothing worked.

I then decided to use Legos.

Do you know how many buckets it takes to build a monitor case? I must have spent over $100 in lego over the next few months. And you have to glue them together because the heat causes the whole thing to expand and come apart at inappropreate spots.

I finished it off and used the monitor for a number of months until general fear of radiation burns drove me to buy a real monitor. (This thing was pretty nasty. It was an early green screen that you could practically feel the radiation off the front. Probably why it only cost me $5.)

I still have the monitor in a box in the computer room. It needs some repair after being moved a number of times, but it might even work. Someday I will have to post pictures...
