  1. IT shortage on The IT Labor Shortage · · Score: 5

Personally, i think the shortage is not of IT professionals, but of competent, well-trained ones. I have seen a number of programmers, developers and designers that don;t know anything but fake it real well, or the flip side which is those that know real well but are complete mercenaries and would screw over their employer or client in a heartbeat. I've dealt with both situations too often in the last year.

Telecommuting is one of those things that is heavily dependant on the company and the person. I telecommute where i work, I am basically the IT department. I find I ge t more work done at home, the simple reason being the distraction of other ppl constantly asking me questions is gone. When I am at the office, which is once every couple of weeks, i get bombarded with questions while i am there, when im at home the same questions are in an email, which makes things alot easier to control.

The big problem with telecommuting i've seen is staying focused, it's too easy to goof off if you don;t have anything obvious to do.

I expect certain things yes, no one is perfect, but the fact that documentation is often hard to get or nonexistent coupled with the fact that tech support is not free is a problem.

There are bugs in NT, serious security ones that MS has known about that they can;t or won't fix because they would require major rewrites, they also don't mention these. That is something that there is no excuse for.

Good points, but you're still comparing Linux of today to NT4, which is yesterday

Comparing current release OS's is the prudent thing to do, comparing a released software product with one in beta testing still is not. Complaining about this is imho a waste since running any betaware on a production server is foolishly taking extra risks.
I never really had any stability problems with NT4, This is one of those things i've seen with NT. It depens on the apps heavily. I've had NT server, identical hardware-wise, 99% the same config-wise, one craps out regularly, needing a reboot every 24 hours to be safe, one needs a reboot once a month.

I;m glad they are fixing things in Windows 2000, but fora server I'll stick with either Solaris (on a Sparc) or FreeBSD. No i'm not a big linux advocate. I just use what i believe is best for my needs.

As for TCO, at least with NT4, it's TCO is higher just from the number of extra apps you needs to get to make it do everything a unix server can out of the box. I mean NT4 doesn't even have built-in multi-user mode, terminal server not withstanding. NT is OK on the desktop but that is where it belongs, it cannot be everyhting to everyone, nothing can.

I'm going to take Unix (in all it's incarnations) into account here as well. I've said it before, I don't think Windows is ready for the server environment. No matter what you say, there is alevel of control that you cannot have with NT that you need. Also that GUI makes things more difficult IMHO since you can't always see exactly what is going on. MS says NT is easier to use, requires less training, i think it's the opposite. Well here are some point's i'd like to note from the post:

While Linux has excelent hardware support for older legacy hardware (386, 486, etc). It is notorius for not having support for the latest hardware until long after it is out. Granted this is haging, but your argument swings both ways.

Point taken, but why should i always need to spend large amounts of money for a new server if it doesn't require it? Spending thousands on a developmental server is a little much to me. Also the hardware issue is moot imho as i think you should always get the best hardware you can for the job.

NT4 isn't a games os. Officially NT5 isn't a games OS either, but it supports the latest DirectX7, and assuming that games aren't HARD-CODED to not install in an NT system, and you have valid drivers, you can play games on Win2000 with no problem. They seem to run faster and are SO much more stable than they are in Win98. Windows98 is a joke.

NT5 is dead, windows2000 is being marketing towards home users in one aspect i thought. Many home users play games, it had better support gaming or that's shooting yourself in the foot. Also you can use DX6 on NT just MS doesn;t officialy support it.

    5. Using the wrong Pagefile size >NT being so brain-dead that it won't let you set a pagefile of 0 bytes. Hey you with 256 Megs of Ram, don't you know you need a pagefile !
    ???

This is important. setting a pagefile of 0 is foolish imho though. You should have this set to twice your physical ram minimum imho, then again a nice thing about most Unices is that unless your doing something very memory heavy (like running netscape under X) you shouldn't even have to worry about your RAM if you have 128 megs.

I'm glad that Microsoft has made some changes that were long needed, I still think it has a way to go before it is a true server os on the level that the various unices are. I'm leery of GUI's because im the type that like a command line and I am an admitted control freak to a level.

Their act is fine. One thing sendmail has going for it is the guy who wrote the RFC for SMTP as developed sendmail. How many Unix admins are going to want to pay for sendmail when they can use a book and some time to figure it out? They know they can make more money going for NT, simple economics. Making blanket and/or inflammatory statements that something is dead or on it's way out because they ported it to NT or you don't like it is foolish.
