  1. I suggest a Guiness on Assorted Slashdot Changes · · Score: 1

Nothing helps me relieve "angry user" stress more than a good Guiness Stout. That's why I keep a four pack of pub droughts here in the office, for just such an emergency! ;-)

  2. What about Quality? on Assorted Katz Hype · · Score: 1

Is the quality of the writing/perspective irrelevant? I'm in agreement that a multitude of perspectives are important...there's a lot more to life than technology.

I think the main complaint that Wood makes, and the one that really resonated with me, is that Katz's recent pieces are shallow, poorly researched, and barely proof-read at all.

So I agree that non-technical perspectives should be welcome here, but I feel we need to establish some minimal journalistic standards and quality control for folks who are allowed to post "editorial" type pieces.

  3. Functional Illiteracy? What's up with that? on Assorted Katz Hype · · Score: 1

How can someone who obviously knows his way around a technical manual be functionally illiterate?

I wouldn't exactly describe technical manuals as quality writing. With a few notable exceptions, most are not.

  4. Absolutely on Assorted Katz Hype · · Score: 3

Lloyd Wood's article did more for my grey matter than the last dozen Katz articles -- well researched, logically organized, thoughtful, to the point

I tend to agree. I've been a Katz defender in the past, feeling that most flames were out of line. I still believe personal attacks are unneccessary, but I began to have misgivings about Katz's intentions when the book thing started. It became increasingly clear that Katz's initial arrival on /. was all a setup to promote his book when the time was right.

Wood's article has served to crystalize my thinking on this matter, and has convinced me to turn on the Katz filter on my prefs page.

  5. This is Ridiculous on Assorted Katz Hype · · Score: 1

Posting something like this on your site is throwing gasonline on the fire. These type of posts are antagonistic and fostering the controversy.

That is absolutely the intent. More controversy means more hits = more ad dollars for Slashdot.

That is the same reason they brought Katz on board. Certainly it's not for his technical or journalistic skills.

Declining sales of cd's has very little if nothing to do with mp3. It has to due with the fact that so many stores, especially those in malls, have jacked up the prices astronomically

Exactly. I know that I for one have made a conscious decision to reduce my CD buying due to the outrageous pricing.

$18 is just a crime, but$10-13 isn't that much better considering the actual cost of production. The record companies need to reduce the prices and reduce the amount of the cut they take.

Won't happen until sales really start slumping.

Really, how, exactly? I'm hoping you are not referring to the eMate.

The reason why the Newton failed was exactly because of price. Everybody wanted one, nobody could afford one.

  13. Did you read the actual article? on Apple and Palm Computing: Take 2? · · Score: 1

Sure, sell the most successful mobil computing maker to the same folks that managed to burn any advantage the Mac might have had over Gates

Excuse me, but where in the article did it say that Apple was going to buy Palm? It made reference to the fact that Apple considered it in the past, but I didn't see anything in that article that stated they still plan on buying Palm Computing.

In fact, the article cited doesn't even say that Apple is thinking about doing a Palm OS based device. That is just rumor and speculation.
